Hello Keith Markey!
I am working on updating the book I compiled from 1993... The Descendants of Christian & Elizabeth Ingold Singrey 1746-1993. There is a ton more information out there than there was when I was working on it back in 1970. I am updating and plan to put it on the web page my nephew is working on for me. I know you are from Christian & Elizabeth's 2nd child, Elizabeth & Samuel Markey. I notice you have a photo of the stone for Samuel. Have you been to the old site? The graves have been long ago disturbed... a couple of times and my cousin saw them lying beside the road while delivering Avon. My Dad's cousin Gwen Singrey (Dr. Fred's daughter) and her Husband, Roger Turner, gathered them and set them in a fenced area. I'm afraid the weather has not been to good for the stones.

Sorry, I get long winded... I do not have any better information on Samuel than you already have, sorry. I would like to get what you have for the family, as what I have listed is pretty sparse.

I have a few spare copies my ex-husband found and sent to me. If you would like one, please e-mail me your address and I will get it sent right out. Please e-mail me at:
karen.singrey53@yahoo.com. I assume you still live around Ft. Wayne area. I now live in Blacklick, Ohio a few miles east of Columbus.

My cousin, Teresa Killingsworth had contacted you with my name (Karen Young back then) to trade out information. She is keeping busy being a full time Mon and soldier. She has been to the gulf 3 times. She told her mom, Ruth, at the last family reunion in front of all the relatives... a real shock for Aunt Ruth. Sorry, rambling on again... So please do contact me.

Thanks, Karen Singrey

Hi Paul, my Grandfather came to America in late 1800's from England. his name was Charles Henry Markey. I don't know if there are any Irish descendants or not. I spent several years researching my Forrest line and have very little done on the Markey, Woodworth line. Thanks for the response! Corinne

Thomas Markey, Jr. appears with his parents in 1880 Federal Cenus(SEARCH: Tohmmas Markey), living in Concord. In 1900 (see census) he was living in Sullivan (village in Town of Sullivan, just south of Concord), where he had a meat market (see Wright's Watertown Directory 1900-1; he was still in Sullivan in 1905. By 1910 he was in Johnson Creek (west of Concord);in 1920 he was in Town of Farmington (just west of Concord)and still there in 1930 but his wife had died.

George was probably George Thomas Markey, b. in Concord in 1889, who registered for the draft in 1917 (living in Fort Atkinson at this time). All these places are in Jefferson County, Wisconsin. Markey family in Concord by 1850 Federal Census [appearing as "Markel"]. Please share with me any info you have about the Besser family.

My great-grandfather was Terence McCabe who married Catherine Markey abt. 1875. Terenced died before 1901 and Catherine died abt. 1924. They lived in the Corlealackagh, Castleblayney, Monaghan area. I know quite a bit about their McCabe descendants (nearly all of whom emigrated to the U.S., settling in the Philadephia area) but virtually nothing about the Markey branch. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for the Meath explanation. I had heard a similar explanation for the pronunciation but it still doesn't explain where they lived since there are a few similar sounding places to Enniskean.

By 1865 all of my immediate relatives were already here in the US in the Brooklyn, NY area but who knows we may be related still, just further back in our past. It seems as though they were always using the same family names which makes searching that much harder.

All the best in your searching.
Pat

I believe that Meath in Gaelic would be pronounced by a Gaelic speaker as if it were spelled Meat. The final t is not as hard as in English and might easily be understood by an English speaker as Mead.

My g-g- grandmother was Ann, or Nancy, Markey and married Hugh McCabe in Ireland. The immigrated with their oldest daughter but I can find no ship record or immigration record. They settled in Schagticoke, New York and later lived in Troy, NY.

I have both a Julia (my great-great-great-grandmother) and several Juliette's (a "great" Aunt and some "great" Cousins who are several times removed) I'm cut & pasting my family tree for the Markey line below. It has several of the names that you are looking for as well. The only difference is that we're from the New York City area. Perhaps one of the Juliette Markey family members moved and changed to calling herself Julia" since Juliette was a bit old fashioned.

