Just happened to see your post (a little late). I have a postcard from Joseph G. Marrs to my grandfather, J.K. Nash. He was married to Samuel Morgan Marrs' daughter Erie Marrs Nash (my grandmother). If you have any info on Sam Marrs, I would be grateful. I have hit a wall. The only clue I have about his maternal parentage is that he was living with a family named Dawson in Hickman County when he was a child and young man. I know he moved to West Tenn. to be closer to his half brothers. Thanks.

My Grandfather was Thomas Floyd Marrs and was born on 1/16/1902 in Dawson, Texas and grew up in Weches, TX (outside of Crockett, TX). I was told when I was young that his family was part Cherokee and had moved from Oklahoma because his father had asthma.

Hello: You might check www.footnote.com
They have the Dawes Indian Rolls and Packets online where you can study them and/or print them off. They also have some Cherokee specific data. This is a very good site for many databases and is very reasonably priced at $59.99 for a year's subscription. Or you can print off individual records for so much a copy. I'm in my 2nd year as a subscriber and find it very helpful. Hope this helps you,
Lynda

Sorry about the misinformation I gave you regarding my aunt.
I was a little confused. She was on my other side. John Detweiler's wife was my father's sister Carolyn.

All these people are probably gone by now. I myself am almost 80. Wish I could help you. You might be able to research records in Hicksville, LI NY or Oyster Bay.

However, I am 99% certain about the Cherokee thing so you are on the right track. I just can't help you prove it.

My father worked for a while for H.B. Marrs Roofing Co. which was owned by his brother Hiram B. Marrs. Prior to his death in 1975 or 1976 (I can't remember exactly) my father lived with John and Helen Detwieler (his sister) in Hicksville, L.I. New York. My mother and father separated when I was little so I had little contact with the Marrs side of the family but I do know that one of his sisters lived in Arizona. I only knew of her by her nickname of "Honey". At my dad's funeral I also met a cousin called "Bobbie" (female). Back to Hiram B. Marrs--in the '70s he and his wife lived in Deerfield Beach, FL.
There are several Marrs in the book where I live now in Brevard County, Florida. Hope this helps.

Frank is my mother's grandfather also. My mother's father was Donald Marrs (Alexander's brother). Her name is Gladys (do you know who she is). Did your father ever mention any other names or do you know of someone in the family that might know a little bit more.

You are the first relation I have found since I began looking years ago.

The reason being is that if I can prove in fact that Frank's mother was a full blood cherokee indian, there are lots of college advantages you can get from having 1/16 cherokee blood relations. I have children going into college and would love to be able to prove it. I have copies of Franks death certificate and it states his mother's name as Eliza Smith and father as Thomas. Frank was born in Fayetville, Arkansas.

I can't seem to find any correlation between them all in any of the census's.

Thanks for responding, it is exciting to finally contact someone with a relation to my mom's family.

Re: Samuel Marrs age 14 on 1850 Census, Arkansas, Washington, Mountain

Janet,

Yes, widening the search field does help. Also, if you think you know the area, searching the census by township or even county can pay off, but it does take time. The Prairie Grove twp census for 1880, for example, had 74 pages listing a few thousand people.

Other things that can be useful include use of wildcards
(Mar* for any name starting with Mar). A search for Sam* Mar* b. 1836 Arkansas turns up some interesting things, including a Samueli Marrs on the Slave Schedule for Mountain Twp. Who was the owner? You do have to give the first three letters, though, so you cannot use M* to search for Mon and everything else starting with M.

You can also simply fill in certain fields and select Exact Match while leaving out fields that might be variable. For example, you might search for an exact match on Samuel P b. 1836 plus or minus 3 years in Arkansas, leaving the surname blank. Or search a specific census for an exact match on surname Marrs. That will turn up a lot, so maybe you will need to limit it to one state, and maybe specify a birth date of e.g. 1800 or 1850. This one has to be repeated for each (mis)spelling of the surname, but it can get you a list of a lot of candidates quickly.

If you wish to provide a correction to a census entry once found, you first search for your entry (e.g. Sam Man on the 1860 for Arkansas). Then put your mouse over (in this case) 1860 United States Federal Census to see the Preview, and slide your mouse over the Preview and click on the person's name. That will bring up a page with Comments and Corrections appearing under Page Tools on the left side.
Click on that and you will get the form for a correction.

I seem to remember finding the Comments and Corrections in a different location some months ago, but wherever it is found, that is the function to use.

Janet,

One thing on wildcards I did not mention is that you can put one in the middle of a name, e.g. Sam*l, use more than one in a name Sa*m* (I think), and use a ? (I think) for one letter so Herm?n would pick up Herman, Hermen, and Hermxn if such a thing occured. Check help files for more information. They also have information on the correction and comments function.

One final request. The 1880 Census tells me S.P. Marrs is
Ada Stella Marrs father (hence he is my great-grandfather), but I do not have explicit evidence that Samuel P. is the son of Alexander and Vianna. I accept your statement that he is, but do you know of an available document that shows this? Or have I overlooked such a thing in my searches?

jim beard

Janet,

I am confused once again.

