I do not have any information related to your search, but wanted to share that I recently learned that I am connected, in some way, to the Martels from Alsace Lorraine. I'm hitting a road block though-- and you may be able to help.

Here is what I know: Caroline Whalen (married name) was born in about 1839, and arrived in the US at about the age of 12 in 1851. She had her first and only child by 1860.

Family lore says that she was a dancer in a traveling troop (we have her traveling trunk still). I'm not sure if Martel is her maiden name, or a name from a first (and short) marriage.

She remarried later in life to a Connell.

Family lore also says that she lost one of her husbands in an avalanche-- although no one knows which one.

She lived, mostly, in the Magnolia area of Harford County, losing her farm for non-payment of taxes.

I'm mostly hoping to determine if Martel was a married name (which wouldn't require further research on my part, since I wouldn't be a direct descendant) or a maiden name. Can you help?

Could be, but given that they were all born just after the turn of the 19th century, the timing may not work. I'm 42 and one of the children on the list is my grandfather. My gr-gr-gr grandfather was born around 1845.

In any event, do you happen to know more about Naziare and who his parents were? This family moved from Quebec to North Battleford. Perhaps Naziare's family was related and they had contact after they moved.

Yes, they were Catholics. It looks like they came from Ireland to France. Some stayed in France and many came to the United States. Many divided and went to the different States. Some stayed in New York area.

I remember my mother saying that her grandmother had red hair and I thought green eyes. I could be wrong on the eyes, but I know they were suppose to be light. My email is brattycotton@yahoo.com. I will email a photo of what I believe is a Martel and you can show it to some of your relatives and see if he looks familiar. One thing they did have were ears that sorta stuck out. You will see by the picture. Email me and I will email it to you. Bye

Yes, I can relate to the confussion. My great grandfather was Rafael Mirada. His mother was a Martel I believe. He was born in Arizona in 1850. Found in the California Census in 1880. He named his last son, Samuel Martel Miranda. Rafael had red hair and green eyes and had a light complection. My grandfather was Ernest Miranda, he had a red beard and mustache and very light. He had a brother Samuel Martel, Frank,James, and sisters named Francisca,Conception/Chonita,and Carrie. They are all gone now.

These are the Martel's that came from Ireland to the United States in the early 1800's I believe. All the Martel's went in different directions, some stayed in France, England, Canada, they spread out everywhere.

My name is Mary Ellen, named after a great, great grandmother.

Well, as my grandfather Miguel Martell Armas (1906-1987) used to tell me all Martells are related, but according to him, his father Antonio Martell, was born in Canary Islands (Spain) and he came to Cuba as a young man trying to scape from the war in Spain, he settled in Encrucijada, in the former province of Las Villas, actual Villa Clara, they were brothers and sisters among some of them: Chongo (name unknown), Maria, Caridad, Juana , Matilde, Blanca, Lorenza (died in USA), Bernardo, y Miguel, well just wondering if there is any coneccion.
Greetings,
Hiran Martell

I am also a decendant of the Martel line. I have the direct lineage to France
that was done by the Maine Franco-American Genealogical Society. It was aquired
by a cousin who is also researching our family tree. It starts with my cousin's
marriage back to the marriage of Jean Martel-Lamontagne and Marie Duchesne. If
you need any info for any of the marriages in between these (begining in 1963)
back to 1668 I would be happy to help. They are for the male Martel line only.

April

Wow, looks like you've done alot of work!! In all your research, have you come across a man that delt with the Martel's that came from Alsace, migrated to Russia, then to America? I was in touch with such a man (can't even remember his name - it was so long ago) who put together a book on the Martel's that decended from Dewald Martel. I would like to re-connect with him to compare notes. I have since then found Dewald's parents and g-parents. Thanks!

Re: BIRTHS ~ ~ La Sarre, Quebec Listing from Bulletin de la Societe Historique Abitibiene

Sandra,

Start with what you know...yourself & which ever parent of yours was the child of Zenon. Look at the location where Zenon was with your grandmother when your parent was born. Ask your parent and any of his/her siblings about your grandfather - there will be nuggets of information in the reminising.

Do you know where and approxiamtely when Zenon was born? Where did he die? Quebec or US? I don't know about getting death certificates from Canada other than Manitoba which has an on line ordering service so I can't tell you much regarding that but a DC should have Zenon's birth date and parents and possibly the name of the cemetery he his buried in. From what I found below, if these things are your grandfather, then he died in MA and relatively recently. His DC might have the name of the funeral home on it, too. You might be able to contact the funeral home and get a copy of his record which might also give you parents, siblings and children.

Once you know his parents you can search farther back either on Ancestry (or one of the other sites), at the American French Genealogical Society AFGS or from films at a local Family History Center.

