Janice

I sure thank you for responding to my post. The information I had posted was wrong. I now have some of the documents from Johns marrage in 1816, and know of his mother Janny,Jane manes that married Ephraim Wheeler in Warren county in 1804. Jane Wheeler married a Bluford Elisha Dyer in Warren in 1814
So apprently Johns dad must have died or she had John out of wedlock. Kinda odd I would know Johns mother before his father. I have added your math on his age to my notes.
I sure apologize for posting bad information it seem to fit at the time.
Thank you Janice

If anyone can help us past this brick wall we sure would be greatful

Re: KY>IL ? John Manis

Charles,
You may know this by now, but the John Manis on the Indiana Territory records in 1807 was not the same fellow who married Orpah Hill and moved to White Co., Illinois, about 1817 with his father-in-law Isaac Hill.

Both John Manis and Orpah Hill were under-age when they married because they needed parental consent. The original marriage record is at Warren County, Kentucky, Marriage Book A, page 164. The following is an abstract:

Mannen [sic, Mannis], John and Orpy Hill, 10 Jan 1816, dau of Isaac Hill. His consent by mother, Jane Dyer. witt by Elisha Dyer and Richard Hill. ("Warren County, Kentucky marriages, 1797-1851: from the original marriage bonds and consents," Helen Thomas, Mary Rabold, Elizabeth Price, Bowling Green, Kentucky, 1970)

This means that John Manis was no older than age 20 in January 1816, so born after January 10, 1796. John was listed as 21+ on the 1818 census in White Co., Illinois. This gives him a likely birth in 1796/1797. Birth in 1796/1797 fits with the 1820 census which listed him in the age 16-25 range.

At most, this John Manis was age 11 in 1807, and would not have been eligible to vote or serve on a jury. The 1807 John Manis also wasn't his father because John's mother Jane had a second marrige to Elisha Wheeler on February 16, 1804, Warren Co., Kentucky.

Jane Manis Wheeler had a third marriage to Elisha Dyer on 10 Feb 1814 in Warren, Kentucky. Elisha witnessed the Manis-Hill marriage along with Orpah's brother Richard Hill.

John Manis andhis father-in-law Isaac Hill moved to White Co., Illinois, about 1817 and were on the 1818 census there.

According to the following, John Manis and his in-laws were members of the same church and John was a minister in the church when he died about 1843:

"Richard Hill and wife and his father and mother, and John Manis and wife [were early members of the Middle Fork Baptist Church in White Co., Illinois]. Brother Manis afterward became a minister and preached in that church until his death, which occurred about the year 1843." ("History of Gallatin, Saline, Hamilton, Franklin and Williamson counties, Illinois, from the earliest time to the present, together with sundry and interesting biographical sketches, notes, reminiscences, etc.," Ninian Edwards; U S Grant; Nathaniel Pope; John McLean; et al., Chicago : Goodspeed Pub. Co., 1887, at page 427.)

Janice

Martha (Patsy) Manis - Goodman - Hart

Hi, I have been doing some research on the Manis family and have no birth or marriage documentation. I am trying to find the parents of Martha (Patsy) Manis who is supposed to have been born in 1798. She also is supposed to have married William Goodman about 1824 in Hawkins County, TN. She is listed in the 1830 and 1840 Hawkins Co., TN census as Patsy Goodman. She lived on Newman's Ridge and is surrounded by other Manis families in the census information.

In reviewing information on Rootsweb, Seth Manis had children that Martha would fit into - and she has the nickname "Patsy" like Seth's wife. Is there a possibility that she would fit into this family?

William Goodman died about 1845. Patsy and her family moved with a group of people to Henry Co, IN and is in the 1850 Henry Co., IN census, in Franklin Twp. There are also Manis families in Henry County, one being Joseph Manis in Spiceland Twp. right next to Franklin.

I also find it interesting that Martha Goodman moved with her sons, Alfred, William, and Isaac to Pulaski Co., MO about 1857, being in the MO census in 1860, which is the same county Manis families are found: Wade Manis, Caliway Manis, Seth Manes (Monis), Johannah Manis, and John Yates Manis. Is she following family?

I do have one other question. In reviewing the information on Rootsweb, one person mentioned that the Manis families were heavily married into the Lawson and Hart families. In the 1850 IN census, Martha has two young men living with her. They were Calahan and Jabez Hart. I have been trying to figure out the relationship - are they her sons? During the Civil War all the Goodman men and the Hart men enlisted pretty much together for the Union. Calahan Hart kept his last name, but Jabez took the Goodman name and kept it after the war was over. I would think the relationship would have to be pretty close to do that.