As I now have it, Alexander Marrs and Vianna Burden had a son Samuel P., b. 1836, who in 1860 was in Cane Hill with dad, mom, Caroline age 24 and James age 1. This Samuel P. in 1869 married Caroline M. Herd (name spelled variously), and in 1870 they appeared on the census for Lamar Texas. Their children included Ada Stella Marrs b. 1875, who married my grandfather Frank Minor Beard b. 1866. On the 1880, S.P. Marrs, Caroline, and family including Stella were in Prairie Grove, Washington County, Arkansas. The 1890 census is missing, but on the 1900 Samuel, Caroline M., Ada A., Wesley T., and Ellen (?Dell?) were in Burnham Twp, Pawnee County, Oklahoma.

Samuel L. Marrs and Tempy had a son Samuel Marrs b. 1836 who in 1860 was in Prairie Grove with Rebecca in the household of Squire Howell. This Samuel and Rebecca went off to Oregon and were there for the censuses of 1870, 1880, and 1900. (1890 census records missing.)

As stated in my original post, both these Samuels b. 1836 in 1850 were living in households next to each other in Mountain Twp, Washington, Arkansas.

Does the above match how you see it?

Was the son of Samuel L. Marrs and Tempy also a Samuel P. Marrs with middle initial P?

What do you mean by, "This Samuel has to be Issaac's and
Catherine's"?

Separately, who are first cousins? The two Samuels b. 1836?

And, what is the name that goes with the initial P.? Who (which Samuel) is Phenias?

Janet,

After further exchange with John Heard, we are in agreement that the Samuel Marrs son of Samuel L. and Tempy married Rebecca and was in the household of Squire Howell for the 1860 Census. Thereafter, this couple went to Oregon and stayed there through the 1900 Census. He is not the Samuel Marrs that married Caroline Herd and was father to Ada Stella Marrs, my grandmother.

The Samuel of interest to me was, as you stated, at home with Alexander and Vianna in Cane Hill for the 1860, with apparent wife Caroline and son James. This is not the Caroline that was mother to Ada Stella, as the latter was born May 1849 in Tennessee and married Samuel P. on 2 December 1869, in Paris, Lamar County, Texas.

A handwritten note I have a copy of states that "Samuel P. Marrs went to confederate army leaving wife & 6 children at Prairie Grove. He was captured & changed sides. When he returned, only 1 boy & 1 girl were still living." This remains a mystery to me. This is not the sort of note I would expect to be created from the whole cloth, but I have no clue about the "wife & 6 children" referred to.

On other matters, John seems to think that Alexander and Samuel L were brothers, with Isaac b. Virginia and Catherine b. Georgia their father. He also thinks that both Samuels, the son of Alexander b. 1836 and the son of Samuel L. b. 1836, had middle initial P. His question is whether the middle name was the same, or just the initial.

At some point I will have to look at Isaac & Catherine, but for the moment I have had my hands sorting out the two Samuels. I still have a few loose ends to trace out.

Hello,
Can anyone help me? I have two men, both named Alexander Mars/Marrs who married into my family and I need a little help in identifying their families. I have an Alexander Marrs born 2-28-1824 in I believe Crawford Co., Arkansas and died 1-31-1903 in McLennan County, Texas who married Nancy Jane Mayberry in 1844 in Ark. and then I have an Alexander A. Marrs/Mars born about 1824 in Arkansas and died before 1900 in Ark. who married an Elizabeth Mayberry about the same time also in Ark. Both men raised large families but I am confused as to who these two men belonged to, any help on this matter would surely be appreciated.
Thanks, Audrey
If you send for Bob Marrs` SS5 form it will give you his birthplace & parents names. You can then try to locate the family on a census & other records. Go here to find Bob G. Marrs on the SSDI; you can then generate a letter to the SS Admin. from his data page. http://ssdi.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi

Pat R.

Jim, Let me check it out again, because what you said that he could have married two different "Carolines' is making sence. I'm currently working on another line, and I'll have to get back and check. I know my line or part of my line ended up in Pawnee Co., Okla. Mine is off Aaron Alexander, Samuel P.'s brother. The P. stands for Phenias/Fennius/Phineous. Aaron and his 1st wife Laura Barnes, named their first son Phenias E. I'm lead to believe lately that stands for 'Ewing". Not sure on that though. I'll post again soon. Thanks, Janet

Aaron A.'s dad and mom is Alexander A. Marrs (b. 1799 GA),and wife Vianna Burden (B. 1797).................... It gets confusing. Alexander Aaron Marrs, and his son Aaron Alexander Marrs. Sorry for the mistake. Also, any Marrs clues you have, I'd greatly appreciate. Thanks!

