Do you have any information, pictures etc that you would be willing to share with her. Her great grandfather was Thomas Jesse Maret(1857-1942) son of Stephen Benjamin Maret.
Thank you.
Mary Elizabeth

Re: Stephen Maret m. Margaret (Peggy) Brown

In all references to Stephen Maret, I am using the spelling Maret - only because that is the way my great grandmother and at least one brother spelled the name. Family lore is that they changed the spelling of the name so it would be similar to the original French spelling. As mentioned in your posting, the family name is spelled about 4 or 5 different ways and I don't think anyone really knows which is correct.

The only possible information that I have found about Stephen's parents is the following:

"The parents of Stephen Merrit, b. c. 1751, as Stephen Merrit, Sr. and Grace."

However, after over 15 years of research on Stephen Maret and his family, I not only have found no evidence to support this statement, or have even been able to find out the name of the person who made the above claim!

There is another claim that Stephen Maret (b. c 1751) had two brothers, Joseph and Mitchell. A Stephen and Joseph Merritt signed the petition for the division of Madison County in 1785, and perhaps that Joseph is Stephen's brother. Another claim is that Mitchell Merrit, the brother of Stephen Merrit (b. about 1751) lived near Kirksville, Madison Co., KY and later moving to Missouri with his family. Again, I have never been able to find any proof of these claims.

I did find the following information in North Carolina records regarding the estate of Stephen Marit/Maritt which is rather interesting as it mentions Grace Marrit/Marritt - perhaps the mother of our Stephen Maret, as claimed above. These records also include reference to someone named Scarlet or Scarlett. This name is also interesting because John (Jacky) Maret, the oldest son of Stephen Maret and Margaret Brown, named his oldest son George Scarlett Maret. If the Stephen Marit who is mentioned below died sometime prior to 1766, there might be a possibility that this Stephen Marit might be the father of Stephen Maret b. about 1751.

Abstracts of the Minutes of the Court of Pleas & Quarterly Sessions of Orange Co., North Carolina, Sept. 1752-Aug 1766 (NC 929.3S555A6)
459 (pg. 140) (Court of Aug. 1766) - Benjamin Marit an orphan son of Stephen Marit, dec'd chose James Scarlet (and Grace Marritt) as his Guardian.
445 (pg 135) (Court of May 1766) -- Grace Maritt & James Scarlett granted letters of administratioon on the estate of Stephen Maritt, dec'd. Bond 250 pounds. Bondsmen: Stephen Scarlett, John Johnston.
459 (pg 140) (Court of Aug 1766) - Benjamin MARIT an orphan son of Stephen MARIT, dec'd chose James Scarlet as his guardian.

I have never attempted to get copies of the records mentioned above.

Margaret (Peggy) Brown was the daughter of John Brown and his wife, Margaret (possible maiden name, Preston). John and Margaret Brown moved to Kentucky about the same time as Stephen Maret and his wife, Margaret (Peggy) Brown. John Brown died about 1807 and his daughter, Margaret Marett, was mentioned in his will. Stephen Maret filed a lawsuit about 1809 claiming John Brown wasn't competent when he made his will.

Maybe some of this information will provide enough hints for someone researching the Maret family to be able to find Stephen's parents. If so, please share the information with all the rest of the Maret descendants.

Beverley Masoner Shackelford
great granddaughter of Martha Margaret Maret Ketaon, daughter of Mitchell Maret and Glatha Smith.

We have gotten back to Stephen Maret and Margaret (Peggy) Brown, but can get back no further.
George S Maret 1860 census Garrard Co Kentucky Lancaster

Hello,

I am interested in the George S Maret (shown as G. S. in the 1860 Kentucky, Garrard Co, Lancaster P O Census). George S was born in Kentucky in 1812 and married Eliza ?? born in Kentucky in 1820.

They had many children, but I am following their son George who married Amelia ?? and eventually moved to Chicago, Cook County, Illinois by 1880.

George Jr and Amelia had 6 children (or possibly 5 and one adoption) and were in Kansas City by 1900. Their son Frank eventually moved to Seattle and settled in the Richmond Beach area where I live. I am researching a local resident of the area who was born in 1918 and Frank Maret is her father.

If you have any information on this family I would love to pass it on to Francine here in Richmond Beach. If there are any Garrard County books which mention this family I would love to buy one for her as well.

Thank you very much in advance!!

