Warren Cyrus Mangum Wanted by FBI, Utah 1916, Help solve case of Missing Father***

**Missing relative**
Warren Cyrus Mangum, son of Mary Tranter & Cyrus Franklin Mangum.
Grandson of Thomas Tranter & Sara Collins

In October of 1916 my Great-Grandfather, Warren Cyrus Mangum, vanished from the Salt Lake City area where he lived with his wife Dixie Laura Pike Mangum & their 3 young daughters. I hope that by posting some details here I may come in contact with a relative of Warren Cyrus Mangum or perhaps come in contact with a relative of one of his siblings. Our family has never learned what happened to Warren Cyrus Mangum but we are sure that stories of his whereabouts circulated amongst his siblings and their family members over the years. My Grandmother became an orphan 2 years after her father vanished.....when the Spanish Influenza claimed her mother's life in November of 1918.
In a newpaper article written up in the October 5th, 1916 edition of the Salt Lake Tribune a report details the facts behind a complaint charging Warren C. Mangum with embezzement from the Continental National Bank in Salt Lake City, Utah. A person named W.W. Trimmer swore to the complaint & a description of Warren Cyrus Mangum was telegraphed over the entire US....with special pains taken to get the message to Port Officers to prevent Mangum from leaving the country. An officer named John S. Cortess was also involved in the case/search for my Great-Grandfather.

Warren Cyrus Mangum never contacted his wife or children after fleeing Salt Lake City. The last memory my Grandma has of her Father is him setting up a tent and other camping gear in their backyard on the weekend before his disappearence. Over the years we have heard tha Warren C. Mangum may have fled to South America...but no proof of this even exists. All records with his name vanish after October of 1916. There are no death certificates, census reports, or any other documents listing a Warren Cyrus Mangum after 1916. We do know that he stole enough money to buy a house in that era. Was he dodging a World War 1 draft? Did he die in the 1918 Flu epedemic? We have nothing to go on. It is my hope that someone reading this story may have learned a few details about what happened to Warren C. Mangum. It's probably safe to assume that he changed his name...perhaps relocated away from Utah...and started a new family. Would he have kept his original birthdate and his first name?
Here are some details:

Warren Cyrus Mangum born November 20, 1886 (or 1888)
in Nephi, Juab Co.,Utah

Warren Cyrus Mangum vanished from his family & the State of Utah in October of 1916. He may have changed his given birth name. It occurred to me that he may have chosen to take on his Mother's maiden name because of its familiarity to him. Warren Tranter?

Warren Cyrus Mangum married Dixie Laura Pike of Salt Lake City, Utah. The Pike Family may also have some info as to what happened to Warren Mangum....but I doubt it.

Warren C. Mangum had several siblings:
Lucretia Mangum
Earl Mangum
Melvin Mangum
Lawrence Tranter Mangum
Raymond Mangum
Frank Mangum
Alice Mangum

I'd imagine that Warren Mangum may have contacted one of his siblings in the years after he vanished and it is my hope that any of the children or grandchildren of the above listed people may have heard stories as to the whereabouts of Warren Cyrus Mangum. Please contact me with any info. My Grandma is 100 years old and has never learned the fate of her father. Below I have included a URL link to a photo I have of my Great Grandfather Warren Cyrus Mangum:

http://www.geni.com/photo/view/349117529990011504?album_type...

Contact me:
jamesbierman@yahoo.com
bangkokjb@yahoo.com

Sincerely,
James R.

Your Washington Mangum was the son of Reavis Mangum and Martha Wilkerson, both of Granville County, NC. Reavis (also spelled Reaves)died in 1844 in then Orange County and Martha lived into the 1870's. The Family Bible along with a picture of Martha Wilkerson Mangum are located at the Eno River State Park in Durham, NC in the Hugh Mangum Photography Museum. The Mangum-McGowan house is where Presley Jackson Mangum, brother of your Washington, moved to in the early 1900's to escape the growing city of Durham. I have been researching this family for some time now, and have much information. I would be happy to share the rest of the family with you. I descend from part of the family that remained in Granville County. Can't wait to talk to you!

