Howdy, I'm somewhere in that line, born in '87, if you can provide some more information on what you're looking for perhaps I can help, but I'm hesitant to post anything revealing without some more information on your part. You'll have to forgive my internet-paranoia but it comes with the territory.

Thanks,
-Chris

Hi Robert

Further to your last message (photo's). At the moment I don't have any, if I do I will send you some. Also about his medals I don't know where they are, never seen them in my life time. It seem's that this poor chap had been forgotten for so long until now that is. I remember asking my Grand-father & Grand-mother why we were standing still on a sunday morning when I was about 4-5yrs of age, to which I was told that my Grand-dad had lost a brother in the great war & my Grand-ma had lost her dad as well. This memory has only come back to me since I found out about Willie, also could I get a copy of his medals from the war office at all, no idea where his originals are & the relevant paper work.

Kind regards
Jason

Hello Rod, thanks for the extra information. I can clear up up how he was a Searjeant in the Coldstrean guards after just 2.5 years.

Charles left the army in 1912 and began work in the clerical department of Vickers Ltd. In 1914 he was called up as a reservist.

So he may have taken his previous rank.

Thanks

Robert.

Hello Robert

Charles's birth was registered in the September quarter 1886 in Sheffield. He was the son of Joseph Wildsmith Marples, joiner & Ellen Mosley, and had 3 elder brothers and a younger sister.

On 3rd January 1913 he married Mary Ellen Last at which time he was a clerk, living at 8 Burton Street. They married in Owlerton parish church in north west Sheffield. They had a daughter Mary A. whose birth was registered in the December quarter in Sheffield.

I am slightly uneasy about the identification of Serjeant Charles Marples as this Charles Marples, as there is nothing in the above to suggest that they are one and the same person. I find it odd thhat someone who was a clerk in 1913 is a serjeant in the Coldstream Guards two and a half years. The identification of this Charles as Serjeant Charles came fom onne of his siblings' descendants.

That's all I've got and I hope it helps a bit.

Kind regards

Rodmeu

I am looking for info on my grt. grandma Avis Marie Johnson who was adopted by Bertha Johnson (Marple). I was told that she was a triplet and she was adopted when she was 3 yrs old (about 1918). She may have been the daughter of bertha's sister who died of the influenza outbreak about 1917 or 1918. An old letter said Kenneth Marple of Florida had more info of Avis' birth parents. I believe Avis was born July 11, 1915 in Joplin, MO or around Howell County. Any info please e-mail dixiedoodahday@yahoo.com
Marple is still around please contact me at whthndr@earthlink.net. If that letter from Grace B. Harper Marple is still available I would dearly love a copy of it.
I tried contacting you via email at the address you posted but it did not go through, stating that your account was inactive.

Hoping someone who can help will find this note -

Lois Marple Appleton

I purchased a postcard collection from an auction
in Ontario Canada. There are a lot of postcards with writing on them and the family is called Marples.
The album was presented to Miss Ida Mary Marples
on the occasion of her 12th birthday Oct 12, 1912
on the inside cover there is written 39 Watson Ave.
West Toronto, Ontario. I believe this to have been added at a later date, as some of the postcards are
postmarked and of course have the address of Meersbrook (probably the house name) Sheffield.
I have read numerous postcards dated from the early 1900's from various places around the world...to various family members, namely George, Elsie,Fred, Alice, Flossie,
There is one in particular, from a Grace, to a Mrs.
Gallagher of Sheffield, it has Mamma lithographed on the flip side. One is addressed to Mr. A. Marples sent from Warrington, Cheshire by a niece Lottie(?) date 1911.
I think Fred must have emigrated to Canada as there are a few from Montreal that were never posted.
He is telling the family that he is homesick and lonely and wants them to come soon.
There is another of a little boy I think he is called
Ernest Thorpe as the name is handwritten on the back.
Could you let me know if any of these names mean anything to you.
Thanks

Sorry, I have not found your tree on Ancestry. I'm not sure how to get that. Can you send me a link to that site? Where were your Marple's located? A lot were in Winchester area. I think Georgia married a Marple, and they lived in Charles Town, WV in the 1940's. I sure wish that the 1890 census hadn't burned!

