Marstons and McDonalds/MacDonalds

Last night I watched a program on 'The Battle of Culloden', which reminded me of a note my grandfather had left about our family. He said that the reason my great-grandfather was named 'Arthur McDonald/MacDonald Marston' was that all Highland clans were made to renounce there name on punishment of death. The note says 'This law was passed in 1603, repealed in 1661 and revived in 1693. Due to the Jacobite rising in 1745 clans fled South and lost battle against the English at Marston Moor in Yorkshire hence the name taken by mane clansmen.'

There are many dubious facts in the note. The Battle of Marston Moor was fought in 1644, one hundred years before the end of the Jacobite Rising. However, the was an uprising between 1644 and 1651 as part of The War of the Three Kingdoms.

Just wondered if anyone else knows about a connection with the Clan of Donald?

The last ancestor I know of in my line was William Marston born circa 1790. I know he married Martha King in 1817, Empingham, Rutland.

Dear Joanne

I am related to this family of Tullochs, descended from John Tulloch, master mariner. I think our most recent common ancestor is John Tulloch (b 1794, d 1864), who was deputy registrar of Births Deaths and Marriages for Prahran in Victoria. I am descended from his daughter by his first marriage, Sarah.

I'm afraid I can't help with the name Thorold/Thorald but it appears as a name in two separate branches of the family.

I would be interested in sharing information about the Tulloch family. I don't know much about John's father (also John) the master mariner.

Regards
Steve McDonald

I also have an Eliz Marston, born Oct 28, 1787, Queniborough, Leicester. I do not found a spouse for her, or children - so can not say if she is the same Elizabeth as yours. My Eliz was 1 of 4 children born to Thomas Marston & Elizabeth Wadd.

I have found a Musson line that is separate from my Marston line.
Thomas Musson, 1779, Leicester marry Betty Moore, b 1784 Quorndon, Leicester
I haven't been able to go back before Thomas Musson ( at least not yet), so not sure if Benjamin is in this string. Do you have any children for Benjamin & Ann?

I will have to re-examine the obituary for Frederick, but I now believe that I may have erroneously supplied the name KNIGHT for the surname of Frederick's mother. I believe it may have omitted her maiden name and that I added it later perhaps based upon Tammy's original post. Does anyone have access to a copy of this obituary?

Thanks very much for the clarification. I know that is very presumptuous of me to say so, but I have reason to believe that you have linked the wrong Lincoln MARSTON to Ansel G. MARSTON. Wasn't your grandfather Lincoln married to an Edith in 1940? I am related to the Ansel G. MARSTON family, but the William and Nellie [RICHARDS] MARSTON family has not yet been connected to that William's paternal line.

Since this thread is beginning to become a 2-way conversation between the two of us, I think it would be more productive as well as more in keeping with the rules for message boards if we continue this exchange off-list via email messages. O.K.? My email address is idnnsb@pacbell.net. I look forward to hearing from you.

This MAY be your lucky day. Over the last few days I've photographed and documented 12 interments in the Marston Family Cemetery (Lightfoot, Va.) at find-a-grave
[ http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=22...; ].
It may be that the folks you're looking for are buried there. Also, if you do a search for "Marston" on find-a-grave, you'll find many other Marstons buried in the James City Co. area. Good luck.

Dan Burns

I think that the dates of 1858 and 1927 in the original message refer to William A. Marston (as well as looking for information on HIS parents, not hers, I think). The message is unclear and I, too, thought it meant Nellie. However, when I looked at the 1910 census, William is 58 years old and Nellie is 28, which supports both the original and subsequent messages.

