There is a new database [ http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~dickmarston/MARSTON...] MARSTONs of Virginia focused [eventually] upon the first MARSTONS to come to the Virginia colony in the 17th and 18th centuries and their descendants. At present, conclusive evidence of the origin of this branch of the family is lacking, but the early Virginia MARSTONs, we believe, were probably from England.

This database presently [Sept. 2002] includes 254 persons, 129 of whom were born with the MARSTON surname - each with some connection to the State of Virginia. None of these first entries is yet connected to the early colonists. None of the early Virginia colonists is yet included in this database. The MARSTON Genealogy [1888] snubbed these lines entirely. It is hoped that others who have researched these lines will contribute the links which no doubt exist and that this omission can be corrected.

Most of these names were obtained from 19th century cemetery records of Shenandoah county. Many other unconnected MARSTONs were obtained from the Social Security death index for Virginia [all counties]. Most of the Social Security Index individuals have not yet been connected to anyone else. If you know of other on-line sources [or published sources], please share your information in order that I may pursue those, too.

A word of CAUTION: Some of these names have been grouped together as members of one of several MARSTON families of the 19th century. Often there was no evidence of such relationships except tombstone and cemetery records. This information should be verified by independent sources before it is accepted as gospel. The clues which suggest such family relationships vary in degree of liklihood from probable to possible. Help in verifying [or discrediting] this information and assumptions would be appreciated, as well.

If you have additional information or conflicting sources, or if you can
help me to fill in any blanks, I would appreciate your help.
