Pabodic is actually Pabodie. There is a book listing all of the Mayflower marriages and children. You should look for it in your genealogy section of your library. The author is Susan E. Roser. 1) "Mayflower Marriages: From the Files of George Ernest Bowman" & 2) "Mayflower Births and Deaths: From the Files of George Ernest Bowman". You might also take a look at "Mayflower families through five generations: descendants of the Pilgrims…" by Lucy Mary Kellogg. And also, "Mayflower ancestral index" by Milton E. Terry. You can get at least one on amazon.com but it is pricey, so check the library first.

Who is the other girl?

Have been researching the John Manchester (1790-1873) and Betsey Coggeshall Manchester (1793-1864) line from the Tiverton/Middletown/Little Compton RI area. The children I know of are: Andrew H. (1820-1908), Amanda F. (1823-1892), Frederick Augustus (1828-1905), John Avery (1830-1903), Albert Jason (1831-1903), and William (1836-1913). I know from census materials in 1830 that there was a second girl living in Tiverton with this family and have found a tree that states that her name was Caroline (1821-1907). I was just wondering if anyone can confirm that for me?

Re: Looking For The Manchester Family Genealogy Of Sarah Manchester

Jonathan,

I too am researching a Sarah Manchester, born in April 1831 to Joseph Manchester (b. 1799 in Rhode Island) and his wife Margaret (unknown maiden name). Joseph and Margaret married in ~1860, possibly in Boston or Aurora, Erie County, NY. There are quite a few Manchesters that were in this part of Erie Co, NY at the same time, including a possible brother, Leonard Manchester, also born in Rhode Island. Joseph died after 1860 but before 1870, possibly in the Civil War, but I have no confirming data as of yet.

Is it possible that my branch of Manchesters come from the family line that you're researching? Do you happen to know if any of the Manchesters you are researching migrated to Western New York? It is interesting that many of the names I'm looking at are the same as the older generation you are researching - might this be a clue that they are related and named children after family in Rhode Island?

Joseph and Margaret had 4 children (to the best of my knowledge) - Sarah Ann (also went by Sally Ann) was the eldest - she is my 4th Great-Grandmother. She had 3 younger sisters Lovina, Sophia, and Huldah.

Both Sarah Ann and her sister Lovina married into the Chilcott Family of Aurora, NY.

Any information would be appreciated.

Best regards,
Andrea
Hello. I'd like to offer an FYI that there was a MANCHESTER family in Westport, MA, for most of the 1700's and 1800's. There is a lady, Rhoda MANCHESTER, b1800 there, who I believe to be an ancestor. (long story) She is from a MANCHESTER / TOMPKINS couple. There is a researcher in CT who does have Rhoda as an ancestor and she has a lot of information on the family. However, I don't know if she participates on the Lists and Boards anymore.

IF you go to the archives of this Board and search for "Westport, MA," you will find many postings about the families in that town. The town borders on Rhode Island and is fairly close to CT.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

P.S. Rhoda had a first marriage to a LAVARE and had 2 sons and a daughter. The lady in CT is descended from one of the sons. Her 2nd marriage was to a CLARK/E and she had a daughter with him. I believe I am descended from Mary Anna CLARK, b1830's, who married John DEXTER from Killingly, CT. They spent many years on the DEXTER Farm but in the 1880's they moved to MA. In 1892, as an older couple, they adopted a little girl. I believe she was their granddaughter, but cannot prove it. The little girl grew up to become my grandmother.
Hi Bob. I just noticed that I forgot to mention that I think the lady in CT had her MANCHESTER's going back to Peleg, and back to Tiverton, RI.

A good part of her research has been posted on some of the Lists and Boards. I can't think of the names in Westport at the moment - I've been away from that part of my research for a while.

Betty

Hello. Since more than 6 years have passed since I posted this query, I'd like to say there is better information. But, a researcher in CT has the most information. I don't know if she has participated on this thread.

I can make one comment, the Rhoda MANCHESTER we are interested in was born in 1800 in Westport, MA. And, from memory, her parents were Gilbert MANCHESTER and Mary TOMPKINS.

Also, James CLARK "disappeared" during the 1840's. He is one of my "concrete-block walls." He "appeared" in RI ~1827. He might have gotten on a ship in New Bedford, MA, in 1844 which was heading out to the Indian Ocean.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

Wow, that is funny that he didn't have to look anything up! Thanks for calling them!

This is rather disappointing as I was really hoping the burial record would show his parents. I was never able to get the actual death certificate - I tried the Massachusetts Archives via snail mail a few years ago before I knew the actual date of death and I believe I tried the town clerk in Fall River back then too. I asked them to look between the years of 1850 and 1860 but that it was probably in the early part of that range (and now we know it was in 1852). Another cousin recently went in person to the MA Archives but couldn't find any death info. Maybe another try with the town clerk in Fall River since we now have the exact date of death?

