PHOTOS: Chas J. Marth b. 1873 IL, wife Louisa, & Helen, Irene, Lucile, Mildred of Alton, IL & St. Louis, MO

I recently bought a small group of photos. Some of the photos are identified as Helen and Irene MARTH on Central Avenue in Alton, IL. I believe these are the children of Charles Marth b. March 1873 IL and his wife Louisa b@1871 Germany and had children Helen, Irene, Lucile, and Mildred.

1900 Census finds Charles Marth, Louisa, and daughters Helen and Irene living in Okaw, Shelby County, IL. Helen was born Oct 1897 and Irene was born Feb 1900.

1910 Census find Charles J. Marth, age 37, working as a machinist for a glass factory and living with his family at 1225 Central Avenue in Alton, IL. Two photos are taken at this location. The family includes wife Louisa, and daughters Helen, Irene, and Lucile.

1920 Census finds Charles Marth, age 46, working as a foreman of a box factory and living at 4200 Botanical Street in St. Louis, MO. His family includes wife Louisa and daughters Helen, Irene, Lucile, and Mildred.

There are 16 photos in this collection. Many were taken by photographers in Bunker HIll, IL. I believe there are photos of Charles and Louisa Marth. One also includes an Uncle Louis.

I also have the death certificate for Louisa Schaum Marth who died of pneumonia on 5 April 1922. Her parents are listed as Matthias Schaum of Germany and Dorothy Schimp of Germany. She was buried in Salem Cemetery.

The death certificate for Charles J. Marth of 4200 Botanical lists his death as a result of a cerebral Hemorrhage and cardiac disease. He is listed as a retired machinist for Watlow Electric Co. It says he was born in Prairie Town, IL on March 2, 1873. His wife is listed as Lydia. His parents are listed as Peter Marth and Marie. Marie's surname may be Schoenewise or Schoeneweiss. Charles is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in St. Louis, MO.

I would like to connect this collection of photos with a family member or family researcher.

Please contact me if you have an interest in this set of photos.

Kathy@FamilyWeSearch.com

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding, and welcome into the extended Marth family!

I have no idea about the specifics of your fiance's family, you may need to do a little research on your own first, based on knowledge of perhaps his grandfather. Finding him on census records may be one of the first places to start to find clues to piecing your puzzle together.

My Marth family came from near Leipzig, in the Kingdom of Saxony (Sachsen) in present day Germany. They settled in the area around Concordia Missouri in the late 1800s (sorry, going from memory in case that is not 100% correct -- but I think that is all right).

So, we'll look forward to hearing what you find, and if your husband-to-be will tie in with anyone on the message board and mailing list. Happy digging!

I am marrying a Marth in 8 days! I was wondering if anyone could help me with some information. My fiance's name-Steven Alexander Marth III, his dad is Steven Alexander Marth II, and his grandfather is the first. I'm looking for who would be Steve's (the first) dad. Also, I'm not even sure where this surname comes from. I have heard France and Hungary.

I don't know when he immigrated, but it had to be between the years 1862(his birth year)to about 1880 when me married Mary Seiler(1865-1937) William's father was also named William.
William, my grandfather had a son named John(1883-1937) This info for John does not fit with the dates for your John(1839-1894)that you mentioned, unless your dated are in error. You mentioned that John or Johann is your husbands great grand father. Allowing 30 years for each generation, your husband would have to be born about 1930. If that is correct that would tend to verify the dates for your John (1839-94).
There remains another possibility, your John could be an uncle of my grandfather. There seems to be too many years (23) between the dates of birth of your John and my grandfather for them to be brothers.
I would appreciate getting any info that you discover about the Marths in Forrestville. Also, please let me know if my estimate of your husbands birth year is correct.
By the way, I was born in 1934.

I'm Ernest's cousin and also doing the family tree. I have yet to locate a John, even though someone I have been talking to thinks that a found John Marth is a brother of William Marth 1827-1903 and was Married to Fredricke Hinz. If this sounds familiar, please contact me directly at breemoy@concentric.net

Marths in Germany and Central Missouri

Greetings and welcome to the MARTH message board and mailing list. I just took on the role of administrator for both, and wanted to introduce myself and hopefully generate some renewed interest in our MARTH research!

First of all, the "gateway" function has been enabled so that postings to the message board are automatically sent to the MARTH-L mailing list. See http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/m/marth.html for more information about the mailing list.

To give you some background, my interest in the Marth family has been very recent. My mother was adopted from an orphanage as a young girl, and knew nothing of her biological family for 65 years. We began doing some research a few years ago, and finally made several big breakthroughs last year. She was recently able to meet and spend time with an older brother and sister that she never knew existed. It was a wonderful experience!

We learned that we are descendants of Frank Herman MARTH (1857 - 1937), who was born in Germany and immigrated to the US, settled in Lafayette County, Missouri, and married Mathilde Auguste Caroline LUECK (1863 - 1930) in 1887. A good amount of information exists on this family, which includes descendants with the following surnames: FRICKE, LEAS, SCHOLLE / SCHOLLIE, and VON HOLTEN. I would definitely enjoy hearing from others with connections to this family.

Best wishes, and happy digging!

Brett in Oregon
As for Johann I am going by what it said on his tombstone in Forrestville, buried next to his wife, Caroline. Yes, Johann is my husbands great grandfather. And, my husband was born in 1952 (few years different from your estimate). We have very-very little to go on the Marth family. I am working with other Marth researchers on this mystery. You can e-mail me personally at flrlkpsk@nconnect.net and we can communicate more on the Marths. Mary Hasslinger

I am finding Zirbels and Marths in Forestville, Wisconsin. Evelyn was the daughter of Oskar Zirbel (b December 1877) and Elisabeth (b September 1880). Do you have information that you would be willing to share on the Marth or possibly Zirbel family tree? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
