Hello, For 2 years I have been searching for any information at all on a couple: James and Lavair CLARK .. who were living in Westport, MA, in the 1830's .. I thought they were one of those .. genealogically lost .couples.. Today I took a chance and put out another query, and a very kind person .. solved the mystery .. I was looking for the wrong names.

Lavair was not his wife's given name, it was her surname. James CLARK, in 1829, married .. Mrs. Rhoda (Manchester) LAVARE .. They married in Westport, MA, and they had a daughter there in 1837 .. .. By the 1851? Census, James was not around .. the only people in the household were Rhoda and her daughter, Mary Anna, 13.

I have also found out that Rhoda's 1st (?) marriage was to .. Epaphroditus LAVARE .. in 1816 in Westport, MA. Epaphroditus and Rhoda had 3 children: Arnold LAVARE, William LAVARE, and Lavinia LAVARE, all born in the 1820's.

Epaphroditus was "lost at sea" in 1825 ..

In the marriage record of James and Rhoda .. James CLARK was listed as being from .. Little Compton, RI ...

... I have looked at some of the LDS records .. and see that the Manchester name .. probably goes back to Newport County, RI, in the early 1600's .. and they spread out into southern MA, and including Martha's Vineyard ..

I was wondering if anyone knew whether this Rhoda Manchester, probably born in the 1790's .. came from a MA or a RI family ...

I am descended from .. Rhoda's daughter, Mary Anna CLARK, (b1837 MA) .. who married John DEXTER, (b1837 CT) .. from Killingly, CT .. ....

John and Mary (CLARK) DEXTER adopted a baby girl in 1892, when they were 55 years old .. and my "educated guess" is that they had adopted their granddaughter .. They re-named the baby girl .. Mary Anna CLARK DEXTER ..

(Another researcher provided the name of Rhoda's daughter from her marriage to E. LAVARE ... Lavinia LAVARE, probably born around 1826. .... .. So far the only children I've seen mentioned for Rhoda are: Arnold, William, Lavinia, and Mary Anna.)

..Mary Anna CLARK DEXTER would grow up to become my grandmother ..
