I am trying to locate the descendants of Jefferson Mantz born about 1872 in Virginia and Lula or Luna (Berry) Mantz born about 1878 in Virginia. They were married on April 24, 1893 in Washington County, Virginia. They were living in the Cleveland, Ohio vicinity in 1930. Lula was the owner/operator of Federal Antiques in Cleveland.

URGENT Re: Henry Mantz b. 1847 Germany --> WI --> MI.

My father, Ernest Mantz, is leaving for Germany next week, June 11, 2008. I am urgently trying to find out any information I can about our family before he leaves. The Henry Mantz profiled in this message was my dad's grandfather's brother. Does anyone know the name of the town in Germany where they came from? Also, I am very new to family tree building. How does one go about viewing records from Germany? Are they in German? Ancestry.com says it's possible to view records from all over the world, but I have not been able to find anything except US records. Any help anyone can provide would be appreciated very much. Time is so short, and I really want to give my dad some information for his trip, so he can visit the towns of our ancestors. Thank you. Mary Mantz (feel free to write to me at marymantz@tx.rr.com.)

Mary "Polly" Mantze b. about 1790

Is anyone doing research on Mary Mantze born about 1790, who married Philip STIEFER/STEIFER born about 1780 from South Carolina. Mary died before 1835 in Abbeville District, S.C. Their son, Philip H. Stiefer, II born about 1815 is the ancestor whose line I am tracing. He was in Smith County, Texas in 1860 and possibly died before 1870.

The little information I have comes from Joe Lewis, via the internet. He quoted from the book about Hart County, Georgia;
"The Hart of Georgia, A History of Hart County, Georgia."

I would really like to know if the Stiefer/ Mantze families were German or Dutch. My husbands grandfather said his grandmother, Eliza J. Stiefer was Black Dutch. She was a daughter of Philip H. Stiefer II and Elizabeth, both from S.C.
Eliza J. Stiefer married Thomas David Powell in Smith County, Texas 28 August 1856. From her application for a pension, from Thomas D. Powell's Civil War service, she stated that her family had come to Texas in 1851.

Thank you, Joy

Sorry, I can't help you but I don't think that they are related to
the Mantzs who came to Iowa from Pennsyvlania about 1853.
Of course, that is only one family...the children of Henry Mantz, Jr. and there were many other Mantzs from Pa.
I suggest that they may be in the Pa. records as descendants
of either John, Daniel, or other Mantz surnames. Try all the
Mantzs and also look for Mantzs that came to America later.
Good luck on your hunting.

Sandi, I'm sorry that I didn't see your message until today. I don't have any other information on Fianna than what I gave. She isn't part of my direct line. The discrepancy between Joseph and Joshua could be a mistake on the part whoever printed the article I took the info from or maybe he carried both names, one as a first and the other as a second. My own dad went by his first name, his second and his nickname. Makes is confusing of course. Good luck!

Hello Mantz Relatives! My Great grandfather was Medart John Mantz. He came here from Germany in the mid 1800's. He and his wife Josephine Geist settled in Olmitz, Kansas. My grandmother was Matilda Mantz, one of Medarts daughters.They had 14 children one was William Christopher Mantz. I don't know if this is the William that lived in Enid, that is where I live, but there are several Mantzes that live in Alva Ok. and in the surrounding area. I have just started looking for my Mantz relatives and this message board is the first thing I have found on them. I have information on Medart and his children that I will gladly share with anyone interested. We have a combined Rhodes-Mantz reunion every year usually in August or September. We know Medart came to America from Germany and wound up in Kansas with alot of other Germans. We think he had two brothers and they split up when they arrived in America. We know nothing about his brothers. Maybe one of the Mantzes from back east? If you have any info on Medart or his brothers or other family I would like to see it if you dont mind.

I have just located a marriage certificate for a distant cousin who married Augustus W. SIMONSON, son of Stephan SIMONSON and Elisabeth MANTZ. Augustus married Edna R. LOGAN, daughter of John LOGAN and Mary WALL, 26 May 1907 in Brooklyn, Kings, New York. Witnesses to the marriage were Anna SIMONSON and John G. FITZSIMMONS.
The ceremony was conducted by Rev. F. I. FLATH, a minister at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church. The wedding took place at 485 Glenmore Avenue. I know the names of 7 children born to Augustus and Edna but I have not located any of their descendants. Augustus died sometime after 1930. Edna died in 1973.

Henry Mantz b. 1847 Germany --> WI --> MI.

Henry Mantz
Perseverance and hard work always win, and these have won for Mr. Mantz his present position and built his pleasant home. He was born in Germany in 1847, and moved to Milwaukee with his parents in 1856. He worked on a farm until twenty years of age, when he “struck out” for himself, coming to Michigan and beginning work in the woods near Manistee. He spent several years working for Ingham and for McCormack on the Manistee river, where he learned thoroughly the lumber business.
For six years he was in partnership with R. Hanson, cutting pine, or “jobbing it,” the firm being known as Mantz & Co. This firm was dissolved and one formed with his brother, wm. Mantz, with whom he was associated for four years. In all his lumbering operations, Mr. Mantz was very successful. It was these operations and the money earned from them that made him a member of the Michelson & Hanson Lumber Co. upon its organization.
Mr. Mantz was one of the pioneers of Lewiston, being one of the first to move his family here. He has been supervisor of Albert township for two terms, and president of the Lewiston board of education for two terms. His business ability enabled him to fill these offices with success. Mr. Mantz is at present general manager of the Lewiston & Southeastern R.R., owned by the Michelson & Hanson Lumber Co., and general manager of the woods department of the same firm.

this is an exerpt from the Lewiston Journal, apr 28, 1898. there is also photographs with this article.

Albert's father worked at the Bollinger Mill in Burfordsville (west of Cape Girardeau), probably in the late 1800s and/or early 1900s. They are related to a Emil Mantz, who had a store in Tilsit, MO.

If anyone has information on Albert's family and ancestors, my husband and I would appreciate the help. Thanks!
