Hi,

I have MARSH ancestors from the Gornal / Gornalwood / Sedgley area. That side of my family lived in the same place - Cooper's Bank, in Lower Gornal - from at least the 1850s until 1986, when my grandparents moved house to live closer to my parents.

My great great great great grandfather was called Joseph Marsh, and he was born in 1811/1812 in Sedgeley. He married his wife Elizabeth (maiden name unknown) sometime before 1836, and they had the following children:

Jane Marsh, chr. 22nd April 1838 in Gornal
Eliza Marsh, born 1839/1840 in Sedgley
William Marsh, chr. 7th May 1843 in Gornal
Elizabeth Marsh, born 1846/1847 in Sedgley
Joseph Marsh, born 1849/1850 in Sedgley
Roseannah Marsh, born 1851 in Sedgley
Daniel Marsh, born 1854/1855 in Sedgley
Mary Marsh, born 1858/1859 in Sedgley



Son Joseph, my great great great grandfather (b.1849, d.1900) married Sarah J TURNER (b.1850, d.1933) and they continued to live at Cooper's Bank. They had the following children:

John Marsh, born 1869/1870 in Sedgley
Elizabeth Marsh, born 1871/72 in Sedgley. Married Joshua Jones, children were called Annie and Joseph.
William Marsh, born 1873/1874 in Sedgley. Married Alice ?, children were called Joseph, Mary and Alice.
Annmaria Marsh, born 1875/1976 in Sedgley
Sarah Ann Marsh, born 1878/1879 in Sedgley
Joseph Marsh, born 1881 in Sedgley. Married Kate Cavell.
Esther Marsh, born 1883/1884 in Sedgley
Harry Marsh, born 1886/1887 in Sedgley



John Marsh, my great great grandfather, was born in 1870 and died on 7th August 1934. He married Rachel Hickman (b.Dec 28th 1871 in Gornalwood, d.April 24th 1953) on 30th June 1930. They had the following children:

Rachel, born November 28th 1890 at Gornal Wood. She married Jack Bradley (b. September 12th 1891) on 25th December 1914.

Sarah Jane (Jenny), b. March 19th 1892. She married Edward Barker (d. December 6th 1928) on 20th December 1914. and subsequently married Jack Parkes.

Joseph, b. August 26th 1893 at Gornal Wood. He married Mary Ann Haddlington (sister of brother Daniel's wife?), who died in 1927. He subsequently married Clarice Baker.

Thomas, b. June 23rd 1895 at Gornal Wood. He married Matilda Parsons. They emigrated to Coburg, Ontraio, Canada, in August 1922.

Daniel, b. May 3rd 1897 at Gornal Wood. He married Beatrice Haddlington in January 1921. They had no children.

John, b. November 15th 1899 at Askew Bridge Road (known as Brick Kiln Lane), Gornal Wood. He married Ivy Armstrong of Oldbury. They emigrated to Trenton, Michigan in the USA in 1924. John died in Trenton on 6th August 1989.

William (Bill), b. February 15th 1901 at Gornal Wood. He married Sarah Gilliam in April 1925. They had no children.

Mary, b. January 23rd 1903, at Gornal Wood. She married Eddie Flohr.

Samuel, b.July 11th 1904 at 2, Saltwells Coppice, Quarry Bank, Brierley Hill. He married Lily Ashman (d.1938) and then married his cousin Rachel Fox in 1939.

Annie, b. June 30th 1907 at 8, Rose Hill, Quarry Bank, Brierley Hill. She married Horace Kirkham (b.August 18th 1905) on July 27th 1929.

Harry, b. July 5th 1909 at 51, Birch Coppice (Bellevue Road), Quarry Bank, Brierley Hill. He married Mary Evans (b. 16th Feb 1911) on Feb 4th 1934.

Harold, b. 10th June 1911 at 70, Birch Coppice (Bellevue Road), Quarry Bank, Brierley Hill. He married Doris Smith (b.Sept 3rd 1909)

Dora, b. 24th March 1914 at 71, Birch Coppice (Bellevue Road), Quarry Bank, Brierley Hill. She married Fred Guest (b.Sept 7th 1916) on 18th August 1939.



Most of this info has been drawn from the following census info. The information about the children of John Marsh and Rachel Hickman comes from research notes made in the 1960s by their son John, who emigrated to the USA.
