Warren Cyrus Mangum Wanted by FBI, Utah 1916, Help solve case of Missing Father***

Warren Cyrus Mangum, son of Mary Tranter & Cyrus Franklin Mangum.
Grandson of Thomas Tranter & Sara Collins

In October of 1916 my Great-Grandfather, Warren Cyrus Mangum, vanished from the Salt Lake City area where he lived with his wife Dixie Laura Pike Mangum & their 3 young daughters. I hope that by posting some details here I may come in contact with a relative of Warren Cyrus Mangum or perhaps come in contact with a relative of one of his siblings. Our family has never learned what happened to Warren Cyrus Mangum but we are sure that stories of his whereabouts circulated amongst his siblings and their family members over the years. My Grandmother became an orphan 2 years after her father vanished.....when the Spanish Influenza claimed her mother's life in November of 1918.
In a newpaper article written up in the October 5th, 1916 edition of the Salt Lake Tribune a report details the facts behind a complaint charging Warren C. Mangum with embezzement from the Continental National Bank in Salt Lake City, Utah. A person named W.W. Trimmer swore to the complaint & a description of Warren Cyrus Mangum was telegraphed over the entire US....with special pains taken to get the message to Port Officers to prevent Mangum from leaving the country. An officer named John S. Cortess was also involved in the case/search for my Great-Grandfather.

Warren Cyrus Mangum never contacted his wife or children after fleeing Salt Lake City. The last memory my Grandma has of her Father is him setting up a tent and other camping gear in their backyard on the weekend before his disappearence. Over the years we have heard tha Warren C. Mangum may have fled to South America...but no proof of this even exists. All records with his name vanish after October of 1916. There are no death certificates, census reports, or any other documents listing a Warren Cyrus Mangum after 1916. We do know that he stole enough money to buy a house in that era. Was he dodging a World War 1 draft? Did he die in the 1918 Flu epedemic? We have nothing to go on. It is my hope that someone reading this story may have learned a few details about what happened to Warren C. Mangum. It's probably safe to assume that he changed his name...perhaps relocated away from Utah...and started a new family. Would he have kept his original birthdate and his first name?

Warren Cyrus Mangum born November 20, 1886 (or 1888)
in Nephi, Juab Co.,Utah

Warren Cyrus Mangum vanished from his family & the State of Utah in October of 1916. He may have changed his given birth name. It occurred to me that he may have chosen to take on his Mother's maiden name because of its familiarity to him. Warren Tranter?

Warren Cyrus Mangum married Dixie Laura Pike of Salt Lake City, Utah. The Pike Family may also have some info as to what happened to Warren Mangum....but I doubt it.

Warren C. Mangum had several siblings:
Lucretia Mangum
Earl Mangum
Melvin Mangum
Lawrence Tranter Mangum
Raymond Mangum
Frank Mangum
Alice Mangum

I'd imagine that Warren Mangum may have contacted one of his siblings in the years after he vanished and it is my hope that any of the children or grandchildren of the above listed people may have heard stories as to the whereabouts of Warren Cyrus Mangum. Please contact me with any info. My Grandma is 100 years old and has never learned the fate of her father. Your Washington Mangum was the son of Reavis Mangum and Martha Wilkerson, both of Granville County, NC. Reavis (also spelled Reaves)died in 1844 in then Orange County and Martha lived into the 1870's. The Family Bible along with a picture of Martha Wilkerson Mangum are located at the Eno River State Park in Durham, NC in the Hugh Mangum Photography Museum. The Mangum-McGowan house is where Presley Jackson Mangum, brother of your Washington, moved to in the early 1900's to escape the growing city of Durham. I have been researching this family for some time now, and have much information. I would be happy to share the rest of the family with you. I descend from part of the family that remained in Granville County. Can't wait to talk to you!

I descend from Polly Ashley born c1800 married John E. Carrington in 1818 Orange NC. Her brother per findings was Squire Stagg Ashley born June 1806, and the YDNA of his descendants match the Duke males in Orange NC, some of which intermarried with Carrington relatives.

Have you figured out the parents of Green B. Mangum?

A Green "Duke" Mangum born 1793-1852 Orange NC (wife Nancy) was a son of William Duke and Dicey Carrington (she married Arthur Mangum Jr, hence the surname Mangum). William Duke acknowledged that he was the father in his will.

I don't know if the Mangums I have are related to yours but I have a John H Mangum born abt 1808 in Anne Arundel County married an Elizabeth Atwell Feb 19, 1838. They had 3 children that I know of: William H b abt 1835, Susana b abt 1844 and Pricilla b 1849 all in AAC. Pricilla married a Henry Bush and had 4 children that I know of. I can follow their daughter Elizabeth who married Walter Mccain of Baltimore and they had 6 children. If any of this connects with your side let me know please.

Mary McGregor had a brother Michael McGregor. they had a cousin Madge who married John and they lived in Edinburgh. Mary McGregor was brought up and born in Burtisland, Scotland.

One of our lines from Greenbery Mangum/Mangrum out of Tennessee is genetically identical (DNA test)to at least one line of Dukes out of North Carolina. However, no relationship has been found through traditional genealogy. On the other hand, the very public tradition that Ellison G. Mangum was the son of one of the Orange County, NC Dukes is now in question because one of Ellison's descendants has neither the Mangum nor the Duke markers in his 'Y' chromosome.

I've just recently had his adoption records opened and found out his father was a Roy Mangum born in Matagorda, Texas about 1906-07. 1) Mangum/Mangrum
My GGrandfather is James George 'Jim' Mangum - oldest son of Greenbery (Green B) Mangum of Tennessee. We have not been able to go farther back than Greenberry and feel he may have ties to NC. We have collected some of the NC Mangum information in the hopes of finding Greenberry's parents and other family ties.

