Classification: Query
Surnames: Marks, Joseph
I'm seeking information about my grandfather's grandfather, Wolf Marks. Here's what we know:
Wolf was born in Russia-Poland around 1860. He wed Sarah Joseph, daughter of Isaac.
Wolf (Aron Zev) Marks (b 1857 Rus-Pol, d 1924)
Sarah Joseph (b 1860 Rus-Pol, d 1934)
Wolf's death certificate lists Harris Marks and Mary Weiss as his parents. Sarah's death certifcate lists Isaac Joseph and Ethel Cohen as her parents.
They arrived in London, preagnant, around 1882. In England, they gave birth to two sons:
- Herman Marks (b. 1882 - d. 1981)
- Joseph Marks (b. 1886 - d. 1962)
Around 1887/8, the couple moved to New York City and had 6 more children: Bertha, Frances, Jacob, Tessi, Harry, and Ethel.
Wolf's citizenship in the US was revoked, but was subsequently returned. It's possible that he was involved in something criminal, but more likely, it probably means that he traveled back to his home country at some point.
Wolf was a tailor, like many Jews in London during this period.
If you have any information about any of these relatives, I would really enjoy hearing from you. Thanks very much in advance
