Re: Fred Vinson connection to the Marcum family

Hi, Kris -

Just saw your query. My uncles, Fred and Jimmy Wright, talked of the Marcum-Vinson reunions at Camden Park. We are related in some way. (I have seen from others' posts - here and on other Marcum forums - that Marcums and Vinsons intermarried several times.)

I know of two connectioins: James Overton Marcum (Fred D. Marcum's brother) married Rebecca Vinson ("Aunt Bec"). My mother has told me that Fred Vinson was Uncle Will O'Neal's(married to Fred and James O.'s sister, Belle Marcum) law partner in Catlettsburg, KY, before Fred went to Washington. I don't know whether Fred Vinson and Rebecca Vinson Marcum were closely related. I'll have to dig deeper there.

Carol

Hi Danielle, from what little I do know about the Marcum's I have found that they come from England, and were tax collectors for the crown. They were in the North of England, along the Scottish borders, where (oddly enough) members of my family were Border Reivers (they stole cattle and such from the richer English families, the Marcum's were one such family.)
Hope this helps,
Rachel

Hi Diana - I was just trawling through the various postings when I came across yours regarding missing teeth. My mother was a Markham and my sister and I both had four teeth where there were baby teeth but not permanent teeth. We were told we were just millions of years ahead in evolution!! The really strange thing is that the Markham's in my family all come from the Brigg area of Lincolnshire, UK so if there is a "missing teeth" gene it obviously goes back a very very long way.
Helen

I am trying to find information on James E. Marcum, born 15 Jan. 1852 Laurel Co., KY. He was a brother to my Great-grandpa Bishop Asbury Marcum. Their parents were Jesse Marcum and Sarah W. Ely. Other than his birth date, I can find nothing further on him.

There is a James E. Marcum listed in the 1880 census as living in Blackfoot City, Deer Lodge County, MT but since I can't retrieve the info, have no idea if this is the same man.

If you have any info on James, I would appreciate hearing from you.
Fred Vinson connection to the Marcum family

I am interested in the Marcum connection with Frederick Moore Vinson (January 22, 1890 – September 8, 1953) of Louisa Kentucky, 13th Chief Justice of the United States.
My mother's childhood memory is of his attending "all the Marcum reunions at Camden Park." (Camden Park, Huntington West Virginia ) He liked to talk, we children could not wait until he was ready to give out the tickets. Every year he gave out tickets for the rides according to our heights. Each year we knew we would get more tickets from growing taller from the precious year.

Any one else have this memory? Any known connection Fred Vinson has to the Marcum's?

Re: Josiah Marcum & McDonald Family--> EXTREMELY interesting!

Just wondering if anyone ever heard of this before. It goes against what I've ever read about Josiah but if it's true, is an amazing piece to the puzzle!

This comes from an interview done with Ida Belle Marcum, "Mountaineer of the Month" in the "The Mountail Call" March 1974.

"Could you tell us of the interesting early history of you [sic] McDonald-Marcum clan?
Josiah McDonald came from Ireland and I gather he came alone when 14 years old and he boarded with this old family named Marcum and he wanted to join the Revolutionary War and wasn't old enough, so by taking the old man Marcum's name and having him sign for him, he could join as a drummer boy. This took place in what was then called Brooks Garden, Virginia.

I've heard tell that on the voyage over from Ireland, an early Marcum made a bow and arrow to shoot the rats on the ship and sold them for 40 cents apiece. Have you heard this?

{Laughter} Never heard nothing about that one. Probably another branch. There's more of them than there is white people.

Tell me about the different Marcum families.
The old Marcum that the McDonald-Marcum took the name from, now they was known as the Bullet-Head Marcums. Now this Kelley Marcum at Kermit, he is one of the old Bullet-Head Marcums. There's five or six groups of them; one of them's the Quill-Back Marcums {laughter}, the Bullet-Heads, the Big-Nose Marcums {More laughter}, the Lick-Skillet Marcums, the Witchy-Wylie Marcums. That's all I know. And we're the Big-Noses. {Laughter all around}"

Would love to figure it out someday. My ggg grandfather was Green Berry Marcum b. 1795 in NC, he lived most of his life in Hawkins COunty, TN and died in 1882 in Scott County, VA.
I can't figure out who is parents were.

Hi,

I am looking for information on Bethany Marcum who married James Riley Herald, Sr. I am a direct descendant from their son James Riley Herald, Jr. who married Melinda Damron. I'm doing a family history book for my family for Christmas presents and am trying to find out as much as I can. Right now I'm trying to find out all the direct descedants that participated in the civil war but any info on this part of the family would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Looking for information on a Nevada Margaret Marcum. She was born October 28, 1876 in Missouri and died April 3, 1951 in Missouri. Says that her father was Mark Markham Mother unknown. What I could tell on the Census is that she was married to Eldridge Bridges first and then married Sam Baldwin. Death Certificate is showing on the
Missouri State Website under Nevada Baldwin. I thought I found her but father Was Henry Marcum (1826 TN) and wife Margaret (1840). Mother was born in Ireland. She also had a sister named Jennie. If anyone has Any info on the above, it would really help my brick wall.
