Bill,

I just found this post and really hope you are still available for information. My name is Owen Manske, and Janet is my aunt.

I have recently began building our tree on ancestory.com, but can not trace Manske past my great-grandfather. My father says he was from Stettin. He was born in 1861 and migrated here in 1862 with his wife Albertina.

I am almost positive I have found them in a passenger list, but the page they are listed on is grouped in with other pages from a ship they could not have possible been on. I am still trying to figure that one out. I suppose it could be total coincidence, but I find it more likely that the ships manifests got scattered. :)

My father said that he is pretty sure William had 2 or more brothers in Germany, and the eldest brother was disabled in some way which meant that he could not perform his involuntary service in the German army. My dad said that this meant one of his brothers had to fulfill it, and that the other brothers nominated my great-grandfather. he said that this was the reason he packed up and came to the US.

My father also said that my grandfather (William's son Bernard) had a cousin Herman living in Oshkosh.

I don't know if any of this ties in with the info you might have- but I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Owen Manske
owen.manske@gmail.com

I know this is an old thread, but I hope you get this. I'm interested in information on your side of the family (Manske/Kadind). Augusta Emilia Schwandt was my great grandfather's (August Johann Schwandt) sister. August married Hulda Stelter on 2/24/1889 and had 7 children, one of them being my grandfather, William George Schwandt.
What cemetary are you looking at? I am related to the Manske family of Wisconsin. Richard b. Aug. 14, 1871, death May 10, 1963 married to Henriette Dietz May 4, 1895. Henriette b. May 28, 1875, death April 6, 1932. Had 5 children, Albert C., Erna, Herbert Norbert, Otto and Hertha. I think they are buried at Arlington Cemetary in Milwaukee. I haven't come forward with my geneology yet. Only as far back as I can. Any help? Hope so. Happy Hunting!
Herbert J. Manske Jun 14 1909 - Jun 10 1946

My surname is Manske, but not related

I checked the cenus for 1910, 1920,1930, and found a Herbert Manske, son of Otto C. and Helen Manske. This could be your family.

If I were you, I would obtain for Milwaukee County Courthouse a copy of his (Herbert) birth and/or death record. Or you could write Madison Vital Records. Sites are online. The price I believe is $15.00 per record.

Hi Christine
Unfortunately I do not have a Helena Manski in my line that I know about. Main ancestors of mine were Johann STELLMACH md to Annie MANSKI. They emigrated to Australia on the same ship - oops I mean the MANSKI and STELLMACH families and they had children of similar ages so understandably there were marriages between the families. I haven't come across a Helena amongst either families, however it is possible that Helena was a sister who also emigrated. Sorry I am unable to help. Regards Helena

My grandmother is Evelyn (Dahlke) Whitted, now Terry, living now in South Dakota near several of her children. Her husband was Dolph Whitted. Her mother was Bertha Louise Scheer and father was August Dahlke (There are more than one A.D. in listings). I am trying to locate some of my family tree branches. Bertha Scheer was a Manske, listed as married in Nebraska. Any help or photos of any of these folks would be tremendously appreciated. Happy to supply postage. Other side of the family with difficulties is great grandfather Charles Albert Sims and wife Ethel Jennie McMullen--he is from Pennsylvania originally.

His sisters were: Minnie Wagner, Augusta Hafer, Lena Lietz and Hattie Manske. His sisters all lived in Berrien County, Michigan. His parents' names were Carl Manske and Charlotte or Hannah Herring Manske.
Any information would be appreciated. Thank you.
Chicago/Steager, Illinois Manske's/Paul Manske Family

I was wondering if anyone has any information on the Chicago Paul Manske family. He was my GrGrGrandfather. The only information I have on Paul (besides a family picture) is from the U.S. Census which states he was born in June 1860 and it said his birthplace was "Germany". He was married to a Margaret "Maggie" (Weixelman(n)) who was born 28 Aug 1871 on the German Austrian border, thats all we were ever told, and she died 6 Nov 1950 in Chicago. The family attended St. Boniface Catholic Church in Chicago and I believe they might have actually been Polish? They never told my Grandfather anything about their family background. Paul & Margaret Manske had the following children. Edward Manske, Joseph Manske (married to "Lil"), Louis Manske (married to a "Dorthy"), Clarence Manske (married first to "Francis" then "Eleanor" second), Margaret "Marge" Manske (married first to a John Snowden and then to a Joe Chat), Louise Manske (married a Clarence Dietzel), and then Theresa Francis Manske (my GrGrandmother who married Nick Renderman/originally Rindermann). I have all of the information to present via my Great Grandmother, but nothing further on her family than what I posted. If anyone has a connection to this Chicago Family please get in touch with me either through this post or via e-mail kronprinz_allen@yahoo.de any information is appreciated. Good luck in all your research.
Allen Renderman
FDL, Wisconsin

Earlier this week, a relative let me know that I was using the wrong ancestor's photo for Albert Frederick Martin Manzke. The correct photo is below, plus a photo of him with his wife Anna Elizabeth Wenderoth (Manzke) who was from Hesse. They met soon after each emigrated to Baltimore, Maryland, in the late 1880's. The family story handed down says that they would never have met back in the old country. (One in Stettin, Pommern, Prussia while the other in Hesse.)

Bill Manzke
bmanzke@columbus.rr.com
My great-grandfather was Albert Frederick Martin Manzke. He was born in Stettin, Prussia, in November. He arrived in Baltimore, Maryland 7 March 1883 on the S.S. America from Bremmen and became a naturalized citizen of the USA in 1899. He married Anna Elizabeth Wenderoth from Hesse and they raised 4 children there, one of which was my grandfather Henry John Manzke. Albert Frederick Martin Manzke died in Baltimore prior to the 1930 census.

Does anyone have any documentation of the Manzke/Manske family while in Stettin?

Bill Manzke
bmanzke@columbus.rr.com
Does anyone know how to contact Janet Manske Madson? We may be related. Both of our ancestors came from Stettin, Pommern, Prussia.

My Great Grandfather, Albert Frederick Martin Manzke, was born in Stettin in November 1856. He came to Baltimore, MD, in 1883 on the ship S.S. America, and then raised a family there. Here is a link to my page about him on Ancestry.com :

http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/person.aspx?tid=48810&pid=-...

A contact in Germany sent me a couple images out of old Stettin directories from the 1880’s, but as of yet I have not been able to connect my Great Grandfather to the few Manzke families listed there. Interestingly, the spelling on some of the entries goes back and forth between Manzke and Manske between the different years.

I will happily share any info I have about my Great Grandfather.

Bill Manzke
Dublin, OH (born and raised in Baltimore, MD)
bmanzke@columbus.rr.com

The spelling of the name Manzke / Manske / Manski varies back and forth a lot in historical records. This is partly cause by the political borders shifting around so much over time.

Sadly, I dont have any other information for you on your family. I just found it interisting that your grandmother and my daughter share the same name. My daughter is Helena Manzke.

Best regards,

Bill Manzke
Dublin, OH, USA

My grandmother was Selma Mansky (she didn't read english so the name was probably originally manski).
She married a Jacob-Joseph. My father and his brother and two sisters were born in Wisconsin and Minnosota. I believe Jacob was a logger. Try looking around sprit falls wisconson. I thought this should show all relatives of the Manski(y's). My grandmother was born in 1889 so her husband around there and he could have had brothers and sisters in the area.

My grandmother was Catholic. Her husband was German because my father only spoke german and polish when he was 5 and he was raised Catholic.