Mary Darington (nee Marston) Hallett b 1841 AL d 1905 Mobile AL

MOBILE REGISTER - 11 FEBRUARY 1905

MRS. ROBERT W. HALLETT

Under subdued lights in her draped parlors on St. Louis Street, folded in the spotless robes of death, is sleeping a woman whose memory links us back to the golden era of the old South, the brightest page of Southern social and historic grandeur. Gentle time, ever considerate of the dead, seems to have pushed the dial back and under his gentle touch, she appears young and beautiful.
Mary Darlington Marston, wife of Colonel Robert W. Hallett, who died yesterday, was the only daughter of Charles A. Marston and Charlotte James, two typical Southern families of the old regime. The writer recalls her as one of the gentlest and sweetest flowers of young Southern womanhood, an ony daughter, reared in luxury, love and tender graciousness, she was as modest as she was beautiful, and like young Southern girls of her period, she rather shrank from than embraced the adoration which came to her by right of endowment. No dreams of Bohemian princess was necessary to bring her to her vision of what was in reality spread before her. In early life she became the wife of Robert W. Hallett, the son of fortune, whose father had built up and presided over the old Bank of Mobile, the same Doric building presenting the front of Hotel Windsor on Royal and Conti Streets. For some time the young couple resided in New York, where the Halletts possessed large holdings, but they soon returned to Mobile to share the fortunes of their country, their people, and their friends, sad fortunes indeed, were those which came in the wake of war, pestilence, and reconstruction, but these things affected not the brave woman of the South, and the young matron bowed not save to duty and to God. The blue blood in her gentle veins asserted its supremacy, over adversity, hers was the same gentle, calm nature under all conditions and surroundings, and she lived and died an illustrious type of Southern womanhood, the supremest, the noblest, that ever adorned the world's social history.
Mrs. Hallett is survived by her husband, Colonel Robert W. Hallett; Lillie, Jennie, and Belle Prichett, daughters; Winthrop, Thomas, and Robert Hallett, Jr., sons; and two brothers, Captains John W. and Samuel J. Marston.
Mrs. Hallett's life was made more eventful by the eventual period through it ran. Such lives are fast passing the stage of existence; but these events changed not the tenor of that life, neither the splendors of affluence, the storms nor devastation of war, more than the quiet pathway of domestic peace affected that life, for it rested on the eternal rock of duty, duty as the faithful and living wife, duty as the affectionate mother, duty as the gentle friend. Her unheralded charities are deeply engraved in the hearts of the poor. She possessed to an eminent degree, those virtues of the old regime, pride, courage, resignation, unfaltering faith and hope, and her life was beautiful. On the history of that life, no less than on her pale, sweet face resting in death, appears undelibly written those words divinely spoken:"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God."

Not my family, just sharing from the newspaper archives of the Mobile Public Library.

William A Marston 1858-1927 is my Great-grandfather he married Nellie E. Knight I haven't been able to find the microfilm yet with their Marriage Cert.
In the 1920 census my grandfather Lincoln is mentioned along with their youngest child Frederick. I have followed the census back and linked my great-grandfather with Ansel G. Marston as his father.
Believe it or not there was 2 Nellie Marston's living in Portland at the same time in the 1930 census you can view both my great-grandmother was living on Vine st. with Frederick. The other was living at 769 Congress St. she was a Richards.
I would like to find a birth certificate or marriage certificate for William A.
Time out, folks!

Let's not forget that this is a message board intended for use by those with an interest in matters dealing with genealogy for MARSTONs, etc, especially those matters dealing with research problems.

The identities of the query poster and the responder are NOT issues here. Either we have information that may help the researcher, or we don't. Either we have sources to back-up our help, or we don't. Either we are willing to help, or we're not.

Ancestry.com has no listing for a Kent M. MARSTON in either the USA or the British Isles. It does have a Kent M. MARSTEN, age 70, who was married in Minnesota in 1961 and divorced there in 1972. It also has current listings for this fellow in three different cities of North Carolina.

A search for a Becky BARTHOLOMEW produces vastly different results, but suffice it to say that none is connected with a MARSTON or a MARSTEN, and none is a Becky A. BARTHOLOMEW. Search results for a Rebecca BARTHOLOMEW produces too many hits for me to count.

None of this may be at all relevant to the original query which, as I indicated in my first response, is too vague and needs more specifics.

Dick Marston
Simi Valley, CA, USA
Anna,
You have perhaps already found John and his family in the 1851 UK Census? John's age is given as 39, and Martha was reported as being age 38 at the time. John's occupation was that of a "Common Brewer Malster, Merchant employing men". His place of birth was reported as "Lincolns Swineshead". Martha's pob was reported as "D Market Deeping". The family was living 51 Marketplace, Market Deeping parish. Their four children were then Mary [4], Charlotte [2], Charles [1], and Walter [1 mo.]. Also living in their household was a brewer's pupil, a clerk, three household servants, and a nurse. He was a bit affluent, I would say.