Hi Andaleen,

I descend from Polly Ashley born c1800 married John E. Carrington in 1818 Orange NC. Her brother per findings was Squire Stagg Ashley born June 1806, and the YDNA of his descendants match the Duke males in Orange NC, some of which intermarried with Carrington relatives.

Have you figured out the parents of Green B. Mangum?

A Green "Duke" Mangum born 1793-1852 Orange NC (wife Nancy) was a son of William Duke and Dicey Carrington (she married Arthur Mangum Jr, hence the surname Mangum). William Duke acknowledged that he was the father in his will.

Gary

One of our lines from Greenbery Mangum/Mangrum out of Tennessee is genetically identical (DNA test)to at least one line of Dukes out of North Carolina. However, no relationship has been found through traditional genealogy. On the other hand, the very public tradition that Ellison G. Mangum was the son of one of the Orange County, NC Dukes is now in question because one of Ellison's descendants has neither the Mangum nor the Duke markers in his 'Y' chromosome.

Hi Paulette, I'll break this down into three parts.

1) Mangum/Mangrum
My GGrandfather is James George 'Jim' Mangum - oldest son of Greenbery (Green B) Mangum of Tennessee. We have not been able to go farther back than Greenberry and feel he may have ties to NC. We have collected some of the NC Mangum information in the hopes of finding Greenberry's parents and other family ties.

2) Lowery
My Grandmother Mangum first married a Haynes and one of my Aunt Lillie Hayne's daughters married a Lowery living in Texas.

3) Lowery Kindness to our Mangum's
Note: The following statement re Lois Lowery comes from Andaleen Mangum Whitney's website at
http://www.mangumwhitney.com/index.html
Please look at Andaleen's Paternal family and also at the research notes.

The following is a quote by Andaleen:
Lois Lowery, or someone on her behalf submitted an article to the "Mangum Family Journal", Bulletin 32-10, in Apr 1988. NOTE: Sources for this information are unknown, and thus far, except for names of children compared to census records and personnal family knowledge of Joe Mangum and his children, I have been unable to find any other source for information on grandchildren +. This document identified the 'Family of Green B Mangum & Elizabeth Crick'. Per the various census records from 1850-1870, this source identifies all the sons except William who we think
died between 1850-1860 and Elizabeth. However Betty has been added.
Don't know if Betty and Elizabeth are the same person or not.

Extract from source as follows:
1. Sue Mangum-married-no data on her. Believed to have died without issue.
2. James Mangum-married. had
a. Mollie Ann or Melia Ann. Married. No data on her.
b. James Mangum Jr. married. No data on him
c. Mary Ann Mangum. Married no data on her.
d. Salie Cora Mangum. No further data on her. It is possible that this may be the S. C. Mangum who married Jim Gillmore in Coffee County, Tenn. ca. 1870.
e. Dora Mangum
3. Thomas Mangum. Married Mary Elizabeth Lamb or Mary Elizab Lambert. Had 4 children.
a. Mollie Mangum. Married to William Henry Crick.
b. John Mangum
c. George Mangum
d. Joe Mangum. married (?)
(1) Delbert. Died young.
(2) Lucille Mangum. Married Fletcher.
(3) Carrie Mae Mangum. Married Martin
(4) Rayomnd Mangum. Married Catherine Womack. Moved to Ark.
4. Minus Mangum. (This name may not be correct. Never heard it in connection with family prior to this, or after this. Had 3 children. )
a. Monroe Mangum.
b. John Mangum
c. Vannie or Vanoy Mangum. (This would work in with the theory that the Vannoy or Vanoy family were connected to the Mangum-McMichael-Crick family.)
5. Martha Mangum. Married William Freeman. Had 2 children.
a. Mable who married Fred Quelch (no issue.)
b. Lillie (died in infancy.)
6. Joe Mangum. Moved to Texas.
a. George Mangum
b. Roland (or Rollie) Mangum.
7. Betty Mangum. Married William T. "Bud" Rlyant. Feb. 18, 1871. had 12 children.
8. Amanda Mangum. Married (1) James Henry Foulton. (2) James Polk Crick
Her Daughter?, by second marriage, George Crick,
had daughter Virginia Crick who married Henry Mangum.
Her daughter Liza Crick, had married John Henry Mangum.
Their issue were Henry, Clifton, Mamie and Lou.(M-F?)
9. Pauline Evergreen Mangum. Married to Joseph Jackson Uselton.