Thank You?

Jacob D. Marple b. 1800 VA

I am trying to find some documentation on the parents of Jacob D. Marple b. 1800 VA. He was married to Nancy Stackhouse, with children Barbara, Nancy, Emeline, MaryAnn, Catherine and John E.
It is believed that his parents were John Abraham Marple and Barbara Weaver.
I have found Amos Marple, m. to Jemima; and Moses Marple in 1850. I believe both to be brothers of Jacob.
James G. Marple, m. to Beshia is living next door to Jacob D. I would like to know his relationship to Jacob. No one has a James as a brother to Jacob.
All of the family seem to be in Barbour Co. in 1850.
If anyone can help me establish any documentation on the parents and siblings of Jacob D. it would be much appreciated.
Thank you.

Re: Jacob D. Marple b. 1800 VA

Linda Meyers sent me the following marriage information on Jacob Marple. Jacob married Nancy Stackhouse in Barbour County, West Virginia about 26 June 1844. Marriage bond dated 26 June 1844, Barbour County, West Virginia.
Family research has given the parents of Barbara Marple Trimble as Jacob Marple & Nancy. As Barbara was born in 1822/1823, her mother would not have been Nancy Stackhouse. Jacob must have been married twice, and it is likely that his first wife was named Nancy also.
Barbara would fit with the family in the 1840 census. At this time there is no proof for her parentage, only the name, age, and location fits with this family. Per Linda, there was a 1861 deed to J.E. Marple by Andrew & Barbara Trimble. Trimble family members lived next to the Marples in the 1850 Barbour Co. census.
I have the children of Jacob & Nancy as Barbara, Emeline, Marian, Catherine, Amos & John E. Except for Barbara & Amos, these children are found in the 1850 census with Jacob. I need more information to be certain of the other children. Other researchers have the following children attached to Jacob:
Mary b. abt. 1820, married Joseph Dicks.
Eliza b. abt. 1825, married Peregrine Chrislip. Per Linda, her death record lists her parents as Jacob & N. Marple.
Sophonia b. abt. 1826, married Marshall Cotrill. Living next to Amos G. in 1850.
Ingaby b. 1832, married Joseph Day.
Alvin. It is said he died young. Barbara & John E. each named a child Alvin.
I hope this helps.
Jean
Since my last posting, I have found the following:
Joseph Marples born 1855 (son of Charles & Rachel) married Ellen Somerset in 1877 Sheffield.
They had 5 children:
1. Mary Ellen born 1879.
2. Edith born 1884
3. Charles born 1886
4. Elizabeth born 1888
5. William born 1890

Ellen Marples died March 1/4 1893 (possibly in childbirth as found Joseph born/died same quarter 1893.
Joseph Marples died in 1895.

On the 1901 census 4 of the Marples children - Mary Ellen, Edith, Elizabeth & William were with their Aunt Elizabeth & her husband William Lee. The other child Charles was with his Aunt Ann & her husband Frank Willey. It is believed that Ann & Frank Willey adopted Charles Marples.

Please contact me if any of these names are familiar to you.

Thanks,
Anne

Hello!
Sorry it took so long to answere. I haven't been doing this for a littlewhile.
Still looking for George and Minnie. Their daughter Edith (my g-mother) was a Marple when she married my g-father Lionel "Linus" Marple, so they had to be kin somewhere, but can't find out. William Perry is in the line, but I don't have my papers in front of me at the moment to tell you how he's kin.
If you find a George that fits what I'm looking for, would you care to let me know? You can e-mail me at any time.
Thanks Very Much.
Pam
