I get more confused too! My dad had a 1st cousin who was Tom(THomas) Manns. Then he also had a brother Tom Manns, along with other brothers, Monroe, and Otto. They grew up on Mans Knob - Little Harts. Right next to where the Mans Cememtary is located.

I bet they are all intertwined somehow. I would love to know. I know the Gartins are a part of it somehow.

Hi, My name is Linda Kay Browning. Susan Gartin is my grandfather Hubert's mother and Elias Browning was his father. My father was Stacy Alonzo Browning, all from Harts, Lincoln County. All buried at Mans knob Browning-Gartin Cemetery.
I have Elia's death certificate and on it says mother Elizabeth Manns. I am trying to find out why. Susan's father was Isaac Gartin Sr. Susans son out of wedlock was Isaac Griffith Gartin (or Jr.) by a mr Smith. On the cert it does state her husband as Elias Browning. Miles, her son, and brother to my grandfather Hubert was the informant. Who was Elizabeth Mans? Everyone says Isaac Gartin Sr was married to Elizabeth Margaret Toney. Was this the Elizabeth? Was she a Man(n)s? Thanks for any help. I did print out pictures from some site that showed Elias and susan, and manns/gartins and Tom Manns. I am perplexed.
Re: Le Mans (France) origin of some people surnamed Mans/Manns

This is an interesting observation. My Mans ancestry came from Luxembourg. We were not able to get back far enough to see but the feeling is there that the ancestry came from nearby Le Mans, France. The person tracing my ancestry was a Luxembourg native and he said the records would not allow him to go back any further than the mid 1700's.

The spelling of the name Manns---The Mans family came to America in 1852. They first settled in Wisconsin where some stayed and others moved on. One brother of my great grandfather moved to Kansas and changed the spelling from Mans to Manns apparently to disassociate himself from the remainder of the family. That is one reason for the spelling of the that name. Yes, I have heard of Manns having a Jewish or English background. One of those mysteries of life!

Le Mans (France) origin of some people surnamed Mans/Manns

It seems clear that that the name Manns is most often German, and occasionally Jewish, and that Mans is a Dutch surname.
A famous bearer of this surname was Sir August Manns, who was born in Pomerania and went to Britain in Queen Victoria's reign, becoming a famous musical conductor. He died in 1907.
I've recently discovered information that might be helpful to people researching English ancestors called Mans/Manns. The name doesn't appear to have any links to the Germanic/Anglo-Saxon word "mann". The presence of the double n (and of the final s, which makes the name appear to be a possessive or patronymic) has only served to obscure the fact that probably most English (as opposed to German, Dutch, or Jewish) people with the surname are descended from immigrants from Le Mans (birthplace of the first Plantagenet king, Henry II, and held by his father, the Count of Anjou) in France to the Welsh Marches (especially Hereford)during the 1100s when the Normans were populating the Marches with their followers. At that time Le Mans (now capital of the Sarthe) was in the French province of Maine, owned by England until 1204. Two of these immigrants, Matthew de Mans and Simon de Mans, were knights ("militaris"). All these people called de Mans (sometimes written de Mauns) were landowners in the Hereford, Worcester, Gloucester regions. That would explain the prevalence of the quite rare English name Mans/Manns in those regions (especially Gloucester) today. The de Mans family are mentioned in medieval records published recently in the ongoing Victoria County History of England series and other academic sources. Some are already online. Google the following individuals (it helps to put the names beween quotation marks): Simon, Matthew (two separate men), Walter, William, Richard, Gilbert de Mans and you'll see what I mean. In a few cases (e.g. Richard) they appear as de Mauns. But this is really de Mans (Frauncis for Francis was a similar medieval spelling). Possibly there are other de Mans individuals in records not yet online. Don't forget the del Mans spelling too - this appears in medieval Latin records!
Margaret,
Ross was Henry Mans and Elizabeth Malone's son. I knew Ross had married Mary Harbison and have their daughter Essie, but that's all I have. I would appreciate having their children.
Thank you so much
Linda

MY LATE WIFE, JONCIE MARIE NEE KILLINGER WAS THE GRANDDAUGTHER OF CHARLES LAWSON KILLINGER. CHARLES AND ALTHEA WERE THE CHILDREN OF JOSEPH BARRINGER AND HESTER ANN KILLINGER (NEE LAWSON). MY RECORDS SHOW THE CHILDREN OF ALTHEA AS JOHN CHARLES MANS AND VIOLET (NAMS) HEBERT. IT LISTS BENTON WALLACE HEBERT AS HER SON. I HAVE A LOT OF INFORMATION ON THE LAWSON AND KILLINGER FAMILY, BUT WHAT I WROTE ABOVE, IS ALL I HAVE ON ALTHEA'S SIDE OF THE FAMILY.
BILL BOEGLIN
