Generation No. 1

1. William2 Marriott (Matthias1) was born Abt. 1685 in Surry Co., VA, and died Abt. 1766 in Surry Co., VA. He married Sarah Collier Marriott Abt. 1715, daughter of Thomas Collier and Collier Unkn.. She was born Abt. 1695 in Surry Co., VA, and died Bef. 1765 in Surry Co., VA.

Notes for William Marriott:
William Marriott was born ca 1685/88, Surry Co., Va.; his will was probated 20 Jan 1767, Surry Co. He was executor of his father's will and co-executor of Thos. Collier's will. A planter in Surry Co., he made numerous land transactions there: see Deed Bk 7: pp.795,473,568,627; Deed Bk. 8: pp.281,279,493.
He married possibly as early as 1715 (but before deed of 16 Nov 1725 which bears both names), to Sarah Collier (b. ca. 1695; probably died before 1765, as she is not mentioned in husband's will), daughter of Thomas Collier (b. 1665, Surrry Co., VA; will filed 20 Mar 1727/8 (O.S.).

Note: In the will of the children's grandfather Thomas Collier, made 15 Feb 1727/8, "sick and weak in body", bequest item 11 is to Mary, 12th item concerns William and Thomas. If order of precedence means anything, possibly birth-dates from other sources may be incorrect. Mathias and Benjamin are not mentioned.
A transcription of William's will which has been circulated has date of 20 Sep 1767 (sic) for the writing and 20 Jan 1767 for presentation in court!

WILL OF WILLIAM MARRIOTT
In the name of God Amen. I William Marriott of the County of Surry make this my last Will Testament. First I resign my Soul to its Creator in all humble hope of its future Happiness through the Merits and Mediation of Jesus Christ -- As to what Temporal Estate it hath pleased God to entrust me with I dispose of in manner following. Viz. after paying my Just Debts.
I give and devise to my Son Thomas Marriott my Plantation in the County of Brunswick and the Land adjoining on the South side of Maharen River and on the North of Avents (sic) Creek also Two Acres of Land adjoining the Mill on the other side of said Creek to him and his Heirs forever.
I give devise to my said Son Thos the following Slaves to wit Roger Sue Ned pat (sic) her children also my Boy Mun to him his Heirs forever.
I give devise to my Son Matthias Marriott one Mocety (sic) of my Land in Wire Neck (sic) by my Estimation Viz. that part lying on the Creek within the Line that I have made to him and his Heirs forever.
The other part of my Land in Wire Neck which I have Divided by a line of Marked Trees that had into a Branch which Compleats the Division that part of it that has the Plantation whereon my Son Benja. Marriott liv'd and lies on the Mill Swamp.
I give and devise to my Grand Son William Marriott younger Son of the Benjamin with half the Stock that shall be on said plantation when his Brother John Marriott comes to the age of Eighteen years to him his heirs
forever to be entered upon when he arrives to the Age of Eighteen Years. The other part which on Sunken Marsh Road also the Sum of Ten pounds with half the stock which shall be upon the Plantation whereon my said Son Benjamin Dec.(sic) lives.
I give and devise to my Grand son John Marriott elder Son of the said Benja. when he arrives to the age of Eighteen, to him and his Heirs forever upon condition that he the said John at that time equally divide the Slaves put into the Possession of the said Benjamin his Father by me with all their (???) but if he refuse I give the said Land said Ten pound also the Cattle to his said Brother Wm. to him his heirs forever.
My will is that Stephenson Burton and his wife Elizabeth enjoy the use of the Dwelling House wherein he now lives until my said GrandSon Wm. Marriott arrive to the Age of Eighteen Years.
I give and devise to my Son Matthias Marriott that Tract of Land plantation whereon Peter Redborn now lives to him and his Heirs forever.
I give and devise to my GrandSon William Davis my Land in the County of Brunswick lying in the South Side of Avents Creek except the two Acres above mentioned adjoining my Son Thos. Mill and his Heirs forever.
I give and devise to my Son Matthias the following Slaves to wit Io (sic) Lucy Daniel Tom and Kate to him his Heirs forever.
I give and devise to my said Son Matthias my Negroe Man Will upon condition that he the said Matthias pay annually the Sum of Five Pounds Current Money if the fellow live Ten Years towards the Maintenance and Education of my Daughter Mary Davis's Five Smalest Children to him and his Heirs forever.
I give and devise to my Son in Law Henry Davis the following Slaves to wit Ieny (sic) Hanna to him his Heirs forever.
The remainder of my Estate I give to be equally divided between my Two Sones Thos. Matthias and my said Son in Law Henry Davis as they can agree.
Lastly I do nominate and appoint my Son Matthias Marriott sole Exec. of this my last Will Testament In conformation of which I have hereunto set my Hand and Affixed my Seal this Twenteth Day of of September MDCCLXV. (1765 WWW)

3. Thomas3 Marriott (William2, Matthias1) was born Abt. 1720 in Surry Co., VA, and died Abt. 1789. He married Elizabeth Warren Marriott Abt. 1745 in Brunswick Co., VA, daughter of Allen Warren and Anne Hart.

