Tipperary Mara Family

My great great grandmother was Mary Mara married to James Kennedy of Coorevin, Borrisokane, Tipperary, Ireland. This much I know: James and Mary had several children between 1834 and 1857 including my my great grandfather Bartholomew born in 1856. I have baptism info on all of the children, but my question relates to the Mara family and how Mary fits in to that. Does anyone have info on the Mara's of Tipperary?
Thanks!
Cathy

I am related through marriage to the Mara's. Timothy's uncle Michael was married to my gg grandmother Bridget Healy Hurley. First husband died in the Civil War, Michael her second husband was also in the War. He arrived in Worcester before John Timothy's father. I would love to compare notes. Helen

I hope this finds you as it has been a long time. I am connected through marriage to your Timothy's uncle. Michael Mara brother of John (Timothy's father). Michael was the second husband of my gg grandmother. I am currently researching this family in Worcester. I'm trying to find where my gg Bridget Healy came from. I suspected Killorglin, which is not far from Caherciveen. I have found out a fair amount about Mara's in this quest.I would love to compare notes. Thanks,Helen

Amanda,
Thank you for your reply. I have found the family these things belong to and I have already sent them. You said you just started your research, let me give you a little tip about this hobby.....don't give out info on "living" relatives without knowing just who your talking to. If you need some guiedence, let me know. I'll help. I will tell you this, I was just starting to search my ancestry so I googled the name but mistakingly misspelled it. Lo and behold there was the sister to my g-grandmother right there in front of me. I would never have found her other wise! Also, search images...I found the brother of my grandmother that way. Good luck.
Joyce

Re: Eugene Mara - California and Nevada

I am not related to the family but am doing some research on them and other relatives. Here is what I have found so far. It gets a little complicated by the names changes.

Eugene Mara born October 1843 [per 1900 Nevada census} in Missouril.

He married Eva Stewart in 1867 in Carson City, Nevada.
[Her father was Wellington Stewart, a Lawyer, and her mother was Sarah.]

Eugene and Eva had two children. [newspaper acounts show other babies born but died so I am listing only living children]
Lena/Helen M. born April 1878 [1900 Nevada Census. Theron G. Mara born 2 December 1879 in Nevada. He was named after his grandfather [Theron B. Winston] but used the name "Tump" and the California death index lists him as such.
Reno Evening Gazette newspaper 1921 October 20
Theron Winston Mara, whom his friends know betters as "Tump" arrived from Sacramento last Saturday to spend his vacation with his mother, Mrs. Eva Stewart Mara, and his sister, Mrs. W.P. Epstine.

The newspapers mention that in 1902 he was connected with the Carson City, Nevada prison before going to Sacramento.

Lena/Helena Mara married William Paul Epstine.

Reno Evening Gazette 1919 March 17 page 2
Carson City, Mar. 17. The death of Eugene Mara, while not unexpected, came after all as a shock to his family and friends. In spite of his threescore years and ten he was a young man in appearance and thoughts and no one ever dreamed of classing him as an elderly man. Full of humor and dry wit he was always sought by younger people and this helped to keep him young. In 1917, he and his wife celebrated their golden wedding. Besides his widow, a daughter, Mrs. W. P. Epstine and a son, Theron Winston Mara, survive him.

Reno Evening Gazette 1922 August 17 page 5
Carson, Aug 17.Funeral Servies for Mrs. Eva Mara, who died at her home here last night after a residence since 1859, will be held tomorrow and the remains will be shipped to Oakland, Cal., for cremation. As Eva Stewart, Mrs. Mara was one the first white girls to arrive in Carson. A daughter, Mrs. Willam Epstine; a son Tump Mara, and two sisters, Mrs. Glick and Mrs. Bryant, of San Diego, Surving. All were with her when death came.
{it is noted in other articles that Eva Stewart was once the sweetheart of Samuel L. Clemens {Mark Twain} but didn't like his antics and married Eugene Mara.

Reno Evening Gazette 1922 August 15 page 5
Mrs. Eva Stewart Mara, one of the first three young ladies in Carson City and a person friend of Mark Twain, lies at the point of death at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W.P. Epstine. Her son and his wife, her sisters and her daughter are with her constantly.

You can find the Mara family in the Nevada Census records.
1870 in Carson City, Nevada. Eugene 26, a plasterer and Eva 24 keeping house.

1880 has them in Nevada Carson City. Eugene is 36, Eva is 34 and Lena is age 2 and Theron is age 6 months.

1900 Carson City, Nevada. Eugene is 56 born Oct 1843, Eva L is 54 born Sept 1845 and Helen M 22/single born April 1879

1910 Carson City Nevada. Eugne is listed in error as 55 and wife is listed as Lucy E age 63 along with Tump W. 30 and single. Tump is a gas maker at the gas works.

Here is how the name "Theron Winston" came to be.
Theron B. Winston married Mary Ellen Stewart Curry Winston. They had three children. Laura E. Winston [about 1868], Theron G. [born about 1872 in Nevada] and a son named Sharon M. born March 1874.

Mary Ellen was first married to Curry and widowed then married Winston.

Eva [Evelyn] was the sister to Mary Ellen Stewart Curry Winston.

