I am a direct decendant of W.S.B. Owens the son of Nancy Owens. Apparently (according to family legend) Nance Owens was either married to or had a son whose father was a man, perhaps a doctor Beall. At some point Joseph Owens (Nancy's father) legaly adopted his grandson (W.S.B. Owens).
I have a copy of a letter addressed to W.S.B. dated 1859 from Joseph Owens in which he mentions the location of "Buck" Owens and several other family members. This letter is widely circulated in our family. I have photos of Joseph, Buck and W.S.B.
I would love to have any information, anecdotes or photos and will share my family history.
I have quite a bit of information from Joseph on down.

Hi, I stumbled across this interesting thread, I hope I can help.
The area to which these families ended up was called Warraquil, before it got changed to Netherby, which is definitely near Nhill. Bridget and John Manning, plus 2 other Mannings, a Meaney couple, Daniel and Eliza Jane Purtle, plus Thresea Jane Purtle, are all buried in the Netherby Cemetery, of which I am sec. Mrs Margaret Purtle nee Herreen has a ripper headstone detailing some family history. I am also interested in some of the family connections (all very Catholic) - email me via googling our cemetery.

I googled "Louise Edrington Willis" and quickly found two sources of that book, which was privately printed back in 1953.

http://www.alibris.com/search/books/author/Willis,%20Louise%... has it for sale for under $12

http://www.ancestralbooks.com/SurnamesM.html also has it for under $12

http://www.quintinpublications.com/familygenealogies_mad.htm...
will print a copy on CD or paper but it may take a while; this is backup if the other two have actually sold their copies.

But you can also access it on line via Ancestry.com. In the search menu, choose card catalog, then search on Reverend Nathaniel Manning. The book will pop up, and you can read it using the chapter headings or search it.

I'm the Edward Buchanan Manning branch. If you find you're a descendant of any branch, I'd love to be in touch; contact me.

Ellen

>I am in the process of adding to my database all people listed in
>DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM MANNING published in 1902. After posting to my
>database I then update my Elleman, Scantland database on rootsweb.com about
>once a week.
>
> I have all people in my line posted. Starting at the beginning, am
> currently working on posting only those descendants who have their own
> narrative included in the book. When I finish I will go back and add those
> that were not posted the first time through.
>
> I will try to answer look up requests.
>
> Don Scantland
I don't know how long you have been doing genealogy, but I'm new at it myself, and after a few months it became painfully apparent that nearly every family has multiple individuals with the same given name and surname.
The Manning family, which I was researching back to a target ancestor, is just huge - and every generation of it is filled with multiple Johns, Williams, Samuels, Nathaniels, and Benjamins!
It was an exciting nightmare to sort them out. Later on I found that one of them had married a lady with a name identical to at least one, possibly two, other ladies who lived in the same place at the same time but were unrelated.
Things like this are part of what makes genealogy a thrilling mystery - you get so thrilled with you finally know for sure that you've located the right person!

Reality check ... Joseph Manning is not an uncommon name in England in that time period and records were not as well kept. Without more to go on, like the location he came from or other family names to connect up (like father and son or two brothers who came over together), it's looking for a needle in a haystack. Even if you happen to find one born at the right time, there's no telling it's your guy. And that's only counting the English, and not the possibility of a Manheim who took Manning. Good luck!

Here's an interesting one with lots of potential relatives among the Mannings who traveled together, but they came into Boston, and you're looking for Charles County. This is excerpted from a series of court cases all resulting from one voyage from Dartmouth to New England in the ship Hannah and Elizabeth.