2) Lowery
My Grandmother Mangum first married a Haynes and one of my Aunt Lillie Hayne's daughters married a Lowery living in Texas.

3) Lowery Kindness to our Mangum's

Looking for the husband of Elizabeth Allen, last name was Mangum. She was born May 1832, Granville Co. They had a daughter named Mary Mangum born ca 1862. Mary had some children with her surname leading me to believe they could be illegitimate. The names of her children were:
Nellie born June 1890.
Wilson born 1 Sept 1883.
Elizabeth "Lizzie" born ca 1894.
Presley or Preistley T. born ca 1896.

In 1900 census, Elizabeth was living with her brother Elias G. Allen as a servant.
1910 census Elizabeth and Elias G. must have died and Mary Mangum is the head of household. Also true for the 1920 and 1930 census.
I would like to know who the Mangum man was that Elizabeth married.
Does anyone have any info on this family group? I am a descendant of Elizabeth and Elias G. Allen's brother, Elijah Allen.

Luther Elvin Mangum was also my g-grandfather. I am also trying to find information on Pat Hobgood and where LE Mangum spent the time between Pat's death and when he married Lula Amanda Gibson.

My line is through LE Mangum's son Wayne Parrish Mangum and his daughter Sharon Elizabeth Mangum Harper.

I am trying to establish who Martha's father is. This is the Martha Mangum who married John Bolen or Bolling. Several family trees list her parents as Arthur Mangum and Lucy Person. Several others list her parents as Joseph Mangum and an unknown mother.She was born about 1770 in NC. She was the mother of William Reeves Bolen and Willis Bolen and perhaps others. Any help would be appreciated. I would also like info on how to acquire the Mangum family book.

I may be in the wrong thread but thought I would ask this question. My ggggrandmother was Martha Mangum, who married John Bolen aroudn 1815? Is she Mary's sister? If so where did the Choctaw connection come from? This is the first I have heard of it. I pulled a family tree from Ancestry.com and it lists her parents as Arthur and Lucy Person. Is this the same family Mary came from.

Mangrum Cemetery is located next to the Mangrum Church of Christ about 1/2 mile east of Highway 135 on the eastern side of Craighead County. Craighead County is in the NE part of the state. You can see the cemetery listing at www.GSCCA.com.

I am the administrator of the Mangum Surname Group at Family Tree DNA. We have about 50 members so far. We would be very happy to have DNA from one of the Texas clan of Mangums. Your father's DNA should tell us if he indeed descended from a Mangum lineage, and in some cases, it could give us an indication of which branch of Mangums. EL PASO, TX—Alice Mangum Longmire, 84, a resident of 5200 White Oak Dr. and a former resident of Henderson, died Saturday, April 1, 2005, at her home. A native of Wake County, she was the daughter of the late Leroy Mangum, Sr. and Annie Bell Chalk Mangum, and was the widow of William Nelson Longmire.

She was a member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Henderson where funeral services will be held Saturday, April 9, 2005 at 3 p.m. by Rev. Chris Moody. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

She is survived by three sons, Dan Wheeler of El Pasco, TX; Walter G. Wheeler of Youngsville, NC, and Ricky A Turlington of North Carolina; two stepdaughters, Lois L. Cash and Allison L. Prewer, both of Henderson, NC; two sisters, Rebecca M. Baker of Youngsville, NC and Doris M. Perry of Raleigh, NC; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Steven Wheeler and Mark Hampton Turlington; three sisters, Kathleen Willis, Delores Bobbitt, and Lois Stevenson; one brother, Leroy Mangum, Jr.; and one stepdaughter, Joyce L. Matthews.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the home of Lucy Longmire, 2941 Glebe Road, Henderson, NC.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Ted Stevenson, David Stevenson, Donald Baker, Ted Longmire, Steven Barbour, and Stuart Currin.

Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home of Henderson.

Dear Cliff: My ggrandmother was Emma Mae Mangum (1883-1950). She grew up in Milam County, Texas (& had a brother named Cliff!). Her parents were William Thomas Mangum (1848 KY - 1901 TX) and Mary E. Winstead (1848 KY- 1911 TX). Williams parents were John Mangum (1811 NC- 1872 KY) & Mary Tippett (1811 NC - 1861 KY). Do you have any info on them?? Thanks, Carol

I have a picture of my grandparents James(Jones)Fuller and Mary Ann (Mollie)Sykes Lowery with 3 of their 8 children, Louie Vann Lowery,Bessie Lowery and either Edward Lowery or Carl Lowery.Also in the picture is a man name Julian Mangum, who was a friend of the family. I do not know what year it was taken but my gf was born 1860 and gm 1866 and they look to be in their late 40's or early 50's.I do not know anything about this man but would share picture if I can find his family. I know this is a long shot but it might help me know more about my grandparents. Mangum Family, Orange and/or Durham County, Durham, NC

My GGMother is Nannie Mangum who married Charles Wesley Watson. Her Dad is Washington Mangum B: 6/1837 D: 1/1908 Wife Annie Fletcher B;1/1835 D: 12/1917. I have W, Mangum's dad as Wash Mangum died b4 1850 wife: Martha B: 1805 D: after 1870. Their children are William J, Angeline, Easley, Presley Jackson, Washington (My gggfather), and Walter (may have more). I am looking for anything on Washington (If correct name, birth date, place etc.) and Martha (maiden name, birth place, etc) I have found most of the family graves except for these two people. Any info is greatly appreciated. PS