Tracy in Edmonds, WA

Additionally one of the daughters is named Glatha Maret. Granville Maret (of Rockcastle Co., KY) was the son of Mitchell Maret and Glatha Smith.
It is possible that your John K. Maret is the son of Granville L. Maret (b. 13 Dec 1882 in Garrard Co., KY, d. 10 Feb 1872 in Rockcastle Co.) and Elizabeth Bowman (b. c. 1841 in KY). Granville & Elizabeth were married 21 Jul 1861 in Whitley Co., KY. Granville was the son of Mitchell Maret/Merrit and Glatha Ann (Glathy) Smith. Mitchell was born in Garrard Co., KY but moved to Rockcastle Co. after his marriage to Glatha Ann. I believe that Mitchell's family was the only Maret family in Rockcastle Co.

Granville's widow, Elizabeth, and her family are listed in the 1880 census in Rockcastle Co., KY:
1880 U. S. Census and National Index
District 94, Rockcastle Co., Kentucky T9-0440 page 345A
Elizabeth Marett self F Wid W 38 KY
John K. son M S W 19 KY
Glathy dau F S W 15 KY
Sarah J. dau F S W 12 KY

Kentucky Marriages, 1851-1900 lists the following marriages:
J. K. Maret to Rebecca Harper 30 Dec 1881 in Rockcastle Co., KY.
John K. Maret to Flora Yonce 23 Dec 1886 in Rockcastle Co., KY;

The following is listed in the Kentucky Death Index and may be John K. Maret, son of Granville Maret and Elizabeth Bowman, although the age doesn't appear to agree with the age shown in the 1880 US Census & National Index:
John K. Maret, died 7 June 1935 at age 80 in Rockcastle Co.; residence Rockcastle Co. (Volume 37 certificate 18359)

If you think your John K. Maret might be the son of Granville Maret, please contact me by email.

Re Mary Ann Marett . The only concrete information I have is that she lived in Aquilla road St Helliers Jersey in December 1901 when my father was born.
There was a Mary Ann Marett living in Aquilla Rd at the time of the 1891 cencus, she was aged 6 at that time
At the time of my fathers birth Mary Ann Marett I think was unmarried, as there is no father listed on his birth certificate.
I have some information that there was a Peter Marett and his wife Ann, nee Le Maistre living at 41 Aquilla road in 1891, his occupation was a plasterer , but the cencus says they lived there alone.
Wether they are my maternal grand parents, I do not know.
Kerrie, thank you for your information. Best wishes on your search. Trevor

In researching my husbands family tree I have heard several stories of a brother marrying a native American and being shunned by the rest of the family how true that is I don't know, it was said that they were of French English descent and that one of them married an Indian, I am taking a trip to the source of this story next week so I may have more info on that anything you have would be of great interest to me also, good luck and if I come up with anything I will let you know
Kerrie

My father's name is John Maret. I think his grandfather's name may have been John Maret, but his grandmother's name was Martha. I'm not aware of an Emma. The name Claude Hubert sounds familiar. I will ask my father about the names Claude and Emma. My father was born and raised in western Nebraska and I believe 1 or 2 generations back from him folks came from Missouri. My aunt in Nebraska may know something about Claude and Emma.

I am researching my husbands family and have unearthed a few marriages we didn't know about the dates don't quite match up but the name does so I thought I would give it a go.

The Mary Ann Maret I am looking for was mentioned in her Grandfathers will dated 3rd Jan 1853 she was also named in the 1850 census with her father Granville L Maret and they say she was a year old no mother was listed at that time I also have a marriage listed for Mary Gatliff and Granville L Merritt this spelling was also used in the will of 1853, I know that Granville later married again in 1861 to Elizabeth Bowman I have only one child listed for them and that was Jack K Maret.

I don't know if any of these names ring a bell with you or your research but if they do please feel free to contact me and we can share more info Good luck Kerrie

I replied to your earlier query about Blaine Maret being adopted then I took a trip to Somerset Ky to dig through many of their files and what do you know I found some rather interesting facts,

William Blaine Maret was the son of Jack K. Maret and Rebecca E. Harper Jack must have died abt 1885/6 because Rebecca remarried in 1887 Blaine went to live with his uncle Joseph Harper {his mothers brother} So the confusion.

I have more info if your interested please feel free to email me at rkjkjs6@aol.com
