Update on 2013 Manley / Munley / Munnelly Reunion
We have a registration website now and a better developed itinerary.

This event is open to all interested parties. Please pass this on to anyone who may be interested in attending. You must register at the site below.

http://manleymunleyreunion.eventbrite.com/#

Manley Munley Munnelly Family Reunion
Hilton Hotel and Conference Center, Scranton, PA
Sister City of Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland

Manleys and Munleys whose ancestors migrated from County Mayo to Northeast Pennsylvania, and elsewhere, were originally Monnellys and Munnellys in Ireland. Last June, members of this family from around the US traveled to Mayo for a reunion with the local Munnellys, which is still the predominant spelling of our name over there. The reunion was such a success that we have decided to hold another one this year in the U. S.

We chose Scranton, PA as the location, because so many Manleys and Munleys still reside in that area and many who are now dispersed around the U. S. have ancestors who settled in Northeast PA for a generation or two. Scranton and the whole anthracite coal region surrounding it was a popular destination for many who emigrated from the northern half of County Mayo in the 19th century. So many of the Irish who settled in Scranton came from Ballina, and the area surrounding it, that they were declared sister cities.

Aside from its genealogical importance, Scranton is also a fun place to visit if you like architecture. The coal barons made lots of money and they spared no expense when it came to constructing public buildings.

The cost of the reunion is $45 for those who plan to attend the presentations and dinner. The cost is $20 for those attending the presentations only. You can pay by check or cash at the event, but you must use the Register feature above as soon as you know you will be attending. The hotel requires an accurate count in advance. No one can be admitted without having pre-registered. Registration will close at 11:59 PM on Tuesday, June 18.

Itinerary

The details and specific times are still being worked out, but we are leaning toward the following itinerary:

Friday, June 21

7:00-10:00 Meet and greet in the hotel bar.

Saturday, June 22

9:00 Check-in

9:30 Welcome

9:45 Presentation: Origins of the Manley/Munley/Munnelly Surname

10:45 Break

11:00 Presentation: 2012 County Mayo Reunion

12:00 Lunch On Your Own

1:30 Presentation: DNA Testing, The Future of Genealogy

2:30 Break

2:45-4:45 Small Group Discussions: Sharing Our Ancestries

6:00 Dinner

8:00 We plan to adjourn to Kildare's Irish Pub so the group can get together with local Manleys and Munleys, who may not have attended the reunion.

Sunday, June 23

Out-of-towners can choose your own activities for Sunday.

If you want to do research, the Scranton Library is a treasure trove of local records and is open Sundays from 1 to 4.

The Genealogical Research Society of Northeastern Pennsylvania offers a range of services that can help you in researching ancestors who lived in this area.

The Steamtown National Historic Site Railroad Museum is a must-see for anyone interested in antique trains and American railroad history. It’s great fun for kids!

Many of our Manley/Munley ancestors in Pennsylvania were coal miners, so a visit to the Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour might be fun.

Hotel Reservations

If you are coming from out of town, there is a block of rooms reserved at the Hilton, which are discounted for reunion attendees. The Room Code is MMM3. They can only be held until May 24, after which rooms can be booked on an availability basis. The AAA and active military discount is better than the reunion discount. Spread the word to other Manley/Munleys you might know.

Marianne Manley Granoff
Albuquerque, NM
granoff@zianet.com

Ok - first post did not think about that! My enquiry is for a line of Manley's originating from St George's, Southwark, London UK. F. William Manley b abt 1809, Mother Ann, from Hull, b abt 1807/10 - children George b1838 and Walter b1850 are the ones I am interested in to further research my tree. I am getting conflicting tree connections with regards who married Harriet Yelding (which George Manley) and who married Fanny Trapnell (which Walter - if it is the one with Reuben as a middle name - who were his parents?).
Any help would be appreciated!

Jackie

Which Manley married who?

