I don't have the answer to your question about Julia Wooton & John Henry Manners, because my connection is much further back than yours, it's during the 17th centuary.
Oddly enough I do have ancestors from Lincolnshire in another part of my tree.

Hi. My great aunt Julia Wootton married John Henry Manners in 1893. She was born at Wymeswold, Leicestershire, England, and he was born at Great Gonnerby, Lincolnshire, England.
John Henry's father was John Manners, and his mother was Sarah (nee Oliver).
Julia and John Henry Manners had 2 children: George Wootton-Manners, b.1891, and Clark(e) Manners, b.1900. Believe both being born in Gainsborough, Lincs.
Does anyone have any information about this family, or the children, George and Clark(e)? Believe there is a link back to the Dukes of Rutland lineage.

Re: Manners family history

My ggg grandmother was Anne Manners born 1722 in Averham Nottinghamshire. Her parents were Thomas and Mary Manners. The following are the couples other children: Mary 1711, Sarah 1714, Ellen 1716. All were born in Averham Notts. I haven't found marriage data for Thomas and Mary. I don't know whether Thomas and Mary had children before 1711 or after 1722 in Averham or other areas Rutland or leicestershire or other parts of Notts.

From LDS, a John and catherine Manners gave birth to Thomas Baptist Manners in Feb 1678 in Branston leicestershire. The first Duke of Rutland John Manners married Catherine Noel in 1673. Catherine's father's name was Baptist Noel. John Manners was a member of parliament for leicestershire at the time. He also held the rank of Lieutenant of Leicestershire at the same time. This connection to my Manners is a possibility but it is not validated.

In 1717, the third Duke of Rutland married Bridget Sutton a weathy heiress in Averham.

If you able to clarify the Manners family for me, I would greatly appreciate it.

Re: Richard Manners & Letitia Sandys

Thank you for your reply and sorry to be so long responding.
I was only guessing that Richard Manners was born about 1808. In fact I know virtually nothing about him except he was in the military and he married Letitia Sandys. The only reference I've found to the marriage was in a document published online and that seems to contain several typos. According to that record they married in Kiltormer, Galway, Ireland, 20 July 1831 and Letitia Sandys was the daughter of Abraham Sandys, Esq., of Chesterfield (House) Galway, which I think is about a mile east of the village of Kiltormer (according to Google Maps).

According to a handwritten note passed down through family members, Charles Hedges Manners was the son of Col. Richard Manners and Letitia Sandys. Letitia's parents were Abraham Sandys and "Miss Eyreville" (more on her later). Abraham Sandys father was a Rev. Sandys. (There was a Rev. Abraham Sandys of Dublin, St. Patricks Cathedral, who had quite a reputation. I think this may be the same fellow.)

The note also states that Rev. Sandys had a daughter Anne Sandys who married Rev. John Roberts. They had a son Sir Abraham Roberts and he had a son Lord Roberts. All of this information about the Sandys/Roberts family checks out so I have no reason to doubt the information about the ancestors of Charles Hedges Manners.

As for siblings of Charles, the only one I think I have found was a Richard Abraham Manners, born in Wigan, Lancashire, in 1834. He appears to have had a career in the Scots Guards and served in India. To date I have not found any other children of Richard and Letitia. As there were quite a few years between Richard Abraham and Charles Hedges I suspect there must have been other siblings.

The "Miss Eyreville" mentioned in the note seems to be Maria Anne Eyre who married Abraham Sandys in Dublin in 1798. I think they had at least three children (probably all born in Ireland - Dublin or Galway) Letitia, Louisa, and Abraham. Louisa Sandys married a John Berry.

Eyreville is/was a large house/estate at Kiltormer, Galway. The Eyre famiy have quite a history in that area. There's an impressive family history available online. But Maria Anne Eyre is not mentioned in it. However, on the LDS web site, I found the baptism of a child by this name in Wye, England in 1781. Parents were Thomas Eyre and Letitia. Further checking of the baptismal entry turned up the fact that the father was in the Middlesex Regiment.

A Thomas Dancer Eyre, of the Middlesex regiment, married Letitia Cole in 1788 after her first husband died. Thomas Dancer Eyre owned Eyreville at the time. He and Letitia had two children after their marriage: Thomas Stratford Eyre and Elizabeth Florence Eyre. I strongly suspect that Maria Anne Eyre was also their child.

