Maltman Jackson

I'm looking for information on the connection between Maltman and Jackson in East Anglia if anyone can help?

In my tree I have John Maltman(1839-1902)and Martha Palmer who had several children with what was thought to be the middle name Maltman and surname Jackson. There is no record of the couple getting married and in the census records that I've seen she was not listed as wife but John was listed as the children's father. Martha's first husband had the surname Jackson and she had one child with him.

I'm confused by the names as shouldn't it have been Jackson-Maltman or Palmer-Maltman? I'm even more confused as the family name simply went on to be Jackson once their children had their own families.

Hopefully that will make sense to someone if they have any more information.

Thanks.

Maltman 1855 Births, Scotland

Have looked up all the 1855 Scotland MALTMANs. Births, Marriages and Deaths. Have recently found that a David MALTMAN [born Glasgow 1865 to Joseph MALTMAN and Margaret HENDERSON] married Elizabeth McGUIRE [mother Margaret ALLAN from Donegal, Ireland], its actually the ALLAN line I'm researching. There were so few of this surname that I got all the 1855 Registrations because in Scotland, 1855 has the most information of any year. Will post them here, so they'll be in the Archives. Looks like there isn't a MALTMAN Mailing List, so this is the only place MALTMAN researchers can go with data to post. There are about 14 Births, 3 Marriages and 3 Deaths. Will post in 3 separate batches. MegG in Oklahoma USA

Hi Susan,
It's fascinating to hear how your branch of the family developed although sad about the two twins both dying young. Interesting as well that Alan was given his mother's surname as a middle name. I have seen it quite a lot but not as late is that.

I have often surmised that William must have come from East Anglia looking at the IGI but like you I have never managed to make that link. I have a transcript of the 1831 census which luckily survives for Grantham. If you would like to mail me at terrymaltman @ hotmail.com (remove the spaces) I can send you a copy. I also have my own transcripts of the Grantham parish registers for Williams childrens' baptisms. I would love to see your photos of Thomas H and Mary E ('Rous' I believe). You are right in thinking they dies in the workhouse. I don't have the record to hand (I am at work at the moment) but I think it was from the NBI. I'll look out the details.
Goo talking to you.
Cheers
Terry

Hi Terry
My grandma Doris had 3 children - Alan Maltman Taylor B1926, Pamela Irene Taylor & her identical twin Pauline Edna Taylor Born 1st March 1930 in Lincoln.
My mother was Pamela who married a Geoffrey Elias Sheriff in 1949. I am the eldest of 3 children of Geoffrey & Pamela with a sister Lynn Pamela & brother Paul Geoffrey.
My mother passed away at 45 years of age in 1975 and her twin Pauline passed away at 59 years of age in 1989. Alan Maltman Taylor is still alive and lives in Lincoln although he is somewhat of a recluse.
None of us (my brother, sister or I ) still live in Lincoln, Paul is in Hertfordshire, Lynn is in Surrey & we live in Norfolk.
I have many photos of Thomas Henry & Mary Elizabeth and their family but not any further back.
I would be interested to see any further information you have on William & Elizabeth as that is as far back as I can get, although there is a Maltman 'clan' in the Wisbech area and in Huntingdon/Cambridgeshire & with the relative closeness of these areas to Grantham I do wonder if there is a connection but I have yet to prove it.
I am at present struggling to find the deaths of my Great Grandparents Thomas Henry & Mary Elizabeth although I did find a mention of Workhouse Deaths ? I have not been able to confirm this.

Regards
Susan

Wow. I think that makes us 5th cousins once removed? I always struggle with that nomenclature. Henry is who I think of as 'Henry the hairdresser'. I descend from his older sister Sarah who had an illegitimate child by a William Sharp. Her son George William was living with Henry in 1841 but he and Sarah subsequently moved to Derby where my part of the family remained until I moved to Nottingham.

I have traced Henry and Thomas Henry to Lincoln where Doris married a Leslie Taylor and gave birth to Alan M Taylor in 1926. Would that be your father or uncle?

I have found census records for pretty well all of the Maltmans in Grantham but my choice find is the 1831 record for William Maltman. It doesn't give the data of the newer census' but it quotes him as a Coachman with 6 children whos ages and sexes tie up with the IGI and parish baptism records. I have his wife Elizabeth's death certificate which confirm that. Do you have any more on that generation?

I would be more than happy to compare notes if you have any gaps to fill.

Cheers
Terry

Stephen Maltman was my GGGrandfather. He was sent to Jackson State Prison, Jackson, Michigan for 15 years for fornication. According to his grandsons, he was a low life. He applied for a Civil War Pension after leaving prison and when he was an elderly man. His son, Calfin, died of the measles while serving in the Union Army. Whether he got the pension, I do not know. I have read the letters that he sent to the government stating that he was Calvin's father and also other letters of recommendation. Some are so generalized that they would cover anyone. Mary Ann died in April of 1866. The younger children were "farmed out" as foster children to several different families. Stephen was living in Jackson when he applied for pension. When or where he died I have no idea.

Hi Melinda, none of our Maltmans come from Scotland or USA as yet, they all originated in one village in Ireland. However if you go to the Genes Reunited site, you'll find cartloads of people looking for Maltmans from Scotland, England and elsewhere,
you're certain to find some connection there. It is the best site for putting people in touch. I've been tracking down Maltmans for 30 years-in the meantime a whole new generation has emerged, and they're all looking on Genes Reunited! Best of luck, Judith.

I have been trying to track down the Maltmans for quite some time, but it seems like when they came to the United States, they became somewhat elusive. I have a William Maltman, born between 1813 and 1815 in Pennsylvania and married Margaret Easby, born 1817. From what I can determine, Williams father was from Scotland and his mother from Pennsylvania. Margarets father John, was from England and his mother Ellen (surname possibly was Rigden) was from Pennsylvania too. I can't seem to "get a handle" on these people. It would be such a wonderful surprise to find that maybe you had these people in your database. Thanks, Melinda

I'm a descendant of Henry Maltman (1836-1929) and Agnes McFerran (1837-1916), both born in Killinchy, Co. Down and died in Bangor,Co Down. They had around 12 children, and are the ancestors of most Irish Maltmans. I've been gathering information on this family for 30 years, and have lots of information, family stories, certificates and ancient photos to share with anyone who has a connection. I live in Australia but was born in Ireland and know the Bangor area well. Hope to hear from some distant cousins out there.

Lincolnshire Maltmans

Encouraged to see at least one other recent posting (hi Valerie) I thought I might try throwing out a question.

I can't help with the Maltmans in Bristol as my line goes back to Lincolnshire. Specifically there is a cluster in Grantham. I am trying to find the birth record of my GG-grandfather George William Maltman. He was born to Sarah Maltman who seems to have omitted to get married. Her parents are William and Elizabeth (who died in 1847). William was a coachman and that is about all I can find so far.

Any info on Maltmans in early 19th century Lincs would help.

Terry Maltman

Hello Valerie,

I am a Stephen Maltman or at least my middle name is. However I am not the one you are looking for. Was he born in the UK or the US? I have been researching Maltmans in Derbyshire going back to Lincolnshire but I haven't come across a Stephen. What do you know about his parents? Names? Locations?

Terry Maltman