Can anyone enlighten me as to which Walter Manley married Fanny Trapnell - the one born in 1850 (11mths old on 1851census) or the one born 1847 (3years old on 1851census) both Walter's parents are called William and Ann Manley and are either "Artists" or "Showmen". There is also another query I have on who married Harriet Yelding - I have researched and found a George Benjamin Manley b1838 to William Manley and Ann Willis Duke, have found the marriage banns where the father is listed as William, marriage took place 24 May 1861 but have been told it was not this George but another - does anyone else have any further information as to who/which Manley married who and who their parent's were so that I can further my tree - I want to ensure I am going down the right branch of my tree. Any information would be appreciated. My connection is Charles Edward Manley b1873 son of Charles Edward Manley b1845 son of William Manley and Ann Willis Duke.
Many thanks Jackie

2013 Manley / Munley / Munnelly Reunion
Hi folks,

Last year, there was a Munnelly/Munley/Manley Reunion in County Mayo in June that was a huge success, thanks in no small part to the hard work of the organizers—Kathy Manley Short, Mary Munnelly, and everyone who helped. Many of us who were able to travel to Mayo, and others who could not, have expressed an interest in holding a reunion sometime this year in the U.S. in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Many Manleys and Munleys who are now dispersed around the U. S. have ancestors who settled in Northeast PA for a generation or two.

To facilitate signing up for the reunion, an "event" has been created on Facebook with links to hotels, etc. at

http://www.facebook.com/events/445388065549942/

Scranton and the whole anthracite coal region surrounding it was a popular destination for many of the Irish who emigrated from the northern half of County Mayo in the 19th century—including the Monnellys and Munnellys, who became Manleys and Munleys not long after they arrived. Mayo emigrants followed family members who wrote home about plentiful jobs, first in the Iron Mill and later in the coal mines. A recent resident of Mayo has reported that reading the names on the graves in the cemeteries around Scranton is like being back home. So many of the Irish who settled in Scranton came from Ballina, and the area surrounding it, that they were declared sister cities.

Like the one in Mayo, our reunion in Scranton will be a work in progress. At the moment, it looks like the following:

Saturday will probably consist of a tour of Manley/Munley-related sites. No doubt there will be a cemetery or two.

Many of our Manley/Munley ancestors in Pennsylvania were coal miners, so a visit to the Lackawanna Coal Mine tour (see link) might be fun.

As we did in Mayo, we can have a private dinner on Saturday evening.

The dinner can be followed by drinks, to which we can invite local Manleys and Munleys for a meet and greet, as we did in Mayo.

Those who wish to spend the night (see hotel links) can choose your own activities for Sunday. If you want to do research, the local library, which is worth visiting just to see the building, is a treasure trove of local records. Unfortunately, it is only open on Sundays from 1 to 4. The Steamtown National Historic Site Railroad Museum (see links) is a must-see for anyone interested in antique trains and American railroad history. It’s great fun for kids! Aside from its genealogical importance, Scranton is also a fun place to visit if you like architecture. The coal barons made lots of money and they spared no expense when it came to constructing public buildings.

Let us know if you can attend or are at least thinking about it.

Marianne Manley Granoff
Albuquerque, NM
granoff@zianet.com

and

Peter Manley
San Diego, California
pmanley@cox.net

This information has also been posted at The Munnelly Connection on Facebook at

http://www.facebook.com/groups/38637906091/

This is a private group of over 220 Munnellys, Munleys, and Manleys on Facebook, but requests to join are usually granted within the same day.
James Manley

My line was in Jack Co. Tx and James died there. They were there during the Civil War. Him and his brother, Joseph were part of the Texas Rangers Frontier District while most of the men were gone fighting, the Indian Raids increased and this group paroled and fought them. There seems to be two James and two Josephs in the county at the same time, hard to follow what little records there are. He was buried where is now Perrin Tx. That time it was the Lassiter Ranch. Has anyone found that grave. Also Mary Jane Manley Rowland (James daughter) inherited something in Ft. Worth area early 1900's maybe a little earlier. Have found nothing on that. Her great Aunt Mary Jane raised her.

Gerald "Jerry" Manley, here. Irene was my grandmother; married to Gerald Manley, of Scranton. They had three boys, Thomas (my father), Jerry "Bud", and Leo. We spent a lot of time at my grandfather's sisters' homes, Katie and Annie (Ann Manley Kimble), on Far Street in Scranton, when we were younger. Cousins from Bud and Leo are still alive and well, as are three of my four siblings. I, too, have been off the ancestry network for a good while and would like to get back into it. I do remember exchanging emails with a few of you some years back. What information is being saught?

