Manion/Mannion/Marrion of Kentucky and Ireland circa mid 1800s

Greetings,
I'm hoping someone can help with our tree... I'm researching my husband's tree, and we have either a Mary Mannion, Manion or Marrion (only have her death certificate at the moment, and it's unclear) b. 1859 in Kentucky to a John Marrion/Mannion and Ann McHugh (both from Ireland and both died near Lexington, KY we believe). Mary died in St. Louis in 1936 (married to James Mulcahy).
Let me know if you can help. Thanks. Laura Thomson

Re: Lawrenceville/Hazelwood, Pittsburgh Manions

Hi! As far as I've been able to tell with my research, there were only a small handful of Manion families living in Pittsburgh around 1910 and before. The one I descend from immigrated from Ireland in the 1850s. They've been tough to trace because, like you, I didn't have any older relatives who could tell me, and any memory of them was lost with my great-grandfather, who did not have any contact with my grandfather after the 1920s.

My research has been temporarily suspended because of a new job I'm about to take, but what I would suggest you do is find out when your grandparents died, and send away to the PA Department of Health for the death certificates. They usually list who the parents were on the death certificates, and from there, we can begin narrowing down suspect birthdates, locations, and see if we have common ancestors. I don't have a lot on the Manions because my focus has been tracing my great-great grandmother, Sarah Manion, and gathering the details of her life. I can tell you, however, she had a lot of brothers and sisters, and they each had a lot of children. Her brothers passing on the Manion name were James, Martin, and Patrick. If you get the death certificates back and think there's a potential match, I would love to hear about it.

Good luck! I would also recommend you look up the Carnegie Library in Pittsburgh because they have a TON of genealogy records and have helped me out tremendously pre-1905.

Samantha

I would love to meet some relatives because my father was an only child and both his parents are dead. I have never met any of his family. He was born in Pittsburgh. His parents are George Manion and Dorothy Kirk. My father is George Frank Manion born July 4, 1949. I do not have his parents dates of birth, only that they were born before 1910.

Hi Glenn,
my name is lynette Manion, married to John Manion, whose father was William Francis Manion...son of Thomas Manion.
Thomas was reportedly born in Athlone,Ireland abt.1855, and was a miner in beaconsfield, Tasmania. His son William was also born in beaconsfield [1905]. Thomas was one of 12 children...two of whom were named Michael, and Arthur.
Could this possibly be the same Thomas Manion. I have only just started tracing the Manion side, and would love somewhere to start other than the facts I have? William married Vera McGrath in Australia abt. 1933.
He had a sister Eileen who lived in Beaconsfield also..and had something to do with the Beaconsfield bakery, but I am not too sure on that. If you think there may be some connection, or have some facts you could share, I would be most appreciative.
Looking forward to some news!!
My email address is..dingalyng@bigpond.com

Melissa,
Your aunt sent a message that your were researching your Manion family.

She didn't mention where your Manion's were originally from in Ireland or where they lived in the United States but here's another Manion researcher (grin).

My ggg Grandfather was Michael Manion b. circa 1829 probably in the western part of Ireland. He married Mary Ann Ferguson b. April 1837 in a part of Virginia that is now Taylor county, West Virginia. He was first found in 1860 in Allegheny County, Maryland.

At that time he was living with his wife, 3 daughters and his in-laws. By 1870 the families had moved to Hannibal, Marion County, Missouri. They were also living there in the 1880 Census.
Michael died August 7, 1884 and most of the remaining family either stayed in Hannibal or moved to Quincy, Adams County, Illinois.

If any of these locations ring a bell please contact me.
Gretchen
Email: Dddarwin@aol.com

Death of Capt. George D. Manion

Appears in the Terrell Times-Star, Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas, 8 January 1892 ...

Death of Capt. Manion

The death of Capt. George D. Manion, occurred at his home in Kaufman last Saturday morning, He was buried Monday evening and his remains were followed to the last resting place by one of the largest concourses of people ever seen in Kaufman.

Capt. Manion was one of Kaufman County's best lawyers and most prominent citizens. He was well known to nearly everybody in the county. The editor of the Times-Star knew him and esteemed him highly for his worth and ability. Capt. Manion had served in the Texas legislature and could have been elected to higher positions of honor and trust if he had desired office. While he often took active part in politics in the interest of friends or in favor of public questions, he never sought office himself. He was a Mason and occupied a prominent place in the Baptist church of which he was a member. His loss to Kaufman as a citizen leaves a vacant place that cannot be filled. He was ever foremost in her battles and never ceased to work for her interests. Such a man is worth an untold sum to a town and community, As a lawyer he was able and successful. Disease fastened itself upon his vitality and when after a lingering illness, life was extinct many a heart and home in the town of Kaufman and throughout the county felt sad. The sun of George D. Manion was a bright one and it has a peaceful tranquil setting.