I hope this helps you find something more about your family.

Pat Wilson-Perkins

MARKEY GENEALOGY
1) FRANCIS MARKEY, (G-G-G-GF) born: 1784, a native of Parish of Ennaskeen, Towns Land of Ervey, County Meade, Ireland, died: 24 Jan 1859, 75 yrs. married
(Correction: Spelling of the names in Ireland: County Meath, Townland of Ervey, Civil Parish of Enniskean; Barony of Lower Kells, Kells Poor Law Union.)
1a)  FANNY MARKEY, (G-G-G-GM) born: 1785, (unknown surname) died: 23 Feb 1859, 74 yrs
(known to have had 5 children, 4 m & 1 f ), only three names known: John, Patrick & Isabella (Bella), unknown male x's 2

2) PATRICK MARKEY, (G-G-GF) b.: 1824, d.: 2 Feb 1888, 64 yrs. Several people suggested that they were probably talking about "Enniskean Civil Parish is in the northernmost part of Meath, on the border with Co. Cavan. Ervey", although there is a slight possibility that it might be in the area near Dunmanway down in County Cork, since there is an Enniskean there as well.

Here's my original message: START OF ORIGINAL MESSAGE:

I have been trying to determine where my GGG-GF was from. My grandmother had saved an old map of from the NY Sunday News, for March 15, 1964, that was titled "Erin's First Families". My grandmother had noted on it:
"Clark's & Corbett's - Grandmother Cannon's family from Tyrone. Michael Cannon from Connaught.
Markey's from County Meade "Towns Land of Ervey"'
I found that the Markey notation she made from the inscription of the gravestone of Francis Markey, who is my Great-great-great grandfather (died 24 January 1859, age 75). The full inscription reads:
SACRED
To The Memory of
FRANCIS MARKEY
A Native Of The Parish of Ennaskeen
Towns Land of Ervey, County Meade
Ireland
Who Departed This Life January
24th, 1859, Aged 75 Years

Also His Beloved Wife
FANNY MARKEY
Who Died February the 23rd, 1859
In The 74th Year of Her Age
---------------------------------
Requiescant in Pace Amen
---------------------------------
Erected By Their Affectionate Sons
P. & J. MARKEY
---------------------------------

I've been able to locate Connaught as a province and Tyrone and Meath as counties but I can't find any reference to Meade or Ervey and I didn't know if anyone knows of any place that might have changed the spelling of it's name. I just don't know where to go to research it. Of course it could also be how the family spelled it after they came over to the US from Ireland. I don't know if my GGG-GF could read or write so perhaps it was how his children understood his pronunciation of the word Meath and whatever town "Ervey" might be.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.  Pat Wilson-Perkins
END OF ORIGINAL MESSAGE:

The following MARKEY family members are buried in the family cemetery plots in Calvary Cemetery, 49-02 Laurel Hill Bullevard, Woodside, NY, 11377; (718-786-8000)
Section 2, Range 9, Plot P, Graves 13/16, which was recorded in the Name of John & Patrick Markey purchased May 16, 1856 and
Section 13, Range --, Plot 144, Graves 13/16, which was recorded in the Name of John E. I will be going to the cemetery in the spring to see if they are listed on the headstones.

Francis & Fanny Markey (our Great-great-great-grandparents) are the parents of Patrick Markey.
Patrick Markey became a US citizen. I have a copy of his naturalization papers. I don't know if Francis & Fanny did.

In a nutshell: The Markey's are from: County Meath, The townland of Ervey, in the Civil Parish of Enniskean in the Barony of Lower Kells, Kells Poor Law Union.

We do not know the church parish that they were from which is where most of the records were probably kept during that time. They were Roman Catholic.

====================================================================================

The Cannon's were Gram's mother's side of the family, (Alice Gertrude Cannon). She was Betsy's and Dad's Grandmother. Betsy and her mother are named after her, well Betsy is Alice Elizabeth.

