I have four brothers, named Harry (who now lives in Australia),Roy, Quentin and Paul Howard as well as one sister, Sharon Dean Cunliffe nee Marsland.
Regenia,

The obit for my Charles E Marsland in New Orleans is pretty much similar to those that were posted by Michael Smith, except that they end with the note "Sing Sing take notice."
Back then many papers sent copy over the telegraph. There was no mention of family again except that he was the husband of Mary Emma Todzwer of New Orleans. Mary would give birth to a daughter, Charline, on 1 Apr, 1874, and Mary would die two weeks later on 14 Apr 1874. Charline would be raised by her maternal grandmother, Sarah Jane Johnson Todzwer. As for Charles, we nothing about his parentage, etc., except that he was born c 1851 in New York.

Rich

Re: Eugene Marsland

Hi Rich -

Got your e-mails.

I went to Ossining once to investigate the Charles Marsland connection.

I have a bunch of news articles from various sources about the Burrill suicide. A tragedy, but I don't find any connection to the Charles E. mystery.

I'm still perplexed by Charles. He appears with the Joshua Marsland family in 1860 and Edward Marsland family in 1870.(He's also listed in New Orleans at the same time - indicating he probably moved right around the time of the census and was double counted).

I have a good chunk of Cora Marsland's family history notes (daughter of Eugene) she appears in the 1870 census with Charles, yet she NEVER Mentions him in her family notes at all - a glaring omission.

Without more info my strongest suspicion is that Edward Marsland may have been married prior to marrying Cora's mother - Sarah Ryder, that his first wife possibly died in childbirth and Charles Edward - the child, was raised by Edward's father Joshua and schooled at a boarding school in Ossining while Edward was serving in the Civil War. I found a possible reference to Charles while trolling online once. "Holbrook's Military High School (NY) [on-line index], New Providence, NJ, 2004 -- Transcribed from: Holbrook's Military High Sch. 1868 Circular, pg. 11." in which a Charles Marsland is identified - I don't know if he was a student there or otherwise just mentioned - the document is identified as a "circular" so I'm not sure what that is. It seems likely he was a student though.

I also know from Cora's letters that Edward's closest brother appears to have been his brother Charles Frederick Marsland. They were both naval engineers and served in the US Navy during the Civil War. The mysterious Charles Edward's name appears linked to both, Edward possibly naming his first born after his brother first and with his own name as middle name? The reference to Charles in the Holbrook circular could also be Charles F. since I know from Cora that Edward as schooled the "academy" in Sing-Sing and thus Charles F. probably was as well, so it could be an alumnus reference. Getting a copy of that document would be helpful.

Cora's omission may have been due to her very strong and somewhat "prudish" views of what was proper and what was not. She was a very opinionated and strong-willed woman as both her letters and my conversations with those who actually knew here indicate. Yet, one of the people she disapproved of most, actually wishing he was not her brother, was her brother Clarence who she accused of bigamy, drinking and shooting a man. She had his companion/"wife's" body removed from the family plot in Ossining after his death when she discovered it upon moving back to Ossining after years teaching in Kansas.

It is her temperament, her almost worship of her father and the very fact of Charles' complete omission in her records that makes me think that Charles may be a half-brother or something similar that she did not want to record for history or somehow viewed as sullying her father's reputation. She mentions other cousins who came to live with them after their parents died - some for years. None had the last name Marsland though so would not be Charles' sibling. Curiously, she also notes that Eugene married a girl 17 years his junior (also said she liked him a lot), that her brother Clarence was a scoundrel - and yet still noted them in her family history notes.

I agree that Charles must be linked to his "uncle" Eugene's brief period in New Orleans. Another brother of Eugene and Edward - William Henry Marsland - also ventured to the South to Sandersville Georgia prior to the Civil War and even served in the Confederate army for a stint, returning to Ossining (appears on 1870 census at father Joshua's house)then moving on to Danbury Connecticut in the 1880's and dying in 1891. So it appears clear that some of the Marslands were looking South for economic opportunities.

About 5 years ago Jean Orser Lupinetti sent me an obit transcript for Charles from the Eastern State Journal, a White Plains NY paper dated Sept 19th 1873

"Charles E. Marsland. Died in New Orleans, Aug. 29, 1873, age 22,
of gastric fever."

In Ossining I found the Sing-Sing Republican obit from 09/11/1873 which states:

"Marsland, Charles E. Died at New Orleans August 29 in his 22nd year. He was formerly of Algiers La. and this village."

So, research areas to pursue that I have not yet done would be Holbrook School records, marriage records for a first Edward Marsland marriage, death of a first Edward Marsland wife, church records relating to that marriage and/or Charles' birth/baptism (most of the Marslands were Methodists).

Oh - and the obit on Euguene you posted is from another branch of the same Marsland family - He is a son of Joshua's brother Stephen's son Isaac of Brooklyn.

