Following are memories written down in about 1969 by Mary Alice (Gillian) Hall, now deceased, whose mother was a Mannering -- does this information ring a bell with anyone?

"My Great Grandfather (mother's grandfather) was French and served with Napoleon's army in the Seige of the Alps. We think it was the French Alps. In 1794-1797 he came to the United States. The name he bore in France was spelled Mannering. He had to change the name leaving out one -n- thus changing the name to Manering."

"He came to Ohio and Mother, Margaret Ann Manering's, father who was Masquil Manering lived in Galia County, Ohio, was a United Brethren Minister, also a foundryman."

"Mother's mother, Caroline Barnhart, came from Germany at the age of 18. She learned to read English by comparing the German Bible and English Bible. They lived near Gallipolis and Grandfather and Grandmother died in their middle 80s."

"They had two sons, James and George, and three daughters, (mother) Margaret Ann, Mary Jane and Minerva. All were raised in Galia County, Ohio."