Notes for Thomas Marriott:
Thomas Marriott b. ca. 1720, Surry Co., VA; will made 21 Oct 1784, probated 24 Aug 1789 (Brunswick Co., VA WB 5, p. 316).
Thomas moved to his father's 630 acre tract on south side of Meherrin River and Avent's creek in Brunswick County. On 3 Nov 1750, he acquired adjoining 476 acres from the Colony o VA, and on 11 May 1754, he bought a further adjoining 130 acres on Avent's creek. He may have been a merchant as well as a planter.
He sold a total of 630 acres in 4 transactions from 1757 to 1770. Remaining property willed to children and daughter Sarah's children. He was also bequeathed land and slaves by his father's will, 1767.
He married ca 1745, Brunswick Co. to Elizabeth Warren, dau. of Allen Warren II and Anne Hart. Thomas and his wife Elizabeth were second cousins. Thomas's grandmother Alice Warren was a sister to Elizabeth's grandfather Allen Warren.

Notes for Thomas Jr. Marriott:
Thomas Marriott Jr. was probably born in Brunswick Co., VA arount 1760. Hemarried 14 Dec 1785 to Elizabeth Suggert. Some records have her named spelled "Succett" (a grandson was named Edgecomb [Suckett] Marriott. He may have been given his grandmothers maiden name Suggert/Succett which came to be pronounced Suckett, from which he acquired the obvious nick-name "Suck").
Thomas Jr. was bequeathed estate by father Thomas Sr. Thomas and Elizabeth moved by 1806 to Mecklenburg Co., VA and by 1807 to Roane Co., TN.

Notes for Elizabeth Suggett Marriott:
Elizabeth Suggert was born in VA sometime around 1770 and died after the
1850 census. She was listed in the Morgan Co., MO 1850 census as living with her daughter Prudence Silvey. Her exact death date and place of burial is not known
by W.W.Williams as of 1989.

4. Mathias3 Marriott (William2, Matthias1) was born Abt. 1722 in Surry Co., VA, and died 1775 in Surry Co., VA. He married Elizabeth Gray Marriott Abt. 1757 in Surry Co. Va.. She was born Abt. 1738 in Surry Co. Va., and died Abt. 1778.

genealogy of Gray family. Mathias Marriott who married Elizabeth Gray was the son of Wm. Marriott Sarah Collier and a Grandson of Mathias Marriott and Alice Warren.

Book 22 Aug 1775: Elizabeth Marriott appointed Guardian of Sarah; William; and Thomas, orphans of Matthias Marriott (note: this is a grandson of the original Matthias Marriott WWW). Mathias Marriott died before 22 Aug 1775.

5. Benjamin3 Marriott (William2, Matthias1) was born Abt. 1725 in Surry Co., VA, and died August 18, 1762 in Surry Co., VA. He married Mourning Cornwell November 18, 1756 in Surry Co. Va., daughter of Jacob Cornwell and Elizabeth Crew. She was born Abt. 1742, and died December 07, 1774 in Pasquotank Co., N.C..

Children of Benjamin Marriott and Mourning Cornwell are:
15 i. John4 Marriott, born Abt. 1758. He married Mary Thompson Marriott January 18, 1796 in Green Co. Tenn.; born Abt. 1779 in Penn. or N.C.; died 1854 in Tenn..

Notes for John Marriott:
John's father died when he was very small. He moved to N.C. with his mother stepfather Caleb Trueblood. He lived for a time in Va. according to "Quaker Records" and served in the Relvol. war. His papers showed a military grant in Greene Co. Tenn. He served as a Capt.
After he married Mary Thompson, they moved to Blount Co. Tenn. Roan Co. Tenn. was formed from Blount Co. And in 1807 Rhea Co. was formed from the same area. John then lived in Rhea Co. He died there.

Notes for Isham Davis:
Unproven Family tradition says that Isham Davis was married to Sarah Long.in 1775.
Decendants say however that he has been proven to have been Married to
Charlotte---? she was named in a 1792 land record in Halifax Co. N.C. concerning Isham.
