One of my grandfather's uncles married a Sutcliffe...Henrietta.The Riggs family was right from England too. Marshall Riggs married her,and had two children,Marshall, and Norman. They are all burried up at Roxborough Presb. Church on Ridge Ave. They all lived in the Roxborough/Manayunk area...maybe she's a cousin.

Yes, I did find out who posted that tree. Unfortunately, the person was not very cooperative. Said that the tree was removed because of so many emails regarding the tree. The person was not related to most of the people on the tree, but entered various records regarding people from Manayunk.

Sorry.

Thank you for your inquiry. Yes, I did finally figure out who was the author. The person had other messages on other boards, so I emailed her. She removed the tree because she was inundated with questions. She was not related to many of the people on the tree, but included people that were in the census and other records for the area.

Yes, many of the german speaking people of Alsace (Elsass) claimed French heritage, especially during WW1 years. Baden was next to Elsass and most people there spoke a dialect called Allemani, which was part german part french. Certainly her husband had a german name. And St Mary in Manayunk was predominantly german, with some Irish too.
Martin was born in 1821 and died in Phillie in 1870. He lived on Frankfort Ave., so would not likely have been a member of St. Mary's parish. I doubt if he would have been related to Kate. The name was fairly common in Elsass and Baden and when I was researching Ruetschle immigrants from Eichsel (origin of my ancestor in PA) I found them all over the US and from various parts of German-speaking countries. Nevertheless I will keep my eye out for her name in my records from Baden.

Interesting. Kate or Katherine or Catherine (records show all variants) Rickley, indicates in census records that she was born in France, which could be Alsace and French or German at specific times. But they spoke French at home according to the answer on the census. She was born around 1833 as the records from the church give dod as 13 Feb 1918 and lists her as 84 years old. Pa death certificate gives dob 20 Oct 1838 in France and gives age at 80 yrs, 3 months and 24 days. She was married to Ignotz Brunner who is sometimes listed as Enos or Enoch or Notzig and he shows French spoken at home. My understanding is that St Mary of the Assumption was a "German" RC Church. I will check out Martin Ruetschle. Do you know when he immigrated?
Thanks, Dolores

I have a suspicion that this is a variant spelling of Richley, which originated in Baden as RUETSCHLE. Many families of this name emigrated from Baden to PA, including Philadelphia, in the period 1840-1870. One was named Martin Ruetschle.

Several relatives from Baden; Gottfried (Godfrey) KAEHNI b 1833 and 3 sisters-Katharine, Rosalia and Walburga, cousin Anselm KAEHNI b 1842 and cousin Richard KAEHNI b 1844 emigrated to the USA in 1847, 1872 and 1880, respectively and settled in Manayunk near St. Mary of the Assumption Church. THey had many descendants, most of whom spell the surname KAHNY now. Found a few buried in St. Mary Cemetery but have yet to find the rest. Seeking any information at all on descendants and family members and their fates.

I am researching several families who lived in the Manayunk area in the 19th century. Ignotz or Enos Brunner and his wife Kate Rickley or Rickli, both of France attended church at St Mary of the Assumption. Their daughter, Katharine or Catharine, married a Wm Bauer of Germany in 1887 and several of their children were baptized at that church. Enos was a shoemaker and lived on Levering Street. Later lived at 2213 Dexter Street. Maiden name of his wife, Kate, was found in church records. Her father is listed as Anton Rickley, but I suspect it was actually Rickli.

hello All,
yes there was Klan goings on in at least the 1830's and 40's. My mom grew up on Shawmount off of ridge towards the crick. She remembers my grandfather going out and yelling at them as they came up the street and saying there names based on thier voices. He was raised non- catholic, but was baptized as a catholic. Lucky for him they did not know it at the time.

I lived on E. Martin St. Roxb until I was 8, but I know much has changed since then. I just looked up Quincy on Mapquest and see that it is on the other side of the creek, is that correct? I know very little of that part of the city.
There seems to be very little documentation for the activity: no newspaper items, no photos, nothing but memories of the very oldest residents...
Thanks for your response, Amy.
Could be match. My notes are sketchy and I didn't pull everything out...but I have a Geo.Washington Taylor b around 1865. His one son was William. I guess he would have been born some where between 1885-1900+. I do know some of my family did move to NJ. Some went to Somers Point, NJ. Hope this helps.

I live in MD. I am hoping someone has access to a Manayunk directory from the 1890's. I am looking for the Constantine's.. John and Sara(h). They were probably born in the 1870's, married early 1890's, and had 3 daughters that I know of...
They both apparently died between 1896 and 1900. John and Sara were my Great Grandparents. Daughters were Ruby, Frances(Fanny), and Caroline (Carri). If someone has any info I would appreciate it so much