If you are within traveling distance of Rhode Island, there is a fabulous resource for those tracing their French Canadian ancestry called the American French Genealogical Society on Earle St. in Woonsocket. They seem to have just about any and everything regarding French Canadian records. Their web site is http://www.afgs.org/ I think they will do limited look-ups but for extensive research, you would have to visit them.

Try Googling your individual's names and you might find a family site with a tree that contains your grandfather. Also try familysearch.org but realize that not too many Catholics seem to appear in their databases other than 1880's censuses and IGI's taken from filmed records. And also that if information says member supplied it may or may not be 100% correct.

Ancestry is another good place to start looking but a large portion of their databases are by subscription only. However, you can get around that by doing a 14 day free trial to start. Later on as you learn more, you may decide to get a subscription of some sort.

All three of the big genealogy sites are run by My Family.com...Ancestry.com, Genealogy.com and Rootsweb.com. Rootsweb is free content including the Social Security Death Index which you would have to pay for on Ancestry or Genealogy.

Once you learn where in Quebec your family comes from, you can go to familysearch.org and under the library tab search to see what records the Mormons filmed. These films can be borrowed from Salt Lake through your local Family History Center and researched at the FHC. You can also locate a FHC near you under the library tab -Family History Centers.

I have a full subscription to Ancestry, so I quickly ran Zenon and found:
SSDI - Zenon Martel SSN: 028-26-8779
Last Residence: 01550 Southbridge, Worcester, Massachusetts, United States of America
Born: 22 Nov 1894 Died: Jul 1985
State (Year) SSN issued: Massachusetts (1951-1952 )

MA Death Index - Zenon Martel
Certificate: 036998
Death Place: Southbridge
Death Date: 23 Jul 1985
Birth Place: Massachusetts
Birth Date: 22 Nov 1894

I would send for his DC. Google MA death certificate to find the gov't site for MA DC's; you have the DC# which should make things easier. DC might have what cemetery he was buried in.

Then you could search for the cemetery on Find A Grave. If it's there and Zenon isn't entered into the cemetery, enter him and what you know then request a photo. A volunteer may take the request, do a pic and post the photo of the headstone which should give you your grandmother's info and might even reveal a child or two that you didn't know about who might have lived but a few months or years.

1930 US Census -dist. 13, Exeter, Rockingham, New Hampshire
Zenon R Martell 35y, married 21yrs, b. This time however Zenon's parents are listed as French Canadian. He is an office clerk at the optical works. He must have worked at the old American Optical which had a huge facility in Southbridge at one time.

1900 this might be Zenon and his parents, seems like a good match: Massachusetts > Worcester > Southbridge > District 1678 Pine St.
Martel, R*****gue, b. So, assuming that who ever filled in the census or whatever other record you are searching actually got the name spelled correctly; if you can't find the name as you know it to be, think creatively and look at what poorly formed letters might also be interpreted as.

I hope this gives you a bit of a start.

Re: EDWARD J. MARTEL aka MEDA MARTEL

Edward J. Martel is also known as MEDA MARTEL. He is listed in the 1910 Census (Pawtucket, R.I.); in the 1920 Census (Troy City, New York); and in the 1930 Census (Newark, N.J.).

His wife is Emily B. --- her maiden name is Sosville.
This is her second marriage. They have a son named Felix and his nickname was Bunny.

I am not positively sure, but I think his father is FELIX MARTEL, listed in the 1880 Census for St. Albans, Vt. MEDA is listed as age 7 and as a daughter. The daughter listing could be an error unless MEDA is a female and male name.

Any additional information would be greatly appreciated.

Eileen Cleckner

Re: Martel / Martell in CUBA

Hello Dania -
I searched my records for any of the names listed and did not find any one in common. My grandfather's name was Liborio and Grandmother was Hermina Rodriguez Martell. They had the following children: Francisco, Ernesto, Argelia, Maria, Caridad, and Hernaldo Martell Rodriguez. Their children's names are: Caridad, Mercedes, Ernesto, Enrique, Luis, Miguel, another Enrique, Jose, Jorge and Beatriz.
From what I gather, most if not all records were destroyed in the war of 1800something and authorities relied on the locals to provide information on who was who. That is were the problem is. Alot of that information is not available and what is can only be questioned. Cuba as you know is not a place we can travel to and gather the needed records to complete our "tree". I do have a cousin who has a bit more info than I do. I need to pick his mind in hopes of having more available for all. I grew up always being told that all those "Martel or Martell's" from Cuba came from the same line. The story is that in early 1800, a pastor from France named Martell came to Cuba to spread the word of "God" and fell in love with a local girl. If you have additional information; please pass it on. Good luck, Beatriz