Although I'm not sure who the "Clark's & Corbett's" were, I presume they were Gram's grandmother Cannon's family names, her grandmothers' parents last names. They were from County Tyrone which is in the Province of Ulster. The County is now part of Northern Ireland. Ulster has nine counties -- six are part of Northern Ireland (now a separate country) and three are in the Republic of Ireland.
I'm not sure who "Michael Cannon" was but he was from Connaught. It's a province. Ireland is divided into four provinces - Ulster, Munster, Leinster and Connaught. Connaught is made up of Counties Mayo, Sligo, Galway, Leitrim and Roscommon. Trying to find more about him will be very difficult because we know so little about him.

Betsy, I know you sent me everything you had about the Cannon's and Markey's but do you remember anything from your conversations with Gram about the Cannon side of the family? I haven't started on that side at all. I should start posting messages on the message board since there were several siblings. Last question; Lucy asked was if Betsy was a McGarry. No, McGarry is on the Wilson line, Annie McGarry married Thomas F. Wilson, Sr. Betsy is related through the Markey's and the Cannon's side.
====================================================================================
The Wilson's and the McGarry's are from Ireland but we don't know where. Dad remembers that one of his aunt's had told him that the family had come from Armagh. Armagh is both a County and a city in Northern Ireland in Ulster province. At the time when our family would have been there it was still Catholic. I just found a page about Armagh that told about a fire in 1922 that caused the loss of most records but they are working to restore the lost records. I'll save the page and also send in my information and see if they have anything.
====================================================================================

I'm not sure where John P. or his parents are interred, I think they are interred in Holy Cross cemetery but I'd have to recheck my records.
1) Francis & Fanny Markey had 5 children, one of whom was Patrick Markey
2) Patrick Markey married Julia Gargan had 12 children, one of whom was Edward Joseph Markey
3) Edward Joseph Markey married Alice Gertrude CANNON had 5 children
4) Mary Angela Markey married Thomas Francis Wilson, Jr. had one son, Thomas F. Markey lives in Blue Hill, Maine
4) Alice Gertrude Markey (died age 56) married John J. Clements had one daughter, Alice Elizabeth (Betsy) Clements McKenna

====================================================================================
The CANNON side

Rose CANNON Maxwell
ALICE G CANNON MARKEY (Dad's & Betsy's Grandmother)
Mary Angela Markey married Thomas Francis Wilson, Jr. had one son, Thomas F. Wilson, III (Dad)
Rose Cecilia Markey died at Age 45 in 1945
Lawrence Aloysius Markey died 1959
Edward Joseph Markey, (died age 60), married Nettie Mae Tracy had one son Edward J. Markey lives in Blue Hill, Maine
Alice Gertrude Markey (56) married John J. Clements had one daughter, Alice Elizabeth (Betsy) Clements McKenna
Francis CANNON
Elizabeth CANNON
Thomas CANNON married Annie and had three children
Rev. Thomas CANNON (Jesuit Priest, served in the Philippines)
Mary CANNON
(died in childbirth, twins survive)
Sister Margaret CANNON (Maryknoll Sister, deceased 2000 or 2001)

====================================================================================

Gram's map from the NY Sunday News, for March 15, 1964, that was titled "Erin's First Families" had noted on it:"Clark's & Corbett's - Grandmother Cannon's family from Tyrone.
Michael Cannon from Connaught.
Markey's from County Meade "Towns Land of Ervey"'
====================================================================================

Betsy is related to the Markey and Cannon side not the McGarry and Wilson side but she likes reading the different stories and being kept in the genealogy loop so I keep sending her the information about both sides of the family. We have only that one 2nd cousin that I met through my research on Dad's side. They live down near Mom and Dad in Florida but didn't seem to want to make any effort to meet them. Even though I've been "talking" to the husband, it's actually the wife who is the relative. His last e-mail to me said that he had sent me pretty much all that he had; that golf was going to take up much of his time and that he wouldn't be doing genealogy over the summer. I think I got the brush off. ;o(

====================================================================================
I hope you enjoyed your trip.