- Mike
I wrote you under the email address of fhc2212275, which was some sort of a mixup. In any event I am hoping you had at least read that reply and hopefully this email reaches you. You wrote in 2000 that Eugene committed suicide according to family lore. This reply has nothing to do with Eugene, except there was another suicide reported in the New York Times of 26 Jun 1877. It seems that a Mrs Jane Burrill, an adopted daughter of the sister of Mrs. Edward Marsland of Sing Sing, had killed her seven year old daughter and herself at the home of Mrs. Marsland. Mrs. Burrill was married to a Mr. John Burrill, age 60, of Brooklyn, N.Y. He was in real estate and rarely ever visited Sing Sing. However, Mrs. Burrill and her daughter spent almost all of their time in Sing Sing. Mrs. Burrill was thirty three years old, half her husband’s age. It seems that he had told her that he was filing for divorce and planning on marrying another woman, younger than Mrs. Burrill.

It is also very interesting that Eugene spent time in New Orleans. As I have written before, my great-uncle, Charles E Marsland, lived and married in New Orleans.
See my previous email under fhc2212275 in Ancestry’s surnames for Marsland. My Charles came from “Sing Sing” according to his obit. He died very young and never saw his child. His wife died shortly after childbirth. Her name was Charlene Marsland.

NOTE: There was also an article written by an Alice Marsland in the NY Times about flowers. I don’t know if this is the same Alice you are looking for.

Hope this email gets to you .

Rich Nichols,
Greer, SC
8nicks@bellsouth.net

In 1880 they lived in Racine, WI.
Alice married Zephaniah Parker and had several children in Wisconsin until 1900. She then moved to California and married George A Dake.
Any connections?

Hi
I am researching my ancestors in the Stalybridge/Hyde/Dukinfield area and believe there may be a connection to the families you are reseaching.

I have James Segar m. to Hannah Marsland, their daughter Sarah Ann m. William Hartley. This family then resided in Stalybridge and Dukinfield 1881 -1901.

William Hartley was the son of John Hartley and Sarah Wilkinson.

Does this look familiar.
Thanks
STEVE

Re: Eugene Marsland

Jeanne, et. al.

I have a Charles E Marsland, born ca 1850 in Westchester County, NY.

On the 1870 census he is living in New Orleans, LA, age 19, born NY, clerk at Customs House. On Jan 28, 1872 he married Mary Emma Todzwer at the Mt Olivet Episcopal Church in Algiers, Orleans Parish, LA. They had one child, Charline E, born 1 Apr, 1874. Charles died before Charline's birth on 29 Aug 1873 and his obit stated that "Sing Sing - Ossining take notice." This of course is in Westchester County, NY.

NOTE: Charline Marsland married a Richard DICKSON ca 1898 in either NYC or Westchester County. They resided in the White Plains area of Westchester County. They had one son, Earl Richard born 1899 and who married a Lilyan PURAT. Tbey had no issue.

On the 1850 census for New Castle, Westchester County, I find the following:
Joshua Marsland, age 46, born NY
Charlotte, age 48, ditto
William H, age 17, ditto
Ophelia, age 14, ditto
Lavinia, age 12, ditto
Charles, age 10, ditto
Charlotte, age 6, ditto
James, age 4, ditto

Is Charles, on the 1850 census the same Charles on the 1870 census in New Orleans?

To add to the confusion, on the 1860 Westchester County census for New Castle, we find:

Joshua Marsland, age 56, born England
Charlott C, age 57, born England
Charolette, age 15, born New York
Eugine, age 13, ditto
Charles, age 9, ditto

Jeanne, Is this your Eugene? Besides yourself is there anyone else who is connected to this family? Could the Charles on the 1850 census have died and another son, Charles born to this family?. Any help on connecting Charles E to this family, or any Marsland family from Westchester county will be greatly appreciated.

Rich Nichols,
Greer, SC
Hi,

Hope this mesaage gets to its destination on such an old message-I am interested in Agnes Marsland as I have been trying to determine the relationship of an Agnes Nichols to Cora Marsland of Ossining NY because she is described as a "cousin" and am curious if this Agnes might have become Agnes Nichols. Also, might this be the Agnes Marsland who was involved in the oriental esoteric movement in the early 1900s? Titus is related to "my" branch of the Marslands, albeit way back before emigration to the US. Hope to hear from you - or anyone else with info.

Michael C.
There were Marslands in Charlesworth, Glossop, which is in the area. There is an 1857 directory image on ancestry.com. This shows John Marsland & Bros, cotton spinners. I think one of them was my grandfather's grandfather. There is also an 1841 local census which lists a Hannah Marsland then aged 7. She is the youngest of what looks like 3 sisters appearing on the same page of the census. No older Marslands mentioned on that page (but there are some on a later page).Hope this help

I'm looking for info on Harriet Marsland. She lived in England and m. Thomas Beaumont. One of her children was Samuel Beaumont, b. 1839 in Dewsbury, Yorkshire. He had at least 2 brother-- all 3 of them emigrated to the U.S.A. Please e-mail me if you know anything more!
nobodys_frog@hotmail.com
Thanks! Jessica
