No problem, there was another Jack Markham born in Brigg around that time - Jack Markham b Jan/Feb/Mar 1905. There were a lot of Markham's there at the time!

Colin

Hi Helen,

I can't find any connections with my side of the Markham's, there were quite a few in Brigg in the 19th Century.
My grandfather was also Joseph Markham and he left Brigg in the 1880's for Hull.

I've found a couple of marriage records which might be interesting. In September 1901, Edward Markham married Mary Ann Clayton? Could be Joseph Edward or Edward Joseph?
Then in June 1906, Joe Robert Markham married Mary Ann Clayton which seems the more likely. Joe being short for Joseph.

I'll have another look tomorrow. If you've got the 1911 census online you can pay to look up where they were living.

Colin
Hi. My grandfather was Jack Markham, born 1906 in Brigg (parents Joseph and Mary Clayton). He died in the early 70s having spent most of his working life as a steelworker in Scunthorpe. He married Amy Beaman in 1927 and they had 7 daughters, 5 of which survived infancy. My mother was born in 1935. I too had no luck tracking down Mary Clayton so maybe it was only a common law arrangement or she used one name on her birth certificate but used another name for censuses? Regarding Frank, I understand he married and lived in Roundhay, Leeds. My mother also has a vague recollection of him in army uniform during the war but I haven't found any military records for him. Will ask her some more questions! Would be fascinated to hear more about my Markhams if you have the time!
Helen

To smsten1:

The only information I have comes from Curtis & Nancy Markham Hartwig's privately published 2008 workbook entitled "Descendants of Deacon Daniel Markham," but it sounds as though you have not seen that source. It is available through the NEHGS circulating library, but may be available elsewhere as well, I don't know.

In the workbook, under entry #254, Russell Markham, you will find that Russell was born in W. Hartland, Hartford Co., CT on 30 Jun 1783 and that his wife Electa, b. in Hatfield, Hampshire Co., MA on 3 Aug 1783, was the daughter of Selah BELDING and Esther GATES. Russell and Electa were apparently married in NY before 1813. Russell died in Coral, McHenry Co., IL on 20 Sep 1844, and Electa also died in Coral at the age of 95 on 3 Aug 1882. Both Russell and Electa are buried in Coral Cemetery, McHenry Co., IL.

Hope this helps you in locating Curtis and Nancy's workbook, which really is the most important source of New England Markham information available. Good luck! -- JW

I believe that Janet Ingram Markham was the daughter of William and Elizabeth Ingram who immigrated from Scotland in 1844 with their two daughters, Isabella and Janet (sometimes spelled Jennette) and settled in Richmond, MA. William and Elizabeth were listed in the MA census of 1850 residing in Richmond and he was listed as a blacksmith. He died in either 1886 or 1887 and she died in 1884. Isabella married George W. Phillips who was born in Pittsfield. George and Isabella had 5 children (Margaret, William, Harriet, Emerson and Ellen) before Isabella died at age 40 on 5/31/1865. George married Fannie Shaver in 1867. Isabella is the great, great grandmother of my husband. Hope this helps. I do have more information on the descendants.
