I can't help you, but wondered if you could let me know if my late ex-husband's father, Jeremy Auret Marais, born approx 1900 is a close decendant of Charles Marais. I gather he was from the Graaf Reinet and married Renee Maartens of the same area. I really would like to put this together for my children and grandchildren.
Thanks
Dawn Field

I managed to trace my ancestors back to CHARLES MARAIS born 3.4.1738 and died 31.7.1782, a farmer on the farm De Rietfontein in the Camdebo in the district of Graaff Reinet.
He was most likely a descendant of the Hugenoot Charles Marais but I have been unable to verify this. Can somebody help? please.

I am fascinated by our family legacy, and would appreciate any correspondence on the subject. I just read the message from George Desmarais regarding Baldwin becoming king during 3rd Crusade. I am interested to know how I might find the source document on that? All I have is the published family tree book (in my mother's possession presently). It records a number of Baldwins, all of whom were noblemen, and a few who were given cities in the Holy Land for their bravery. Was there indeed one who was crowned a King? Is there any evidence to show that Baldwin, brother of Godfrey Debuillion (forgive the spelling), was one of our ancestors? Thanks for any help or updates.

This message is in response to the message posted by Etienne Marais in July 2000. I am interested in tracing my family back to the Huguenot Charles Marais. My birth date is 3 December 1960 and I have a twin brother, Andrew Fergus, and a sister, Maryanne Nichola (born 10 October 1963). All three of us were born in Cape Town. Maryanne is married to Grant McLachlan and has a daughter, Nichola Diana (born in Cape Town, January 1999). My father is Robin Melville Marais (born 15 September 1935 in Port Elizabeth) and my mother Diana Margaret (nee Dean) (born 18 April 1936 in Selukwe, Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). His father was John Francois Marais who was shot down in 1944 over Italy and his mother Lola Dorcas (nee Land). He grew up in the Queenstown area and an uncle of his was a teacher at Queen's College as far as I know.

My e-mail addresses are:

mark@liebstan.co.za
puff@iafrica.com

Just to let you know: "Marais" is also spelled "Maurais" and "Morais". So in your search, be sure and check out all three spellings. I've always thought of the name as a French name but I've heard that way before that it was originally Portugese in origin. I hope that knowing about all these spellings will help you. Good luck.

Dear Georges

I find the information you posted very interesting, could you give some details regarding the book(s) you mention ?

It would only be probable that there should be some kind of link between the surnames. A lot of genealogical information was lost during the wars of religion but who knows...

Regarding the South African surname Marais, there are 7000+ families in South Africa with this surname with a common ancestor, Charles Marais from Le Plessis-Marles close to Paris (today Plessismornay). The variations you mention are not known South African surnames.

Regards
Etienne Marais

Lizette,

I assume that the Marais side of your family is from South Africa (after France originally). If so I have found that the Huguenot Museum in South africa is very helpful. If you can provide them with details of your grandparents they may be able to trace your family back to the original Charles Marais that migrated to South Africa in 1688. You can find a link to the museum on my Marais website, www.mmarais.freeserve.co.uk. I would be very interested in any information you have or get to add to the Marais website. Although I have not had time to update it recently I hope to be able to start again towards the end of the year.

Regards,

Martin.

Dear Georges,
I have no official information, but according to my family crest the Marais originated from the area Marais near Paris. As you are probably aware, Desmarais must mean "of the Marais", so I am pretty much convinced they are from the same family group.

I am familiar with Etienne Marais ( S/A 1688) but am also interested in finding out about the French Marais family before him.

Let me know what information you need from me.

Marais specific family tree (SA).

I'm setting up a family tree dedicated to the
research of the descendants of Charles Marais (who arrived in South Africa in 1688) with the specific intention of expanding the tree in a 'top-down' fashion (and thus focusing on the older generations, creating a framework for a possible future 'definitive' source of research).

If anybody would like to participate, please
contact me at the following email address:

etienne_marais@hotmail.com

Marais family

just a few notes for you guys.

there is also a 'David Desmarest' from Southern France, who was also an Huguenot, who settled in the New York, New Jersey areas of the United States after a brief stay in England at just about the same time (late 1600s). His descendants have written several volumes on the family branch.
His ancestors can be traced back to the early 1100s - and one of them (Baldwin Desmarets) became king of Jerusalem during the Third Crusade. The research goes into an analysis of where and how often the name appears and its variations (Marest, Marets, Marais, + De or Des). The book indicates that David, the immigrant to the United States had Catholic relatives living in Paris.

My family is descended from a Jacques Marais whose son Paul migrated to the Montreal area of Canada again in the 1660s.

I've done some research in Paris - but haven't found anything specific to my family.

'Desmarais' is how the French Canadians have standardized the name during the late 19th century.

I've often wondered if the South African Marais, Desmarais, and Desmarest families were related.

If anyone ever finds ties, let me know.

thanks

Jack Marais

I have established that my paternal grandfather John Francois Marais was commonly known as "Jack" Marais. He was born in 1910 and died on 1 April 1941 while serving as a Lieutenant in the 1st Squadron of the SAAF during WWII. His father was Jacob and his mother Nellie Marais and they may have lived in Queenstown. Jack may also have had a brother, Douglas. If you know of any information about these relatives please contact me at the following e-mail addresses:

puff@iafrica.com
mark@liebstan.co.za

With thanks
Mark John Marais
