Michele,
I just read your post 8 years later and have much information on Gerd Martens- my great great grandfather. Born on 1/5/1822 in Rhade, Germany, emigrated to the US in 1842 and became very prosperous in the sugar refining business in NYC (partner in the North River Sugar Refinery). There is much information on this corportation in the New York Times archive. Gerd owned a large estate in Mt. Vernon, NY where he formed the Chester Hill Land Company which developed the south end of Mt. Vernon. Gerd died on 5/3/1893 and he is in Woodlawn Cemetary with his wife (Clara Mary Lohman- died at 61 yo), and children (several of whom died before 1 years of age). Those who lived into adulthood were Charles Clarence 26 yo, Edward 50 yo, William 62, and Margret 82.

Let me know if this informtation has been of help.

Art

Looking for any information about August H. Martens who died in 1865 according to the inscription in a Bible given to him in 1848 by my Great Grandfather, Johann Georg Kurz (John George Kurtz). After Mr. Martens death the Bible was given back to my Great Grandfather and then in 1902 passed on to my Grandfather, John J. Kurtz. My Great grandfather was living in Whetstone Township, Crawford County, near Bucyrus and Galion, Ohio in the mid 1800's but so far I've been unable to find out who August H. Martens was or why this rather large Bible would have been given to him by my Great Grandfather. Any input will be appreciated.