I did get their marriage certificate from the town clerk in Fall River, but there was no mention of his parents.

I'm not sure whether he was born in MA or RI and so far have not found any birth information but that probably could be an area to look at again since I haven't searched lately and there seems to be a lot more info out there now online. I'll start checking into that again.

I was also hoping that the Fall River Police Department might have some information, but the same cousin went down there to talk to them, and I don't believe they had any other information.

I wonder if there are any wills out there that mention Gideon? I haven't found any so far, but am still looking. I did find a document that he and Martha are listed on, but it was Martha's family, so there really isn't any info on Gideon other than his occupation and that he was married to Martha.

He's a tough one! I've been looking on and off for something like 5 years. There's a lot of documentation on earlier generations of Manchesters but it seems to stop just a few years too early to include Gideon. I have the feeling that if we can just figure out his parents, we'll be able to get back a few more generation very easily...

Well, let me know if you have any other ideas and I'll do the same - it seems like there's got to be something out there!

The deceased read law at Auburn, New York, in the office of ex-Secretary of State Hon. William H. SEWARD. On his arrival in San Francisco he entered actively upon the practice of his profession. He leaves a widow and 1 son to mourn his loss. He was born at Cambridge Four Corner, Washington county, New York; was descended from Quaker parents, and throughout his life held a prominent position in this community.
There is some speculation that the Edward MANCHESTER (who married Anna WILLISTON) could have been the son of Job MANCHESTER and Hannah ARCHER, instead of son of Thomas and Mary MANCHESTER. Edward's first two sons (twins) were named Job and Archer, then Joseph and later sons named Thomas, and William. They also had a daughter Ruth.
Alden MANCHESTER, in his Manchester genealogy publication states that both Thomas and his brother Job had sons named Edward, born the same time period. He lists both as being born 1695-1696.

Job, b. abt. 1661, was the brother of Thomas who married Mary. It is something to think about, and does make sense that it would be his son Edward, not Thomas'.

By the way, I have a copy of Alden and Rita MANCHESTER's genealogy publication on the MANCHESTER family which they published many years ago. I would be happy to look up info on the MANCHESTER family for you.

Judy Shaw Hoffman

Hi,
You can find the earlier ancestors of your john Manchester born on Sept 9, 1790 in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register, vol CII, January 1948, page 10 in article titled "The Manchester family of Rhode Island" It shows his ancestors back via Joseph, Isaac, John, Thomas to Thomas the original Manchester in North America. I expect this information is available in other family trees also. The
register is a publication of the New England Historic Genealogical Society and is usually available in most good libraries. It is a lot to type out here. Contact me if can't find it
cheers
Keith Manchester

There is no grave marker. They only have a record of him being buried with Martha, one of his sons and his daughter-in-law. Also the sons 2 children. Now we really have to put our heads together to see where to go from here. Any ideas? I'm only about 10 min. from Fall River so, I can pretty much hop over there anytime.

You didn't give a time frame for when these people lived, but the 1850 census shows the following:

Source Citation: Year: 1850
Census Place: Fall River, Bristol, Massachusetts
Roll: M432_308; Page: 71

Name: Gideon Manchester
Age: 33
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1817
Birth Place: Massachusetts
Home in 1850: Fall River, Bristol, Massachusetts

Gideon Manchester, 33, Butcher, b.
Keith, I found what you are talking about but #47. Joseph Manchester (Isaac(4), John(3), Thomas(2), Thomas(1), of Middletown, RI married Hannah Cranston. They had 3 sons one is the John I am looking for but it goes no further. Do you have John's death, marriage date, wife, her vitals and children of them. I would love to fill this part of my tree.

I think his wife was Betsey C. Lake b.1792, Tiverton, RI and d. 17 Apr 1864, Tiverton, RI. I have no marriage date. I do have John's death as 2 Sep 1873 in Tiverton.

John Manchester of Tiverton, RI line

I am looking for any info on John Manchester of Tiverton, RI who married a Betsey (maybe Lake last name)
John b. 9 Sep 1790, Tiverton d. 2 Sep 1873. Betsey b. 1792 and died 17 Apr 1864, Tiverton. They had a son Albert Jason, b. 30 Dec 1829 d. 30 Jul 1903, Cottage City, Oak Bluffs, Marthas Vineyard, Massachusetts. Record recorded in Providence, RI. Albert married 1st Emma Sisson and 2nd Margaret J Smith, b. 14 Jan 1851 Catskill, Greene, NY and d. 1 Mar 1923, Providence, RI. Albert is my great great grandfather. I thought John had come from the Maine Manchesters but the birth years don't add up. There are many Manchesters in Little Compton, RI but he was from Tiverton and maybe born in Portsmouth, RI. Thanks