Somehow I missed your posting earlier this summer and I just noticed someone's reply to you.

This is what I have on my Markey's. They came to the US from Ireland but we have no record of their crossing and only one son's, Patrick's, Naturalization Papers on 13 August 1855 in NYC. By that time they had been living in New York for quite some time and the family was doing quite well.

Here is a partial tree:

MARKEY GENEALOGY

1) FRANCIS MARKEY, (GGF) born: 1784, a native of Parish of Ennaskeen, Towns Land of Ervey, County Meade, Ireland, died: 24 Jan 1859, 75 yrs.

(Correction: Spelling of the names in Ireland: County Meath, Townland of Ervey, Civil Parish of Enniskean; Barony of Lower Kells, Kells Poor Law Union.)
married

1a) FANNY MARKEY, (GGM) born: 1785, (unknown surname) died: 23 Feb 1859, 74 yrs; (known to have had 5 children, 4 m & 1 f ), only three names known: John, Patrick & Isabella (Bella), unknown male x's 2

2) PATRICK MARKEY, b.: 1824, d.: 2 Feb 1888, 64 yrs. Naturalized Citizen of the United States dated 13 August 1855 in New York City. 1860 NYC census listed as a "Market Man" with 3 children & in 1870 as a "Produce Dealer". He owned his home valued at $2000 with 7 children at that time married

2a) JULIA GARGAN MARKEY, born: 1832, died: 15 Oct 1893, 61 yrs.; They had 12 children, 6 boys and 6 girls. The 12 Children: George, John, Joseph, EDWARD, Frank, Charles, Mary, Clarabelle (Carrie), Mary Jane, Juliette, Gertrude & Fanny

3)  George MARKEY, married

3a) Ann Marshall had 5 children - George, John, Edward, Walter & Fanny

Let me know if any of these tie into your tree.
Thanks,
Pat Wilson-Perkins

I am THRILLED to finally find someone who might be, could be, possibly might be related to one of my Irish lines. I have been running into so many road blocks with both sides of my father's family (both the Markey's and the Wilson's (and all their branches) have been impossible to locate.

This is wonderful news. I'm sorry that I took so long to reply. Between finishing up my part of our tax report, then my Dad was diagnosed this week with lung cancer and it's been a very long and difficult week.

I'm looking forward to talking with you about our ancestors.

Pat Wilson-Perkins

I do have a John (not a direct line to me; he's a great-great-uncle on my father's mother's side) All we have is that he married "Etta" and had one child "Fanny Crecilius Markey". If this is the same "John Markey" I haven't a clue. he time frame would be about right since his parents lived 1824 to 1888 (father, Patrick) and 1832 to 1893 (mother, Julia GARGAN). Our John was one of 12 children, with EDWARD (my decendent) being 4th born behind George, John and Joseph. Edward was born in 1869 and dies 1908.

If you have any other details about John let me know and we can compare trees.

Pat Wilson-Perkins

Oh I'm sure we're related some how as well. Markey wasn't that popular a name. From my G-G-G-G-Father & Mother grave marker; they were born in the "Parish of Ennaskeen, Towns Land of Ervey, County Meade" but it was written out phonetically. We know now that it was probably the Civil Parish of Enniskean in the northernmost part of Meath on the border with County Cavan, Ervey; which puts them right in the same area as your ancestors. We are most likely distant (or not so distant) cousins. I love doing this because as thing fall into place you slowly get the "Ah-Ha" moments and see everything come together. I have several road blocks that just won't budge but when they do, my "Ah-Ha" moment will be fantastic. When you or I get close, we can share trees so we can inter-relate the families.
PWP

They were Roman Catholic.