Any help with Martha (Patsy) Manis, and her family, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much,
Linda Goodman Benson

The Matilda here is not Matilda Thacker. She is the Matilda Cartwright Hall who married Joseph Manis ~ son of John and Orpah Hill Manis. She is connected to Robert Drew through their Mother (who I believe to be), Elizabeth Sandusky (maiden) Cartwright (1st) Drew (2nd) Goff (3rd) Sullivan (4th). Elizabeth Sandusky ~ daughter of Catherine Creek and Andrew Sandusky. In the 1860 Federal Census, Elizabeth Sullivan and Catherine Basket reside in the home of Joseph Manas (Manis) and Matild Morris (Matilda Manis). They are both listed as "Domestic Mother". Elizabeth Sullivan is 61 yrs. old and Catherine Basket is 90 yrs old. Matilda Manis is 43 yrs old.

I am very interested in your Cherokee Heritage though. I'm trying to find my connection. I want to believe my Drew ancestors were Indian.....it had to come from somewhere.

Happy Hunting,
Tracey

Bob, have you been into the Craighead County Arkansas GenWeb...in it was posted part?/all? of a mercantile store's ledger...the info posted here had to do with those of Monette, or near Monette that purchased coffins...there is one name that was of much interest to me..."Luie Mannus" age 22...date of death March 15, 1915...making him born circa 1893...Luie perhaps a nickname for Lewis?...I know that this Luie would not be the Lewis we seek...for our Lewis was born c. 1879.. I just thought it interesting that there was another derivative of the name Lewis among the Manis' known to have lived in Monette, Ark.

Matilda Jane Manis' parents were Ephraim and Anna Lovelace Manis. Ephraim was born about 1801 and died about 1888. Anna was born about 1802 and probably died before 1880. As for her husband, I have one name as Francis Asbury, one as Francis Asberry, and one as Franklin A. Manis. The Franklin is from Civil War Records. I have never been able to find out anything about his parents. I can, however, give you information about Matilda's parents, siblings, etc. My grandmother was a Manis and Matilda was her great-aunt.
I am not sure if I can help you or not, but I will give it my best shot. I hearld from a long line of Maness, Manis & Manus and so the spelling goes. My line originally came from Scotland and then to parts of TN and MO. I will look through my records and see if I have anything that might match your data. If not I will put out a request to some other folks that are helping me. Do you still live in Chicago? I am in Kenosha that is why I asked. Anyway I will look and message again soon.

I gave up looking a couple years ago, but I am at it again. My name is Jeff Symon, but my birth name is Chester Manis. I was born in Chicago 3-19-1970. My original birth certificate has my birth mom as D. Manis from TN. But that can be made up. I believe the mom that raised me lived in Calumet city for awhile. I was born in Cook County Hospital in Chicago. I really am looking for family heritage, medical history, since I have 2 boys. I believe I was told I was Irish, but wanted to make sure. I did not find out about my real mom until my late mom died in 1991. Can someone please help me. If I do find my original parents, I am not going to seek a relationship, unless they would want one. PLEASE HELP

Maybe your James Manis is the son of Elder John Manis and Orpah (Hill) Manis. James was born in Southern Illinois in what was then White County and moved to Pickett County, Tenn. in 1843 with his wife I believe Ruhama Whitehead? James Manis was born in Illinois in 1824.
If this sounds good let me know I will see what other info we have on James

Charles

Help with Millie/Milly/Malinda Angie/Angline/Angeline/Angaline Meenus/Manis/Manes/Mains/Mannis

Hi,

I'm trying to track down Millie/Milly/Malinda Angie/Angline/Angeline/Angaline Meenus/Manis/Manes/Mains/Mannis. I have a birth date in TN of Oct 12, 1842. She married George Baine Bristow, had 9 kids, and eventually was buried in Grants Pass, OR.

I've seen the family information for Claibourn L. Manes and Sarah Sampley which lists a daughter named Malinda born about 1844. But sometimes that data shows the birth in Arkansas and one source shows that Malinda marrying a Fox and a Martin (evidently a fan of small furry creatures) but not a Bristow. On the 1880 census it shows her father as being born in TN and her mother in NC.

Can anyone help me confirm whether these Malindas are the same person or provide additional information?

Thanks,
Jeff

Hello! I have been searching for the parents and/or siblings of my gg grandmother Rutha Manis, or variation. She was born in TN in 1817. I am not sure of the county. She is said to have been Cherokee. I have a picture of her, and she does in fact look Native American. I would like to correspond with you. Thank you!

Darlene dsteele07@windstream.net

I am the gg-grand daughter to John and Mary. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
