Hi Andrea,

I don't have a Frank Joseph Manda in my family tree, although I do have lots of MANDA's. What caught my attention is that my ancestors are Josef b. 1841 and Anna (Kacirek) MANDA. Anna was b. 1848, two of your surnames.

Where do your KACIREK's and MANDA's fit into your research? My KACIREK's and MANDA's came from the same town, Neumetely, Bohemia, Austro-Hungary.

Liz (MANDA) Peterson

Hello Jane,

My cousin, Jacky, is married to Roger whos father was Frank Josef Melhuish Manda and mother was Rose Catherine Thompson. I did some research for him some time ago and discovered his family came from Austria. We then discovered he had a half sister and brother in London who he has since met and now has a very friendly relationship with them. I have been trying to trace further family for him. With the names you have given me there certainly seems to be a connection. Funnily enough, Roger's half sister is called Jane, you don't happen to be her do you?? If not, would you like me to ask Roger and Jacky to make contact with you?

Kind regards, Andrea

Dear Andrea
My daughter Rhiannon has just seen your message re the Manda family from Austria. My father was Frank Josef Manda born in 1913. His father was Franz Carl Manda and was married to Frances A Melhuish (my grandmother). Franz Manda was interned in Crystal Palace for the duration of WW1 and then sent back to Austria. My father Frank died in 1995. What is your connection to this family?
Regards
Jane Broad

I am a descendant of a Josef Manda who immigrated to Chicago, Illinois, so I am not related to this Manda family as far as I know. However, the last name of Kacirek caught my eye. I am also a descendant of Anna daughter of Frantisek (Frank) Kacirek. She married Josef Manda. They were from Neumetely, Bohemia. How does your Kacirek line fit in with your Manda line?

Hello Kurt,

I have done very little research on this family so far at the request of my cousin, so I don't think I can give you very much at this stage.

My cousin is married to Roger, he was born MANDA but his father deserted him and his mother when he was only about 18 months old. She subsequently married a man by the name of SMITH and Roger took on this name and still uses it today.

However, I found that his father was Frank Josef Melhuish MANDA and his father was Franz Charles MANDA, his father was Josef MANDA.

I found that the family at some stage came from the Austrian/Hungarian border area and that one of them, I think it was Franz Charles came to London and was so annoyed when he was interned during the war that he went back to Vienna where he opened a restaurant.

I have found Albert MANDA, born in Austria and aged 22 living in London with a family by the name of COX. John COX was a gardener.

After the 1881 census he disappeared and I suspect this is when he went to America.

Because all the MANDAs ended up in the London area I suspect they are connected in some way but I have yet to find that connection.

I am sorry this all seems a little dis jointed but I am trying to fit the puzzle together. You may also be interested to know that Rogers' father went on to have 2 more children which no one knew about and I found them recently and Roger has been in contact with them and they are to arrange a meeting.

Could you tell me if you think you fit into this tree as Roger would be delighted to know about you.

Look forward to hearing from you again and please feel free to e-mail me off-line if you wish.

Bye for now, Andrea

I am still sorting through the names and sequences, but I believe that Albert A. Manda's father may have been Walter A. Albert's wife was Gertrude E. (Gertie) in the 1920 and 1930 census of South Orange. Albert immigrated in 1882 and became a citizen in 1891. Walter A. was a diamond setter. His sons Robert F. and Albert A. were florists (horticulturalists).

I would love to receive any information you have have on the life and careers of Walter and Albert and ideally photos of both gentlemen.

Albert A. Manda was born in Bohemia (1863) and came to the United States to collect plants. He ended up being in charge of the Harvard Botanical Gardens. Eventually with James R. Pitcher he founded Pitcher and Manda or the United States Nurseries in East Orange, New Jersey. As Bohemia would have been part of the Austro-Hungarian empire at this time, this is perhaps the family you are looking for.

Kurt
My grandfather's name was Conrad (Konrad) Manda. He was born in Denver Colorado in 1902. His parents were Germans from Russia. I dont know when they immigrated to the U.S. I cant find them on the Ellis Island Website. I have never been able to find them in Colorado. I did find them in Idaho in 1910 but not again until they moved to Yakima Washington in the 1920's. I was just wondering if you have ever seen anything about these Mandas in your search. His father was also named Conrad and his mother was Elizabeth Holman, also a German from Russia. They spoke fluent German in their home. My grandfather had a sister and two or three brothers. Thank you for any information you might have.