===============================================================

===============================================================

1) Francis & Fanny Markey had 5 children, one of whom was Patrick Markey
2) Patrick Markey married Julia Gargan had 12 children, one of whom was Edward Joseph Markey
3) Edward Joseph Markey married Alice Gertrude CANNON had 5 children
4) Mary Angela Markey married Thomas Francis Wilson, Jr. had one son, Thomas F. Wilson, III
4) Rose Cecilia Markey (died age 45 in 1945)
4) Lawrence Aloysius Markey (died in 1959)
4) Edward Joseph Markey, (died age 60), married Nettie Mae Tracy had one son Edward J. Markey lives in Blue Hill, Maine
4) Alice Gertrude Markey (died age 56) married John J. Clements had one daughter, Alice Elizabeth (Betsy) Clements McKenna

===============================================================

===============================================================

The Cannon's were Gram's mother's side of the family, (Alice Gertrude Cannon). Dad's 1st cousin's name was Betsy or Alice Elizabeth. Alice Gertrude Cannon was Betsy's and Dad's and Grandmother. Betsy and her mother, (Alice Gertrude MARKEY who married John J. Clements) are named after her.

I haven't started on the Cannon side at all.
My great-grandfather, Owen Markey, emigrated toward the late 1800's. Came through Boston and settled in Dover, New Hampshire. He, along with younger brother Patrick and sister Mary were from Co. Monaghan (Monaghah Town, I am told). In Dover there are many people who are decendent from earlier immigrants from Armagh, and Armagh being next to Monaghan, I susppect he may of knew someone there.

Owen married twice while in Dover. Both wives passed young, leaving him a widower with 5 children. He eventually headed east to Manchester, New Hampshire where he met and married Anne Regan..they had two children, Martin and John. Martin Markey is my grandfather.

Owen's brother Patrick was in a scrap and thinking he had killed the other fella (he had not), fled. Last time possibly sighted was in New York City in the 1930's.

Ann, thanks for all of the info. I will 'digest' it in the next few days.

My email address is:  kberz@msn.com

I live in Colorado, in the USA. My grandfather, Andrew Markey was Mary Crorkan's son.

It will be very exciting looking at your information. I will be happy to share the only documents I have on Mary (her marriage banns, and the birth registraion of her daughter, Mary). I have a little more information on her, but it will take me a few days to dig it out, as I have just moved my office and boxed up a lot of 'stuff', as we are planning on moving soon.

Great to hear from you.

Kay
P.S.
Would anyone know of a John Markey who left Ireland to work in Scotland in the late 1840s? His family was from the Cootehill area. He married and stayed in Scotland. As he named one of his children Bernard (he died very young), I suspect we're looking in the same family.

His son, Andrew Markey, is my grandfather. He emigrated from Scotland to the US in the early 1880s. I have a photo of a 'cousin' from Ireland named Bridget McCabe.

I am about to request research (paid) from the Genealogy Center in County Cavan. When I was there in 2005, they said they had records beginning (or until?) 1826. I have just learned that this is the likely birth year of 'my' John Markey, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I believe that John may be the brother of Mary Crorkan. I know that she married a man named Hannaway while still in Ireland (I suppose in Co. Monaghan), and they had their first child there (named Patrick). Then they moved to Scotland and had 2 more children. I believe he died and she married John Markey in Oakley, Fife, Scotland. Their marriage was in 1853. On her daughter Mary's birth registration in 1855, she lists her place of origin as Tulleycorbet, Co. Monaghan, Ireland. The records there seem to have been destroyed, but I still hope to search school records there. I believe that Mary and John (Crorkan) may be siblings due to the rarity of the name, and the fact that both ended up in Scotland. I am in contact with a man in England who is a direct descendant of Patrick Hannoway (Mary's first child). As yet, he has not been able to help find Mary's parents either. I also hope to contact the genealogy center in Co. Monaghan and see what they can find.