John and Martha may have divorced, or else Martha died, because in 1861 he was the head of household with no wife and no children. He still employed four live-in servants, and his occupation was listed as merchant. His home was then in Holdingham, Lincolnshire. Martha may have remarried because I could not find her in 1861. Charles [11] and Walter [10]. on the other hand were at boarding school in Market Deeping that year. Mary [14] and Charlotte [12], on the other hand, were students living with a slightly older Eliza Marston [20], "Maltster and Brewers Daur" [sic], in the household of John and Sarah Cole of Market Deeping, Lincolnshire.

In 1881 he, John Taylor Marston [69], was living in Old Quarrington parish near Sleaford, Lincolnshire on his farm of 396 Acres, where he was enumerated as "Farmer, Maltster, Wine & Spirit Merchant" employing 14 laborers & 3 "boys". His spouse at the time was Clare [39], and their three daughters were Gertrude [10], Evelyn [8], and Rosetta [4]. He then employed 4 live-in servants.

Query: Might he have founded the brewery now known as Marston Thompson and Evershed, PLC [Marston's], of Burton upon Trent, Leicestershire? [I LOVE their Pedigree Bitter!]

Dick Marston
Simi Valley, CA, USA

Thanks, Susan. The William and Nellie that you found in the 1910 Census can also be found with more children in the 1920 Census. The 1920 Census answers my question about the Frederick W. MARSTON whose obituary I mentioned. This was his his family, and in 1920 he was then their youngest child. I believe that I have also found their marriage record in Maine, and, if so, William "N." [sic] MARSTON of Portland, ME, married Nellie "S." [sic] RICHARDS of Falmouth, ME, on 9 Jan 1901. Except for the middle initials, this couple appears to be an excellent match for the family found in 1910 and 1920. Now, for the $64 questions: Who were their parents? I'm working on it, but so far I'm not having any luck. [BTW, Ancestry's "Maine Marriages, 1892-1996" records the marriages of 7 Nellie KNIGHTs from 1895 to 1955, but none of these married a MARSTON.]
Pardon me, but how is it that a woman who remarried in 1931 died in 1927? Would either of you happen to have a reliable source or sources you'd be willing to share with us? If you are both correct, then I respectfully suggest that your dates seem to identify two different Nellie's. An Obituary in Foster's Daily Democrat on 22 Jan. 2002, identifies the parents of the deceased, Frederick W. MARSTON, b. 21 Aug. 1919, d. 20 Jan 2002 in Somersworth N.H., as William and Nellie [KNIGHT] MARSTON. Is this a third Nellie [KNIGHT] MARSTON whose husband happens to be a William? Is either of you looking for info. about the marriage of the couple referred to in the obit. as Frederick's parents? If so, a Nellie born in 1858 would have been 61 in 1919. She'd more likely be Fred's grandmother, if she's related to him at all. Evidence anyone?

I am a direct decendant of Russell Marston (b. 1816), one of the Marstons you indicated being interested in. Briefly my connection is thus: Russell is my great great grandfather. The line is: Russell, Howard, Shirley, Russell and myself, Peter. I live in Connecticut and would be happy to answer any questions. I inherited a genealogy that my grandfather, Shirley commissioned which also traces back the female sides all the way back to the original John of Salem. Please e-mail me at pmarston@snet.net

Point taken. It was not my intent to abuse the system. I was just shocked to see a query about my husband and me when googling something entirely different. To clarify, Kent M. MarstEn m. to Becky Ann(no E)Bartholomew currently live in Ashe County, North Carolina.

Thank you Dick. In answer to your query, as far as i know he was not part of that brewery, but he did start a brewery in Poole in Dorset called Dolphin Marston Brewery, but this must have been in the time between census's as none of them state that he lived in Poole Dorset, but i know he did, as this is the area i now live, and i have pictures to prove this. Walter was involved along with Charles.

Thank you again,
Anna

Re: Dwight C. Marston

Dwight Cliftin Marston is my grandfather. He was married to Madeline S. Brownfield between 1910 & 1913 and had two children. According to the 1920 Census he was married to a Mary Jane and had a 13 yr. old son named Eliott. I'm assuming he had been married to Mary Jane prior to 1910 had Eliott, married Madeline Brownfield than went back to Mary Jane.
I lost tack of him after that. Hope you can help fill in the blanks.
Thank you.
