Joy:

John Boyce Markle *was* mentioned in this thread, but it was an error and should have been *Samuel* Boyce Markle. Samuel's father was Alexander Markle b. 1763 in Ulster Co., NY. Alexander had four brothers who served with Butler's Rangers and were discharged at Niagara in 1783. Alexander himself arrived there in 1783 or 1784 at about age 20-21.

Alexander and his brother Frederick both had sons baptized on 18 Feb 1793 at Niagara/Newark. Alexander's son was christened Samuel Boyce and Frederick's son was christened Solomon Osterhout. I suspect that the middle names came from respected friends or Ranger associates rather than family links. Frederick's sister-in-law did marry an Osterhout, but I've yet to find any early links to the Boyce family for any of the seven Markle brothers who settled in Ontario.

My file, beginning with the father of Frederick and Alexander, is here:
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op...

I'll be happy to answer any questions about the Markle line; please write directly to the address shown on the RootsWeb page.

Kirsten

One of my ancestors was the John Boyce who served in Butler's Rangers. I wonder if he is any relation to the John Boyce Markle mentioned in this thread. It seems incredible that he wouldn't be: likely one of his daughters married a Markle. Does anyone have any information on this?

Being now 2009, this info comes long after your post. Don't know if this has anything to do with your JWM, but there was a connection between my family and a John Wesley Markle in Pleasants Co. WV. My great-grandfather's sister, Mariah Jane Coss, was John Markle's 2nd wife. They had a son named Early. I only knew him, not the children of John Wesley's first wife. But I recall going to his house with my grandmother, Nina Coss Cox and my aunt, Glenna Cox Wilson (Glenna married the son of John Wesley's sister, Mollie Markle Wilson).

Markle y-DNA Special Pricing

Family Tree DNA is offering a temporary special price on 37-marker y-DNA tests ordered through the Markle surname site. Through 31 July the tests are priced at $119 instead of the regular $149.

The Markle Surname DNA Project represents all surname spelling variations such as Merckel, Miracle, Maracle, Merkley, and many others. To date, the Project has received 8 test results with two more pending. Even this relatively small sampling represents huge family lines from New York, Pennsylvania, the Southern US, and Ontario, Canada. Over 1,000 individuals have been identified in our pedigree lists with many more to follow. If you have a Markle line in your family history, it's likely you'll connect to one of these pedigrees.

If you have a living male relative with the Markle surname or any of the many spelling variations, this would be an ideal time to order a y-DNA test. Visit the Markle Surname DNA Project website at the link below to order a test kit, review pedigrees, and see y-DNA results posted to date.

http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/markle

I am also a great Granddaughter of Dora Belle Markell thru her first son Lloyd Markell Storey. You must be out of his brother Myrl's line.

David Markell and Lydia Young were married 24 Sep 1884 in Walworth Co., Wisc. Peter Keller Markell and Catherine Totten were married prior to 1840 probably in Schoharie Co., NY. Peter's parents were Henry Markle and Nancy Keller m. 17 Mar, 1817 in Minden, Montgomery, NY. Henry's parents were Jacob Markel and Anna Elizabeth Snell who were married 1791 in Manheim, Herkimer, NY. They had 7 children that I know of. Peter had 3 siblings, Henry, Jacob, and Elizabeth. Henry was born 7 Feb, 1792 in Palatine, Montgomery, NY. I would love to hear from you as it sounds like we are close cousins.

Friederich Merckel DNA Results

Now Markle researchers (all spelling variations) can quickly and easily prove through y-DNA testing whether their family lines link to 1710 Palatine immigrant Friederich Merckel of Ulster Co., NY. Test results have recently been recorded to establish a benchmark profile that will be matched by all direct male descendants in Friederich's line. Tests for descendants of other Merckel patriarchs are now in process with results to be announced as additional samples are received.

Men who carry the Markle surname are urged to participate in at least a 37-marker y-DNA test. Women who have Markles in their family history can prove the link by locating a male Markle relative (brother, uncle, or even a distant cousin) to test.

The Markle Surname DNA Project was established to catalog pedigrees and matching DNA test results for all Merckel lines (including Markle, Merkley, and Miracle, plus others). The site now includes pedigrees of seven immigrant patriarchs ca 1700 and nearly 1,000 of their direct descendants prior to 1910. Those who order DNA testing from FTDNA through the Markle Surname DNA Project before 31 Dec 2008 will receive a substantial discount.

Please visit the site's Home Page using the link below. You can search the pedigrees for your own Markle ancestor by clicking on the Patriarchs link. If your line is not yet listed, you can post a simple pedigree by clicking on the Pedigrees link. Join the project and order a DNA test kit at the reduced price by clicking on the Order link. If you already have DNA test results, or if you have questions or need help, the project administrators will be happy to assist. Contact information is listed at the bottom of the Home Page.

http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/markle/home

The abstract I've seen of Isaac's will online shows an awfully long time between the will being made and the will being probated. Is it possible that there was some kind of delay between the death and the probate?

I had a Markle bible belonging to Jacob Markle's grandson (my mother lost it somehow!) that gave years agreeing with the 1780-1796 spread previously mentioned for Jacob's sons - but didn't mention the names of their parents. It also would have been compiled years after the fact...