Here is the history of the name: Theron B, the father and Theron G. Winston, his son. Then came along her sister Eva Stewart Mara and named her son Theron Winston Mara.
I know it sounds a little confusing but that is what I have found in the newspapers and census records. I am a docent at the Nevada Historical Society and do historical research for them.

You can view Nevada census records from 1860 to 1920 by going to their website: www.nevadaculture.org some of the names are slight misspelled though.

Hope this helps, Regards, Arline in Nevada

Mary & James Mara's Reward of Merit 1872

I have come across some (what I think are) important papers that need to be in the hands of "the family" from which they came. I have one "Reward of Merit" for James Mara that is dated Dec 31, 1872. I also have five for Mary Mara dated for 1872 and 1873. They had the same teacher....R. Allison. Of this family I know that Mary (Mollie) Mara married Harry Keevil. They had a son (Mara Thomas Keevil) who made their lives in Syracuse, Missouri. If you are from this family, please contact me. These papers need to be in your hands, not mine. Just a note....within all these papers are quite a few (tons actually) of letters back and forth not just with family but with boyfriend/later husband in WW2. Too much "family" information gets lost this way! There is also a DAR application that has loads of info on it. Thanks for your time.....and in return....if anyone out there runs across parents of Pauline Dahlke (b. 1852 Germany) who married William Wolf (who changed his name to Welke upon immigration in 1877) PLEASE BY ALL MEANS LET ME KNOW!!!

Ok you are alittle farther back than I am,and I don't see an anne ,annie or anna as children of your ancestor.I have a lady Anna O'mara that married a John McNamara, john was born in canada,I think montreal in about 1845.Anna was born about 1852 in the Tipperary area.Anna O'Mara and John McNamara were married and in Wisconsin by 1874 as that is when my grandmother,Sarah was born.I think the O was added to the name in the usa.But sometimes in the records they drop it.sometimes it is o'marrah and O'meara.quite confusing.Good luck.oh also connection in ohio with this surname.Thanks.

I suggest that you write to the Heritage centers in North Riding and South Riding. I wrote to North Riding first and they sent my query and fee on to South Riding (Bru Boro in Cashel)

Each Heritage center has their own fee. I believe I paid something like $75 for the research. All I knew was my great-great grandfather was Michael Mara born in Tipperary and his wife was Mary Nagel from same--this from burial record. THey found their marriage record and Michael's and his siblings baptismal record and his parent's names and marriage. It turns out that Michael was born in a townland abt. a mile from Cashel. I visited in 2003. Here is the website:
http://www.folkston.com/trains/trains.htm

Re: William Mara

Sharon - After a few years of thinking about it, I am now convinced that the 'father', William Mara, noted on my greatgrandmother's death certificate issued at Newburgh, NY, in 1921, was not her father at all, but was the Roman Catholic priest (or 'father') who was present at her death. Her birth name was Mary Jane GAFFNEY (1849-1921), and her father was James Gaffney (1819-1892) , an 1846 immigrant from County Roscommon who married a Mary Dennis (d. 1898) in about 1848. Both are buried in Newburgh, and Mary Jane is buried as Mary Jane Gaffney CAVANAUGH, with her family in New Windsor, NY. Therefore, I believe that the William Mara who apears as a member of the family on the death certitifcate was the result of a clerical entry error. (This would also indicate
that if William were a priest, he would have no 'children.')

Thankyou,Wow did you get pictures of the castles?I haven't been able to study the area at all but that is the name I was given by my aunt which is no longer living.I really get confused working on these two lines.(McNamara/O'mara.)Some of the places she mentioned she was unsure on pronouncing the names correctly, and she was a school teacher ! I do have some marriages/surnames that might connect with you.But they would be on the Paternal line so I don't know if that would help,as they would be cousin, uncles, aunts, etc. Do you have any of that info ? I believe you are back 1 generation more than I,Do you have any pictures of relatives then. I have one of anne/anna O'mara, that was found in a catholic church, maybe the only one in existance.

Forgot to tell you, I have the malloney name also but not possitive of the spelling. This all sounds very familiar to me.There was another story about clomel is that close by ? My grandfather was a well digger, dug wells with a spade 60 feet deep by hand,it was in his obit.maybe if you give me some other info we can connect.I do think you may be a cousin.I know there are alot of John and Anne names for that area, very popular so that makes it hard.Do you by chance have any other surnames besides malloney? How about German.Debi

Indiana.,Anne O'Mara daughter,(Sarah) lived in Nebraska about 1880.I also think there were Ohio connections as I have heard they traveled there often. They didn't stay in Wis. long (after Sarah was born).Debi

My O'Mara Family and McNamara Family were in Canada and Wisconsin so that would be a few good spots to check. My Anne O'Mara was born in 1849,but her gravestone says 1852.She passed away in 1922 in Nebraska.
Your post of names sounds familiar to me.some of the records drop the O' which makes it harder to find things.Debi

After getting the information on marriage, parents and place from the Heritage Center, I went to Ireland two years ago and found the townland where my immigrant Michael Mara was born in 1820. I took a lot of photos of the area and of the "Rock of Cashel" nearby. My information is on Ancestry.com
Anyone who would like to see any photos, let me know.

Karen Klaene
CIncinnati,OH

The elder Eugene Mara was my grandfather and the younger Eugene Mara was/is my Uncle. The elder Eugene Mara had a sister, Lena (Helena) Mara who married William Epstine.
