Hi Marion
Thanks for your reply and was pleased to hear there were other Francis and Samuel Malpas/Malpass born around that time.
Another lady has contacted me about the Staffordshire Samuel Malpas but we haven't been able to come up with a connection as that Samuel has a birth and corresponding death record.
I decided to bite the bullet and have a researcher in Shropshire check the Parish records for me to try to find my Francis and Samuel Malpas. They could well be connected somewhere to your George and Charlotte. Will let you know if anything comes to light.
Thankyou
Robyn
Hi there,
We have a Francis MALPASS born abt. 1826 in Bitterley, Shropshire to a Geo. & Charlotte MALPASS. Charlotte died in 1832 due to cholera epidemic in Kingswinford, Staffs.
There was also a Samuel MALPASS who was born in Kingswinford, probably the above Francis' brother - is it possible that this might your Francis' father?
If this is your man, you are probably related to Alan MORPHUS who has been working on this line for quite a few years. I think Alan can be contacted through this board.
If I find out anything else I will get back in touch with you.
Sincerely,
Marion

Francis Malpas b.Bitterley, Shropshire c.1826. Need help

Can anyone help me find the birth/baptism of Francis Malpas. According to the 1851 census, he was born at Bitterley Shropshire around 1826.
In his later 1850 marriage certificate his father is recorded as Samuel Malpas, a joiner. No mother recorded.
Have found no death record to date. But as Francis was a private in the 1st Royal Dragoons stationed at Nottingham Barracks in 1851, he may have gone with the company when they left for Crimean War in 1854.
Any help with Francis Malpas and his ancestors would be appreciated.
His daughter Frances Elizabeth Malpas and her new husband, Richard Knight emigrated to NSW, Australia in 1882, living in Sydney then Moruya on south coast of NSW.

Hi
Do you have a record for Francis Malpas born Bitterley c.1826 according to 1851 England census?
His father was Samuel Malpas, a joiner (from Francis's 1850 marriage cert in Nottingham). No mother's name is recorded.
I guess Samuel Malpas was born in the 1790s or thereabouts.
Would love to be able to take the line back further.
Thanks
Wondering if my Francis Malpas born Bitterley, Shropshire c.1826 connects to your family?
He is listed in the 1851 census as a private in 1st Royal Dragoons based at Nottingham Barracks. He was formerly a carrier or currier born in Bitterley about 1826. Cannot find him in any further census records and no death has been found.
On marriage certificate of 1850 when Francis married Dinah Martin at parish of Radford, Nottingham his father was listed as Samuel Malpas, a joiner.
In 1851 Francis Malpas was in the 1st Royal Dragoons & possibly served in Crimean War 1854/1855. He may not have survived. Presently having that researched.
Immigration records do show that Francis Malpas was dead by 1882 when his daughter Frances Elizabeth Malpas and her husband Richard Knight emigrated to NSW, Australia aboard the "Nottingham".
Hope someone can help with birth details of Francis and more information on his ancestors, especially of Samuel Malpas who was in Bitterley at least in the 1820s. I have hit a brick wall.
She did give me a lot of handwritten information - as photocopies so it was quite helpful. If you would like to email me directly at diannedickin@hotmail.com I can pass more info directly. I do have a sheet of info that takes it back to 1670 with a possible family coming from Wales in 1620. Exciting stuff! Dianne

I don't have a date, Sadly. I only have a page out of a book that says Commemorative Biographical Record, which states:
"Sidney Lovelace, born in Delaware County, in September 1872, resides at the homestead, and works at the carpenter's trade with his father. He married Miss Ada Malpass of Susquehanna, daughter of Daniel and Lucy Malpass, who came from England, her father being now a prominent resident of Susquehanna. Three children were born of this union, Lulu, Leon and Loretta. (there were 2 more that died as infants). Please let me know if you find anything, you can email me back at Crystallie@aol.com

I have Mary Ann Malpass and James Podmore in my tree they married in Burslem probably - it comes under the Wolstanton registration district - in 1875 (Jun 1875, Wolstanton vol. 6d p124). I have their daughter Sarah and several other siblings - no Arthur though! Mary Ann Malpass was born in 1855 in Burslem and was the daughter of John Malpass and Louisa Maria Hulme. One of Mary Ann Malpass's brothers was Walter William Malpass was my great grandfather. John Malpass was a Wheelright (as was William Walter Malpass).

Hi Terry,

Your Gt-grandfather Joseph Sandle was the eldest brother of Charles Sandle who was my Grandfather. In tracing my family I came across Joseph who married Priscilla Malpass 26/11/1872. I wasn't sure if he was related but managed to tie it up when i found birth certificate for Priscilla born 1878 at 24 Penn St. This is where Charles Sandle's parents lived for years.

I also found certs for Joseph born 1880, 22 Penn St: Henry George b 1890. 3 Walter St: Lilian Mary b1892: Florence Mabel b1894 14 Penn St. I believe Joseph's wife Priscilla died in 1896 and Joseph married again but have not really verified this. Joseph was born in London where his parents came from. They were Joseph and Lucy Barnett.

Any further info or queries will be welcome Joseph and Charles came fron a family of 10.

Malpass ancestor Dudley

I'm looking for both parents of William Malpass born Lower Gornal Staffordshire 1826. His father was John, a blacksmith. He lived with his aunt Hannah Malpass-Hickman (husband Zechariah) until his marriage in 1851 to Elizabeth Tomlinson. William's son Joseph came to Australia and became a publican in Charters Towers Qld. I know there are numerous Malpasses with similar first names living in the Dudley area in Staffordshire which complicates the search. Can anybody else researching this family help?

My James Malpass was born on April 18th 1708, he was noted as having served in the military in England and he was an officer. He wed Penelope Barry, daughter of James Barry, Earl of Barrymore and died Oct 13th 1775. The records do not say if he died in England or America. He also has a son named James Malpass of the American Revolution who stated he was born in Moores Creek and lived there all his life. James Malpas was the brother of Simon Malpas who on record is the first Malpas we see receiven land patent from the govoner. It does show Brunswick county as being where he recieved 100 acres from Peleg Rogers on Oct 18th 1765...

I have lots more if you would like, I can send to you!

Bitterley, Shropshire Malpasses

My group of Malpasses come from Bitterley, a small village near Ludlow in Shropshire, England. I've so far traced them all back to a John Malpas ( b. Nov. 1751) who married Susan Harris on the 27th. March 1773, in Bitterley.
Others along the way were; Edward or John Malpass, bap. 11 Mar. 1787. He married Eleanor Reynolds.
Edward ( b. 1824 ) marr. Mary Hotchkiss/Hodgkiss ( b. 1827 )
Edward (my great grandfather) ( b. 1852 ) marr. Mary Ann Webb ( b.1858.)
Anybody think they connect in any way?

Ive tried emailing Ann Sturgess (who sent you some info) but I guess shes changed her email since posting (well it is a few years ago!) I wondered if you could let me know what additional info she was able to help you with? Although Ive traced the capewells back quite far, I'm always interested in any info that will give added detail to my ancestors lives!

My nan was a capewell and her father was a Thomas Capewell (born 1870)
his father was James born 1837 and his father was another Thomas born
c1811 in Fradswell. His father was James Capewell born 1754, Buried 2
Jan 1831 Aged 76
St James, Fradswell, Staffordshire. There is a connection here with an
Armitage Park Farm. Does this ring any bells?

Many thanks.

Mike