I also have a William Meredith who is the brother of Sanford, b abt 1806 in NC.

I'm having a difficult time tracking this Manley family outside of IN, where my grandfather was born.

Martha Manley, sister of Sanford, is my great grandmother.

Through documentation from an IN library book, my great grandfather and great grandmother were indeed cousins.

Could be the same family, I don't know. Would like to hear from you.

Munley / Manley Surname Project

Family Tree DNA has announced their Holiday Sale on several DNA tests. I am recommending that any Manley male who wants to help all Munleys, Munnellys, Manleys, etc. find their Irish relatives and make connections to specific locations, take the y-DNA 37 marker test. It is on sale for $119.00 US or about 94 euros starting now and ending at midnight CST on December 31, 2012. See
http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Munley

These tests are designed strictly for genealogy. They cannot be used in court to determine paternity or for most other purposes.

All you have to do is scrape the inside of your cheek for several seconds and return the kit to the lab. We would, of course, like to have information that you know about your own ancestry to use in comparing your test results to other Munleys, Munnellys, Manleys, etc. whose results match yours (indicating you share a common ancestor).

You might also consider giving someone a test kit for a holiday gift ;-)

The Munley / Manley Surname Project is here:
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Munley/

Contact me if you want more information.

Marianne Manley Granoff

Volunteer Project Administrator
Munley Surname Project
granoff@zianet.com

Another Rescued MANLEY Photo, Ionia, MI-Possible OH or MN Family

The other day I managed to pick up another Manley photo. This time it appears to be a teen girl (best guess) & on the back is written "Sister Mercy J. Manley." I've looked close to make sure the writing isn't Mary. Even my husband thinks it's Mercy. It was taken in Ionia, MI.

In doing some checking there are two Mersy Manleys. One from Ohio & she married 3 times. The other one was from Minnesota, living around the same time as the Ohio Mersy.
Which one it might be-I have no idea. The style of the photo & her clothing looks to me as if it was taken very late 1800s, very early 1900s.

I'd like to find family to send it to. Please contact me at: digginroots@yahoo.com for details. Thank you.

Delphia Manly

Does anyone know of documentation that supports the online trees that state that Delphia Ann Manly (born 1827) is the daughter of Richard (born 1807) and Elizabeth (Kendall) Manly? They all lived in Henry County, Tennessee. Elizabeth is my multi-great Aunt, and I have little-to-no real information (documented) about her children or descendents. Many trees online are carelessly put together and people just make guesses without having real sources of info (even family info). Census data does not clarify the relationship.

Good find ... I've been searching SC records for so long and wondering if I've hit a dead end. All I get back from SC is that "Sherman burned all of our records".
We will review what you have uncovered. Thanks for the update!
DNA indicates that we are a different line than the New England Manley's. We do have a connection in Britain, but can't [so far] connect the bridge to US. TAke a look at the Manley Group on Family History DNA. I'm #13008.

Responding to an old message so I hope you're still there. In the 1790 census in Laurens county, SC there were 3 Manleys: your William (d.1799), my ancestor William and John. In your William's will he names his "trusted friend" Joel Burgess as executor. John and Joel served on a jury at the same time, so at least your William, John and Joel all knew each other. In the Public Member Trees the descendants of Joel state that he was born in Bedford county, VA. and lived from 1735-1803. I was in the Allen County Library recently and searched through the books for Bedford county, VA. I found one reference to Joel and his wife Eleanor. I also found references to a John and a William Manley, several times together in the same record which suggests to me they were brothers. Records were between 1754 and 1778. Earliest records for Manleys in Laurens county were from 1786. I think the John and William Manley who were in Bedford county were the same two who relocated to Laurens county and Joel probably moved about the same time. The only other Manley mentioned in Bedford county was a George Manley in 1777. In 1759 there were records of lawsuits of several groups/individuals vs "Manley", first name not given. I also found a will for a William Heath (d. 1774) whose wife was Martha. Two daughters named in the will were Eleanor Burgess and Elizabeth Manley. Your William's wife was Elizabeth so it looks like Wm and Joel were in-laws.Michelle LePaule