I'm afraid the John you mention is not the right John, as my great-grandfather, John Markey married in Scotland (1853)to a widow named Mary Crorkan Hannoway (originally from County Monaghan). I feel sure this John was somehow related to your ancestors, but I don't know how yet.

Thanks for your reply. Still looking for a connection to the McCabes.

I tried to send you an e-mail but is was returned.
My name is Ann Crorkan Chisholm and hereafter is what I have on my Crorkans:

John and Ann McManus were married in 1885 in Aughalurcher, Co. Fermanagh. They lived in a small town in that same parish called Brobrohan. John was born in 1831 and he died in 1981 in Ayr, Scotland. His parents were ) Michael Crorkan (in some documents he is named Michael and in others John, perhaps his name was John Michael or Michael John) and Mary McQuade, Mary McQuade's parents were James McQuade and Catherine Shane. Ann's parents were Michael McManus and Mary Fox. Ann died in 1912 in Girvan, Scotland. I have no idea where John or Ann were born and I find it hard to believe he had no siblings. Perhaps like your Mary he came from Co. Monaghan and it was Ann McManus who was from Co. Fermangh.

When John and Ann left Ireland for Girvan in Scotland they already had three children: Mary b 1854, John b 1861 and James b 1865 they went on to have three more children in Scotland; Patrick b 1867, Francis b 1870 and Peter born 1873. I am a direct descendant of Patrick.

I have found Crorkans in Scotland, in fact there is still one in Girvan. I have also found them in Australia and Chile.

I hope I have been of help and together we can get past the brick wall, that is Ireland. Once you reach as far back as Ireland it is very difficult to find anything.

The 2nd cousin I found in Scotland actually went to Co. Fermanagh and tried to find some Crorkans. There are Crorkans / Crorkins / Crorkanes, etc. I imagine the name was spelled phonetically way back then and transcribed any old way. She had no luck though and could find nothing to link us to them, perhaps she was looking in the wrong place and she should have been looking in Co. Monaghan. She is the one who knows most about the Crorkans and where I got most of my information.

Where are you in the world? I am in Spain but I was born in Ayr, Scotland.

I have a lot more information but I don't want to bombard you at this stage in case these are not your Crorkans but I do hope they are. Do you have any documents on Mary that you would be willing to share? I don't have a lot but what I do have I will gladly share. My tree is not atall up to date but I will add you as a guest.

I am attaching to this e-mail information I received from a cousin on my mother's side who knows someone who is a Crorkan. I don't know if it will mean anything to you, it didn't to me nor my cousin in Scotland (the Crorkan expert) but you never know.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon and wishing you luck in your search.

Ann Crorkan Chisholm

p.s. Forgot to mention that my cousin in Scotland also has McGuigans in her family!

In looking at the beginning of your line, there is a possibility that John, the child of Francis & Fannie, could have ben the beginning of my known line. Our records indicate that John was born abt. 1800. That would make Francis and Fannie only 15 and 16 when he was born, which happens; but there no other Francis' in my line, which is unusual. John was supposedly from County Meath, Rathkenny. I have scored zero in my attempts to find a record of them. However, I have a research letter from th Meath Heritage Center that seems to verify some facts of your branch. I can email a jpeg to you if you want to write me at dmarkey at markey-consult dot com.

Thanks Della,
As far as I can ascertain my lot came from Wiltshire (confirmed by Census info) but it would be interesting to see if there was a connection...at least we could then eliminate other Markey names.
I know Jackie was doing the same line and had sent me some info however it is possible that we have both changed email addresses hence we lost contact. She was also on this mailing list.
My email is lorraine.purcell at bigpond.com.au (no spaces)to contact directly.
Thanks Lorraine

Markley Pictures in Bracken, Foster, Kentucky?

I recently bought a house in Foster, Kentucky. I came across this old picture of the house and what I believe to be the Markleys who built it in 1875. I'm fairly sure it was built by Andrew Jackson Markley.
Please let me know if you can help identify anyone in the picture.
Thanks,
Mark