Hi, thanks for the reply. My name is Glenn Manion. Yes the Patrick Manion that I'm researching would have been the Beaconsfield Baker, Patrick Joseph Manion's father. PJ was born in 1859 in Dublin and went with his family in 1860 to NZ where Patrick senior served in the Maori Wars until 1867. The family then came to Australia where they were stationed in Perth and Hobart (maybe Sydney as well). Patrick senior then took his discharge in 1870 and remained in Tasmania. My great grandfather George Michael Manion, born in Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland was PJ's older brother. Thomas Manion, miner of Beaconsfield was born in Athlone, Ireland in 1855. I believe that there was also a sister, Matilda in Melbourne. Patrick senior's muster record in 1869 shows that he and his wife Elizabeth Sara had six children. I don't know anything (yet) about these other siblings. Patrick senior was in the 2nd Batallion of the 14th regiment of foot. I'm keen to exchange notes or memories that may help give a better picture of these brothers. Its great to contact a new cousin. I live in Armidale, NSW.
Hope to hear back soon....
My email address is
maniong@bigpond.net.au

All the best....
Glenn.

POW/MIA , Korean War MANION

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Hamilton County Ohio as his home of record. His remains were never recovered.

Soldier:HERBERT LEE MANION
Born: Feb 9, 1929
Date of loss: Novenber 6, 1951, MIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. The Manion family is one of those missing.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
I just posted several Manion entries on findagrave.com, including headstone photos. Looking for anyone connected to the Manions in Montgomery Co. NY in the 1880s. They came over as Mannion in 1847. Mannion was married to Grady; the families came over together. Thomas Manion fought for the North in the civil war; his brother Patrick changed his name to Manning and went South to fight for the South.

Here's George's obit

Notes for GEORGE W MANION:
OBITUARY: Alpena News Wednesday, September 10, 1947

GEORGE W. MANION
Funeral services for George W. Manion, pioneer businessman of this city will be Friday at 9 at St. Bernard church, the Rev. Honorary pallbearers will be past grand knights of the Knights of Columbus.

Mr. Manion's death occurred Tuesday at 1:10 p.m. at Alpena hospital where he had been taken following a stroke of paralysis suffered Sunday at his home at 115 E. Fletcher. He had been in ill health for some time but was not incapacitated. he was a familiar figure in business places and maintained his active interest in civic and political affairs.

Born Aug. 8, 1867 in Sanilac County, he came here 60 years ago to make his home and later engaged in the grocery business with his brother the late William Manion, which partnership continued for about 30 years. Previous to entering business he had taught at Carsonville and while in Alpena entered the U. of M. where he graduated from the law school but never practiced his profession.

He was a lifelong Democrat and a recognized party leader in the State and 11th district. At one time he was a candidate for the nomination for congressman and at another urged to accept the nomination for U.S. senator. He was postmaster here for 10 years and had also served as an alderman from the fifth precinct.

After dissolution of the Manion Brothers firm, he organized the Manion Oil Co, which he operated until about two years ago when he sold it to the Copping Oil Co, present owners.

One of the founders of Alpena Council Knights of Columbus; he was its first Grand Knight. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen Elks and Holy Name society.

Surviving are his wife Nellie Blaney Manion; two daughters Mrs. C. W. Sauer (Imogene) Detroit; Mrs. Ivan J. All members of the family are at home, James having arrived today coming by plane to Detroit.

More About GEORGE W MANION:
Burial: 12 Sep 1947, Holy Cross Cemetery, Alpena, Alpena County Michigan

Lawrenceville/Hazelwood, Pittsburgh Manions

Hi all. I'm looking for anyone who may have info on James and Sarah Manion of Pittsburgh. They would have come from Ireland in 1860, married the same year, and would have had the following children: James Jr (born in NJ), Mary, Sarah, Martin, Patrick, and Katie (all born in PA). They settled in the Hazelwood neighborhood and-- at some point or another-- in Lawrenceville, Pittsburgh and attended St. Mary's Catholic Church. Does anyone have a match?

I'm looking for descendents of any of these Manions, and I am also trying to trace which county in Ireland James came from. Thanks!

Samantha
