Probably most people have changed email addresses since 1999, but I just found your post. My grandmother was Latifi Monsour, married to Hannah Kenaan, and came to USA via Brazil, Canada, and Cleveland, where they had relatives, maybe your family. They settled in Meridian, MS. She was a beautiful person, and I'd love to know more about her family. Family legend is that her brother, Arthur, starved in a cave back in Lebanon with her younger sisters when he went back to try to get them out during WWI. Do you know anything about this? (I named my son for him.)

To: Mike Mansour - Many more "mansours" now then when I grew up in Detroit. My fathers family left Minnesota about 95 years ago and had two chidren at the time, my father and his oldest sister. Prior the brothers (my gpa and uncles) were in PA. After MN they settled in Michigan on a small farm near the thumb. Gpa was killed (auto-accident) in 1921. Dad and bro/sisters raised family with gma and ended up in detroit. In the 70's my Dad signed over the land deed for many hundreds of acres (farmland) in Lebanon, to his cousins. Gma died in 1966-67. She was about 85/yrs. So born around 1881 in Beirut, Lebanon.

I have sometimes seen the name Charles as Shaheen. If you are looking for the surname Shahadey, you might look at Terre Haute, Vigo Co, IN censuses and also Cairo, Alexander Co, IL. These Shahadeys were mostly from or descended from Syria southwest of Damascus. Since my post here a few years ago I learned that the Mansour mentioned was actually his first name, with last being Farah. My focus then changed to the surname Farah. Sorry I am not more help to you.

That is correct. It's quite common in middle east for Christians to tattoos crosses on the upper side of their thumb or inside of their wrists.

To identify themselves as Christians (vs Muslim).

Not sure of the historical significance, ie; if they were forced to, but some modern Christians still choose to do this.

Mansors from Lebanon and Ohio

I'm researching my wife's family. Khalil Mansor/Mansour (I've seen both spellings on documents) came to Ohio in the early 1900s. His family mostly lived in Westernport, MD, and Zanesville, OH. Khalil married Freda Saba - the Sabas also came to Ohio from Lebanon in the early 1900s. Please note that Lebanon is often listed as "Syria" on documents in the 1900s. Freda's parents were Albert Saba and Chaheeny "Anna" Sarkis. In Lebanon, the Mansors may have been related to the Obeids.

If you have any info, please email me at graham.peace@mail.wvu.edu

Thanks! :)
I am not sure if I am related. My great Grandfather was Samuel Joseph Baseel from Lebanon DOD 04-18-1926. He was married to Annie Campbell-Baseel and had 4 children, Samuel, Leo, Frank, and Anna. Annie died in Washinton State while having twins. I will be visiting with my Father on July 4th this year and will get more information. Anna and her brothers all died in either Washington or Oregon.

I am interested as well in locating information on my great grandfather Michael John Mansour from Beirut Lebanon. My nephew is Michael John Monsour V. There has been four generations since his arrival into America, and his name has been carried on for five generations. Apparently, the name Mansour was misspelled with my grand father or father as their names are also Michael John Mansour but my dads 4 children spell our names Monsour. Either way. I know that the great grand father came from lebanon and married Sadie Sykes. He wore some kind of diamond stick pin and was nicked named "Diamond John". He was a gambler and peddler.. He came to Franklin LA. in St. Mary parish. My dad also told me that he had a brother who lived in South America and owned a coffee plantation. He also said something about they had tatoos around their thumbs for identification???? This is all I know about my great grandfather. I'm not even sure that this is the same person that you are interested in. If so and you are releated please write back and let me know what you know.
Thanks Marilyn

Gina left Chicago after parent died in August 19880. Anyone knowing whereabouts , please contact me via email. With the current events in the middle east, I have often wondered how my friend faired in life.
Re: Mike Mansour

My grandmother, Latifi Monsour, came from Lebanon. She and my grandfather, 'John Ellis', first went to Brazil where her uncle had some sort of business. Could this be your ancestor's brother? And, might your ancestor be my grandmother's uncle? I've heard that there was an 'Uncle Mike Monsour' in Texas. My grandparents lived in Meridian, Vicksburg, and Natchez, Mississippi. I think my grandmother's father was named 'Buttros or Peter' Monsour.

Monsour

Marilyn, My father came back to America about 1910 from Syria. He had a friend or relative with him with the surname Monsour. My father was born in 1896 and lived near Damascus. He spoke of having a tattoo on his hand (it was near his thumb) as he was Syrian Orthodox Christian. There is some reference to that in one of the message boards I read awhile back regarding tattoos. It isn't much but I hope it helps. You might check your surname in the census reports from the 1910 Miracode index from Ohio as a lot of Syrians were there at the time and that is where my father was then. Cairo, Alexander Co, IL would be another around 1920.