Re: Finis Ewing Marrs

Finis or PHENIUS/Phinias E. Marrs was born October of 1856 in Washington Co., Arkansas. This is my husbands line. Actually, Phenius would be his great grand-dad. Finnie married Elizabeth Hardy Jan 23, 1879 in Washington Co., Ark. They had 8 children, only 6 lived to adults. My Ancestry family is MARRS/DALEY - SMITH/LLOYD, and all the info (what I've found) is there. If you use the 10,000 ways you can spell MARRS, you'll find them.(Mars/Marr/Mors/Mirs/Mers/Maus/Maws/Mawes/Mires/Monn/Mann/Mass/Moss/Mare/Mares/Meares).......ect. I have it recorded in my family tree. (If you can't access it, email me at JLSharp310@aol.com and I'll fill you in) Anyway, Finny's dad and mom were Alexander A. Marrs, b. 1799 GA, and Vianna Burden (b. 1797 KY) on 11-6-1820 in Butler Co., Kentucky. They stayed in Kentucky until about 1830-ish, when they moved to Washington County, Arkansas, where the remaining children were born. Alex & Vinny's children were:
1)Ann, b. abt 1822 Butler Co., Kentucky.....2)Elizabeth, b. abt 1823 KY.......3)William Houston, b. 1828 KY(married Arrey Choate).....4)Moses W. b. 1830-ish in KY or ARK.......5)Aaron Alexander, (Phenias's granddad) b 12-28-1832 in Washington Co., Ark........6)Samuel P., b. 1836 ARK (think he married 2 caroline's).............7)Isaac, b abt 1838, ARK married SarAh Ann Matthews.......and 8)John Phenias, b. 1842 ARK and married Mary Matilda Deatherow...........
Aaron Alexander Marrs married 1st, Laura A. Barnes (b. abt 1839 TN) They had 4 children before she died abt 1868-ish. 1) Clemintine, b 1855 Ark... 2) Phenius E. b. 1856 Ark..... 3)Elizabeth, b abt 1858 Ark....... 4) Martha Evelyn, b January 1859 Ark.
Aaron Alexander married 2nd Matilda E. Marrs (her dad & mom were: James Marrs (1785 VA - 1876) and Isabella Edminson (b. 1796 NC).
Aaron and Matilda had 4 kids too. Sarah, b 1870......James Alexander, b 1872.......Samuel, b 1877.....& Malinda Belle, b abt 1880. All 8 children were born in Arkansas.
Phenius (b 1856)and Elizabeth Hardy (b 1861) had 8 children (that I found...might be more).
1)Laura, 1881-1882......2)Callie, 1884......3)Mary 1887-1888.......4)Lee E. 1890..........5)Willis Frank (our line) 1893, born in Indian Territory, present day Oklahoma.....6)Eva, 1897....7)Herman E. 1902.....8)Lloyd J. 1904.

Hope this little bit helps. Happy searching!

Hey Jim, Thanks for the tip about Oregon. I saw that, and had it marked, and figured it couldn't possibly be him. I thought you were wrong about the Rebecca, as I had them in 1860 cane hill, Ark. But it is possible about the six children. James was there in 1860, there could have been one on the way, (and it could have been twins..maybe?)and maybe he didn't enter the war right away, and another could be accounted for. I know they had some time off, and it could account for the others, until he was captured. And that would depend on how long he was held. He also might have had some time off from the Union side as well. Maybe the phrasing of the article leaves the impression they were already there about 1861. I'm with you about that not making sence, unless she had previously been married and had some children that weren't on the census, or in another household. It does seem though, that the Samuel P. that I have (wrongly) with the 2 wives named Caroline, really was married to Rebecca. Gotta fix that. Thanks. This Samuel has to be Issaac's and Catherine's. That's my side as well, since they were first cousins, but I haven't got much off my direct line. Janet

Jim, thanks! I've tried everything but the * ,so I'll do that. I'm a little fuzzy on the correction census stuff, but now I know it's there, I'll figure it out. So, any other tips to get Mar/Marrs/Mon etc... information? other than ancestry. I google every now and then, and I've found some leads, but my problem always has 3 or so 'Hughs', all numbers of "Williams and John's', no telling how many records are missing, or if they were ever made, so it's down to locations, associations with known married-into families, and history. Knowing, or guessing why they left a particular area, is as great as everything else. I'll keep at it, and I'm glad to see a fellow "Marrs" searcher that's leaving current threads! YeeHaw! Good Luck, Janet

I'm looking for info on Emma M. Stowe. She was born in 1851 Ohio and married Benjamin F. Marrs in Berrien County, MI. Does anyone have more info on Emma? I'm researching the Stowe family. Thanks!

My notes are scattered so I am going from memory.
My husband's grandfather had a brother Franklin. He was born in the late 1850's or early 1860's.
The parents names were James Houston Marrs and Talitha Cumi Landers.
Some of the family lived in Mound City, Kansas and some of the family moved to Texas.

Larry,

Although I do have Aaron Grant Marrs in my database, I can find no connection to Doc Erving Marrs.

I believe that Doc's father was Dockery Jordon Marrs, and his grandfather was Mulkey Watts Marrs (son of Samuel Wayne Marrs and Sarah Mulkey).

As to Aaron's parents, I have them listed as Grant Marrs and Betsy Reece...but with no proof. And I only have Mary C. Marrs as a child of Aaron and Delela Ann (Cruse) Marrs.

Sorry that I can give very little information.

Regards, Janis