Paulette, do you have any information on the people in this listing or on this Lois Lowery? I mention her kindness to our Mangums above as we have been able to track our family through her list. I feel she must have had some ties with our Mangums to have all this good information!

Thanks for any information you might be willing to share.

LaVerne Holley Bradley

Mangum/Allen connection, Granville Co., NC

Looking for the husband of Elizabeth Allen, last name was Mangum. She was born May 1832, Granville Co. They had a daughter named Mary Mangum born ca 1862. Mary had some children with her surname leading me to believe they could be illegitimate. The names of her children were:
Nellie born June 1890.
Wilson born 1 Sept 1883.
Elizabeth "Lizzie" born ca 1894.
Presley or Preistley T. born ca 1896.

In 1900 census, Elizabeth was living with her brother Elias G. Allen as a servant.
1910 census Elizabeth and Elias G. must have died and Mary Mangum is the head of household. Also true for the 1920 and 1930 census.
I would like to know who the Mangum man was that Elizabeth married.
Does anyone have any info on this family group? I am a descendant of Elizabeth and Elias G. Allen's brother, Elijah Allen.
I am trying to establish who Martha's father is. This is the Martha Mangum who married John Bolen or Bolling. Several family trees list her parents as Arthur Mangum and Lucy Person. Several others list her parents as Joseph Mangum and an unknown mother. She was born about 1770 in NC. She was the mother of William Reeves Bolen and Willis Bolen and perhaps others. Any help would be appreciated.
I may be in the wrong thread but thought I would ask this question. My ggggrandmother was Martha Mangum, who married John Bolen aroudn 1815? Is she Mary's sister? If so where did the Choctaw connection come from? This is the first I have heard of it. I pulled a family tree from Ancestry.com and it lists her parents as Arthur and Lucy Person. Is this the same family Mary came from.

I am the administrator of the Mangum Surname Group at Family Tree DNA. We have about 50 members so far. We would be very happy to have DNA from one of the Texas clan of Mangums. Your father's DNA should tell us if he indeed descended from a Mangum lineage, and in some cases, it could give us an indication of which branch of Mangums. If you will write me by e-mail I will give you the details of the testing process, lab testing fees, and what we have found out so far with our DNA testing.

Those can be had by downloading my latest Journal Issue 59. It is free to download, but I will need to send you the download page address by e-mail.

I have some Journal subscribers and contacts who descend from Wiley & Mary. Again, e-mail me and I will put you contact with them. I would love to have another DNA participant for this very difficult lineage.

Sol Mangum family of Granville Cty NC on new website

I have just posted a lot of info to my new website featuring the William Maynor family of Chatham & Moore Counties, NC beginning in 1850...with possible connections to Sampson, Robeson or Duplin Counties. Over 18 different spellings of Maynor have been found in our research.

Also included are kindred families of Ausley, Davis, Phillips, Fields, Short, Martindale and more! I am also including a lot of information on other related families of Adcock, MANGUM (Sol/Solomon), and Lunsford of Granville County, NC and Virginia.

www.maynorfamily.com

My hope is that I will connect with folks who are also researching these families and, finally, I will be able to jump over some of my major research brick walls!
