Hello: I am trying to find some info on a James Mangan who came to the US from Co. Clare. Once here, he married a Bridie O'Meara (O'Mara), also from Co. Clare. Lived in New York all their lives. I do not know his birthdate or parents.

Hi

My grandaunt, Mary Mangan is living in Glin, County Limerick. We have a couple of family trees and I would be glad to help if I can!

There is a very narrow crossing of water between Glin and Co. Clare, I know that some of the Mangans in Glin were boat builders and that they used to travel back and over regularly! Perhaps this lead to the clan moving across! I'll see what I can find out!

Contact me at roisinm7@gmail.com

Roisin Mangan.

Hi, wish I could help you, but I have'nt found a connection yet. Will keep looking... Some of the Mangans were very illusive, and most of them were named the same, so it makes it very difficult to track them. I know how frustrating it can be. If I find anything, you will be the first to know. Happy Hunting, Sharon Ferguson Wright.

He married Catherine Naylon (from County Clare) and had three sons, John (1895-1956) Thomas (1897-1943) and Walter (1898-1899). He then left his NY family and went to Australia. He married and had 6 children. I am trying to find out anything I can about him and his Australian family.
Yes, I've been e-conversing with Beth for about a week! You're right, John, Alice's husband, had already gone to New York in 1907. There is a Mary Mangan living with Alice's brother John O'Shaughnessy in Dublin, and I believe this is the missing daughter. The age and county of birth bear this out. You can imagine how happy I was to be able to show that 1911 record from Glin to my husband and tell him that Mary O'Shaughnessy was his great-great grandmother!

Diane O'S

As a further update, I have since found Alice O'Shaughnessy Mangan in the 1911 census, in Limerick. Her husband is not with her, nor is her daughter Mary, so I suspect he has already come to the US. In this census, Alice indicates she has given birth to 11 children, but only 8 of them are still living. The 7 with her are Patrick, Alice, James, Thomas, Catherine and Margaret. I believe that Patrick is probably Joseph Patrick, based on your records. Also in the home is Alice's mother, Mary O'Shaughnessy, aged 90. Mary indicates she was born in Kerry. All the others state they were born in Limerick. Email me if you think I can add anything more! I think you are also speaking with my friend Beth!

Cindy Wood
cwood91262@aol.com

Hi Sharon:

No definite date of birth for either Tim or James. Based on a number of records, marriage, census, death, Tim was born circa 1859-63. I did find a death cert for a James Mangan in Cloonoughter dated 1883, with an extrapolated year of birth of 1813. The informant was an Elizabeth Mangan, and oral history has it that Tim Mangan's parents were James Mangan and Elizabeth O'Gorman. I can't find a corresponding death cert for that Elizabeth Mangan who was the informant for James' death.

I'm about ready to go to Glin when I visit Ireland in November, and just advertise for Mangans!

One of my friends who grew up there says that the Mangans were boat builders and that's how they wound up in the area.

Cindy Wood

Mangan, Glin Catholic Parish, Co. Limerick

I am trying to put together Mangan lines from this Catholic parish in northwest Co. Limerick. If you descend from a Mangan in this area, I would be particularly pleased to hear from you. I am most interested in the ancestry of a Timothy Mangan, born circa 1859-63 who married Mary Mulvihill. We have the civil marriage cert for them in 1884, which shows they married in Glin Catholic parish, but can find no corresponding church record in the IFHF index. The civil marriage cert indicates Tim is the son of (deceased) James Mangan, while Mary is the daughter of Patrick Mangan. Both bride and groom lived in Cloonoughter at the time of their marriage. By 1901, they are living in Killacolla townland, where descendants still live today. There was a John Mangan in this townland at the time of the Primary Valuation, so did Tim wind up on his land, and if so, how is John related to Tim. The puzzle of Tim and Mary got me interested in the surname Mangan as a whole in Glin, and is why I am now trying to put together Mangan lines! It's an obsession.

Cindy Wood
cwood91262@aol.com

I am looking to connect with any Mangans from Glin, Co. Limerick related to my husband's O'Shaughnessy line. John Mangan married Catherine (O')Shaughnessy in Glin on 7 July 1862. Their son John J. Mangan (b. abt. 1869) married Alice O'Shaughnessy in Glin on 12 February 1889. John and Alice, along with at least 7 children came to New York between 1906 and 1914. John and Alice died within a few weeks of each other in the summer of 1938 in the Bronx. If any of this sounds familiar, I would love to hear from you!

Hi there,

My Great Grandfather James Mangan b1854 came from Keel, Achill, Mayo, ireland and I have recently discovered that he had two brothers that went to the US. James went to the Shetlands and then Edinburgh and Michael stayed in Mayo, where, I'm not sure yet.

http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.mis...