Passengers that came in the ship Hannah and Elizabeth, Mr. Lott Gourding, master, Capt. Nicholas Manning, undertaker: Mrs. Anstice Manning, sr., Anstice Manning, jr., Margrett Manning, Sarah Manning, Jacob Manning, Thomas Manning, Elizabeth Walsh, Joane Brownestis, Margrett Willing, Annis Foord, Anne Killegrove, Margrett Bouey, Grace Stiver, Mary Peirce, Stephen Bickford, Robert Cane, Joseph Manning, Richard Oliver, Richard Thomas, Wm. Hutchings and his wife, George Martine and his wife, Mr. John Jackson and his wife, Clement Jackson, Sarah Jackson, Agnes Jackson, Mrs. Joane Deareing, Sarah Dealing, Joseph Dearing, Tho. Knollman, John Norway, James Tomling, Mr. Thomas Towsey, and his wife and child and servant boy, Moses Bearild, James Mudd, Richard Gourding, Mr. Aron Smith, Mr. John Cally, sr., John Cally, jr., Thomas Baker. The eight Jacksons were upon agreement between Capt. Manning and John Jackson, to have passage from Dartmouth to New England, on account of labor performed by said John Jackson. This list was sworn to by Capt. Gourding and Benjamin Rawlings in Boston, Nov. 4, 1679, before John Richards,* commissioner.

For more info, see the following available through Google Books:

Records and Files of the Quarterly Courts of Essex County, Massachusetts

Thank you very much for your response. I do not have a Nancy Lannum or a Robin Manning. If you have the time go see my short website at www.ponzermanning.webs.com for a full list of all the mannings I have from eastern NC.

I would like to see the line from Robin and Nancy if you would like to share.

Solomon (1803) and Charity were reportedly (1850 NC Census) from SC and moved to Beaufort County NC.

Thanks so very much - Steve Manning!

Hi, My name is Taylor Manning and John Robert Manning is my 2nd great grandfather. He is the father of Mattie and James David Manning along with 8 other children. JR Manning was married to Sarah Jane Stevens in Alabama around 1840. The 1850 census from Southern Reserve Desoto County Mississippi shows the Manning family living there. John Robert Manning died abt. 1866 in Mississippi. Sarah Jane moved the family to Chico, Wise, Texas. James David Manning was a Texas Ranger along with his Mother's brother Capt. Stevens who was quite prominent in that area.

Nathaniel Manning 1738-1808 or 1738-1777 and whom did he marry?

I am a descendant of the Reverend Nathaniel Manning, subject of Louise Edrington Willis' book, "The Descendants of the Reverend Nathankel Manning, MD: Strictly a Family Affair" which can be perused using Ancestry.com's card catalog.

According to the book, which was published in the 1950s, Reverend Manning was born August 19, 1738 of Nathaniel William Manning (1707-1766) and Mary Harris. He graduated from what is now Princeton in 1762 (letter from Princeton dated 1930). In 1767 he was elected to the Medical Society of New Jersey in 1767 based on testimonials from teh Faculty of Philadelphia (letter from the society dated 1952). He was called to the ministry in 1771, given his Title to Orders by the Hampshire Parish of Virginia, ordained in England 1772, returned to Virginia and served his parish until his death ca Feb 1772 (based on the date his will was probated). He married once to Mary Hite and had one son, Jacob, who was born in 1774. He is referred to as the first cousin of the James Manning who was first president of Brown University, who was born the same year and who graduated the forerunner of Princeton the same year. The Reverend Nathaniel Manning is memorialized by windows placed in the Washington Cathedral in Washington, DC in the 1950s.

Against this there are no less than 15 public trees on Ancestry.com offering that the same Nathaniel Manning who was born 19 aug 1738 in Piscataway, NJ died 18 Aug 1808 in Woodbridge NJ, and many of them show that he married Jane Robbins in 1760 in New Jersey and had a bunch of children. And, of course, they connect to the Manning lineage back to Jeffrey and Hepzibah Manning.

I have posted comments on these trees asking that they either provide documentation that their lineage is correct, or to please correct their trees. There were apparently multiple Manning families in New Jersey and is very possible that there were two Nathaniel Mannings at about the same time in the same place. It is also possible that my history is wrong, but I'm not willing to accept that unless someone shows me documentation of the alternate history.

I'm sort of paying the price for keeping my tree private rather than public, but if I make any errors when testing out theories of my lineage, I don't want to confuse others.

I'm posting here to see if anyone can help with one of two basic questions: how can I determine the source of the other lineage and the reason it has cropped up, and if my line is correct, is there anything more I can do to fix the misinformation?

Thanks in advance.
Ellen