I don't know where Charles Hedges Manners was born. He married Dora Russell but I don't know where or exactly when. They lived in Edenderry, Offaly, Ireland, and had about 6 children - 5 daughters and 1 son. I knew their daughter Kathleen who came to Canada. Her son is still living but he knows little about his grandfather Charles, grandmother Dora and his ancestors.

Any information you can provide about this family would be most appreciated.

Margaret

John and Sallie are also my ancestors. He seems to be the dead-end in all searches in that line. Has anyone yet found who his parents were, and where he really came from? The three predominant theories seem to be the Isle of Jersey (one of the Channel Islands), or Virginia, or that he was born near Pittsburgh PA. No one seems to have solid evidence of any of the above. So, just wondering, in this multi-year thread, if anyone has dug up any more on the guy! Thanks.
Malcolm Manners

Hi Severine.

Saw your post today. I have a large packet of info on Alexander Manners from a pension application file I came across. It charts his name, info on his wife, his marriage (22 Mar 1868, married by Rev Joseph Banks at Laurel Hill, Dekalb County TN) & it lists his 7 children (names, dates, where they were born & who delivered them).
Unfortunately, it does not name his parents. I would be interested in learning how you know his mother's name is Catherine. If she is the Catherine I have in my records, the Elisabeth you mentioned is likely her daughter & it is possible that we can begin to tie some family lines together.
If you are interested in sharing info, contact me directly at gaijin6@aol.com.

Hi been reading all your information, does anyone know anything about Manners in Calne Wiltshire?, I have Ann Duck married to Henry Manners, her sister Alice married to Stephen Clifford & both sets of grandparents related again by their grandchildren Patience Manners and Thomas Clifford. Henry was a descendant of the Earl of Rutland, as I'm a descendant of the Cliffords & Ducks I would like to know why the Manners married into the Family twice!

I've searched through my data, but it mostly relates to the Durham lot. I have a habit of collecting strays, wherever I see the surname manners, i make a note. No joy, I'm afraid, and I've even searched the census too 71 and 81, but your William is illusive. No Williams until 1891. I've had a look through Births, and can only find William ROBERT, Greenwich Jan/Mar 1870. Thomas his father is a mystery too. Vital Records were as much use a s a choolate fireguard too. Sorry I couldn't be of any help

If you email me at lib.windram@tiscali.co.uk , I can send you my Manners file ( gedcom), and what I have on the Manners family and the Black Boy Pit. If we are talking about the same Joseph, his brother George was the one who moved to Coundon and started this family venture.

Someone once told me that My Joseph married an Alice Southron, but I have nothing to verify this claim.
Looking through my file, might be of help, eg, looking for other Christian names which might be repeated in your family. As well as having a son Joseph, Thomas and Rosamunde had a daughter called Philadelphia. Thomas's mother was Eleanor Taylor, a name which repeats down several genterations

(not quite sure whether you'll get the message I sent you through the connection service, so here it comes again!)

Hi, sorry to bother you again. I have exchanged info about the Manners family with Lorraine for the last few days and she told me that you and me might be more closely related than her and me, so I just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Séverine, I am Fremch but have lived in England for the past ten years. More importantly I am a Manners descendants. My ggrandfather was James R. Manners ( 1878-1960). His father was Alexander Manners (1838-1893), whose mother was Catherine Manners (abt 1800- abt 1880). I haven't proved it yet but I strongly suspect that Catherine was Elizabeth (Manners/Baughman) and Michael Manners' sister. Do these names sound familiar?

Séverine

Manners of Smith County, Tennessee

Hi, I was wondering if any of you had any information on Alexander Manners (12 Oct 1838, TEN- 25 Nov 1893, TEN). He lived in Smith County for most of his life but also in DeKalb County and Wilson County. He married Amanda Exum in March 1868 in DeKalb Co.
I particularly need information on his parents. I know that his mother, Catherine/Catharine MANNERS(abt 1800,VA-abt 1890, TEN)lived in Smith Co and was maried to a Thomas Claxton/Clackstone/ Claseton in 1850, that she lived with him and an Elizabeth Baukman(maiden name Manners, born in VA about 1800) , who was probably her sister, in 1860. Unfortunately I cannot find anything on Alexander's father. Can anyone help me with my "Manners"? are they related to all the other Manners form Smith County?
Thanks in advance,

Séverine Mahillon-Goddard (great great granddaughter of Alexander Manners)
Hi, my message wasn't meant for you but for Lorraine, sorry for wasting your time! But are you the person who sent me a link to view the 1850 Census though the Ancestry website? if so thank you.
Séverine