One brother, John Mangan born about 1825, settled in Boone, Franklin, Missouri as a farmer and was married in Sullivan, Missouri, all not far from Pacific. I am pretty certain there was more sibblings in the family, maybe Thomas was a brother of? I am trying to find out if there are other sibblings and also who their parents were - maybe a Patrick Thomas Mangan and, Delia Lavelle or Mary Mangan? I suspect that the father may have had two wives during his life?? The other brother Edward was a miner and was also a soldier in the civil war.

Could you please let me know if you have any further infomation on this family.

I am looking for information in relation to my great grand parents who I have very little information to go on. My grandfather would have been John Mangan born in Clondalkin Co.Dublin to Peter Mangan and Mary Ann Mangan nee Pender. I have found from the 1911 Census that Peter and Ann had four children of which three were living in 1911 and he was a blacksmith they were both born in Co Kildare. Peter was 46 in 1911 and Ann was 31 there I draw a blank so any help on taking this search further would be greatly appreciated. even information on how to access birth records or marriage records in Kildare. I can be contacted on agnes.fraser2@btopenworld.com Thanks Agnes

I am trying to establish if James Mangan born 1837 Cloonbony (Miltown Malbay)County Clare emmigrated to Chicago Illinois in the 1870s. A John Mangan born circa 1854 Miltown Malbay emmigrated to Chicago Illinois in the 1870s. He had cousins John and Catherine Mangan who had emmigrated to Victoria and settled near Geelong. There is no record of James remaining in County Clare and I have been unable to find him joining the rest of his family in Victoria.

Joanne

Martin J and Margarets daughter. Michael leos sister. All I have is birthdates from some census, and that about it. Would welcome any memories or facts. Sharon Ferguson Wright

Start with the NSW BDM site, really excellent for backtracking your family. As you gather information from the certificates you will eventually find what you need to know. If you find a link with this family, let me know so i can fill in the gaps for you etc.

David Mangan

Hello Lorraine,
Nice to meet a new clan member. I did the family history thing several years ago. Since then I have meant to update it, but too many other interests and committments etc, so the files are a bit unorganised at the moment. You will see on this board that another relative, Michelle Schaller, is also researching this arm of her family and is quite up to date. What i have is quite comprehensive, representing 3 years of research and a few trips to Sydney etc. FYI i am descended from Daniel Mangan and Catherine Quill (not Donovan) via their son James, brother of John. You can contact me via my private email address, dalmaks@hwy.com.au, to continue this discussion etc.

David Mangan

Hi, Joanne. I don't think we are looking for the same man.
I really don't have many clues to mine, except that he was
born in Clare, Ireland, came to the US and married a Bridge"bridie" O'meara in New York. I have no birth or death dates, but a burial date of 11/23/1963 in Gates of Heaven Cemetery, Westchester, New York. I believe my James was born in late 1890/ (pre=1905).

Sharon,

Jean Mangan Kerr is Regina Mangan, sister of Mary and Michael Leo. Kerr is her second marriage. Her first husband's name, I believe, was Reinhardt. There was a son of that marriage. She had two boys of the second marriage, James, (called Jay or Jerry) and George. They lived in Rivers Edge, NJ and ran a nursing home in Boonton, NJ. I believe that Jean was a nurse. Her parents are Martin Joseph and Margaret, nee Kearney. I'd be thrilled to have a copy of the photo you mentioned.

I've been away from my computer trying to settle my uncle Robert Mangan in assisted living. The endless tasks are finally being resolved so I will have more time to poke around in the family history.
I don't know. Where in upstate NY is your family located? My great grandfather Martin was the first of his family to be born in the US, (1864) His father was James married to Catherine, nee Delaney. I haven't been able to get any further information. What part of County Mayo did your folks come from? I do know that James and Catherine were married in Mayo and had two children who emigrated with them. Catherine's family (Delaney) either was already in Pennsylvania, or emigrated at the same time. Keep in touch.

Maureen

Hi,

Not sure if this helps but my tree has a Julia Mangin marrying my ancestor Michael Donohoe - they had two children - Christopher born and John born . I do not know where they were born but I do know that John was living in Navan in County Meath in 1838 working as a Butter Merchant.

The spelling of Mangin is slightly different to your Mangan - I got the name from John's death register entry in Scotland / Glasgow, where he died in 1863.

I am a descendent of John Mangan b. 1790, son Thomas b. 1820 in Keel, Achill, Co. Mayo, married Margaret Lewis b. 1832, d. 1860. Robert L. Mangan, son of Thomas and Margaret was my great grandfather. John and Thomas settled around Pacific, Franklin Co. MO. when they came to the US. Robert L. eventually came to Springfield, MO where my grandfather Bernard J. Mangan was born. I don't know if this is part of your connection or not.