On the other hand, if the date I have for Catherine Schwartz Rittenhouse Markle's birth (1744) is correct, that makes her awfully old to be the mother of the younger children. I wonder if Catherine was Jacob Markle's second wife, and not the mother of his children.

(As far as the use of the Rittenhouse name - the connection between the two families seems a little closer than "a Markle married a Rittenhouse widow". There was certainly some kind of business relationship regarding the paper mill, and a Jacob Markle witnessed Jacob Rittenhouse's will - the families must have been fairly close, and if Jacob Markle did have a prior wife, she might have been a Rittenhouse by birth.)

Cathy Willey

The date of death I have for Jacob is 1811. I believe Cassel has it listed as he had "No issue". Page 129. I looked at Isaacs will in 1998, an it was in beautiful condition. It mentions four children, the same names as listed in Cassel. I think I have a copy around here somewhere ....

Jim

Finally found the reason several generations of people are named like this: "[First Name] Rittenhouse MARKLE". It was because Jacob MARKLE was indentured at the RITTENHOUSE papermills in 1765 [age 11], married the widow of a RITTENHOUSE (Catherine nee SCHWARTZ) late 1700s, managed the ailing mills in Jacob R's old age, then Rittenhouse died no issue 1811. So Jacob and Catherine had children of both RITTENHOUSE and MARKLE surnames.

BTW, there are others named "[First name] Markle RITTENHOUSE", just to confuse things.

Kinda new at genealogy. I have only been able to trace my family back to my ggg grandfather John Markle b. 1819in Pa m. Sara Ann (Crawford?) Thought Jacob and Margaret might be John's parents. Any info will be helpful.

Thanks

Terri Boatman

Yes, I am interested and have only been guessing based on census records thus far. Their son, Harry, was my uncle by his marriage to Ruth Coughlin in 1943. When I visited Ruth in 2005 to review the McDole side of the family (her mother was Ruth, daughter of Ellsworth, son of James and his wife, Abigail Jane Markle) she mentioned that her mother-in-law had been a Markle also. She was not aware of her great-grandmother McDole's name -- nor did she know or recall anything further about Susan's family line. I would appreciate any information you can provide. Thanks.

Adams brothers are John Markle Jr. and Jacob Markle. The is some dispute whether Samuel is Adams father but records in Litch Creek Cemetery in Markleville show that John is his father. I am hunting dilgently for records showing when John imigrated from Scotland Where he went because of religious oppression.
Hi Sue. I don't see it. Isaac's children wern't juveniles when Jacob married the "Rittenhouse Widow". This still doesn't show why our ancestor would have named his children after his wife's first husband - would he have admired them THAT much?

Jim

I'm not positive on all of Jacob and Margaret's children, although I have some papers I can look through later. Two of their children were: (1) Israel, a justice of the peace, constable, coroner, and farmer, who married Maria or Mariah Ricket and produced: Jacob W (1839), George A. (01 Aug 1840), Eliza (17 Feb 1842), Samuel B. or D. (9 Aug 1844), Rachel (b. 1847), Wilson S. (23 Sep 1848), Dr. Isaiah Franklin (3 Oct 1850), Israel C. (13 Dec 1852), Henry Allen, Esq. -- my great grandfather -- (21 Oct 1854), Lucy or Lucia A. Markel (1857), and Artha or Ardella M ( 1860); and, (2) Solomon, who married a Hannah ?, and whose children included: Jacob J. (1837), Israel (1838), Mary (1839), Margaret (1841), Elizabeth (1843), Aaron (1845), and Ezner (1848). Jacob's father was Heinrich Martin Markel, who was born in Alsace, Germany and lived 1732-1789. He died in Codorus,York Co., PA. Does this track with your info? Please let me know so we can figure this out together. I haven't traced birth records for Heinrich, etc. yet, but I have info back 3 to 4 generations, and in some places, back to 1540 on some GGG, etc. lines.

Let me know what you think!

Joycene Harwood
Hi Kirsten,

Awww, sucks, do research? I thought that stopped in school and I could just pass GEDCOMs and WFTs around like so much gossip ;-)

As I see it, after enough baseless GEDCOMs are passed around they will become fact (the rational behind the WFT lines) - and here you go spoiling that.

Just pulling your leg. Nice to meet someone else doing some research and thanks for helping separate these two totally distinct lines.

Glen
Hi Kirsten,

Thank you for the offer, but I'm from the other line of fantasy Merkel's who actually came from Schillersdorf/Lambsheim > PA.

I posted a correction to that line earlier at:
http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.markle/235/mb.ashx

Your assistance on just educating people is help enough.

Glen

Re: MARKLE Family in Ontario

Kirsten:
Adam Markle b. 1813 d. 1887 is my gggrandfather. I have suspected that John Boyce Markle is his father but I have never been able to confirm this even in the Ontario Archives. I found John's baptism record (1793 in Niagara-on-the-lake) and he was the son of Alexander Markle and Rebecca Vanderlip. (Another source says Rebecca Weaver) Do you have proof he was Adam's father.
It has been a source of frustration as some family members have maintained that the family has Scottish origins although they have done little research. I know we definitley go back to Adam Markle. I am also interested in Butler's Rangers, a Loyalist group of soldiers who fought the rebels (Americans) in Pennsylvania and New York. There were a number of Markles in the Rangers including a John. Are you aware of this group?
Thanks for your attention a.bmarkle@sympatico.ca
