Gillespie Identifies Body Found in Canal As Missing Janitor
Two weeks of searching for the missing John Martina, 65-year old janitor of the Republic Light, Heat and Power Co. here, ended when a body drawn from the Barge Canal at the head of the old locks this morning was identified as that of the missing man by North Tonawanda Police chief Norris E. Gillespie.
Gillespie made his identification at the Taylor and Reynolds Funeral Home, Lockport, where the body was taken after lock employees had discovered it. Fred Strebe and Daniel Evans, officials of the Republic Co., meanwhile, were rushing to Lockport to confirm Gillespie's identification.
Thus ends a search which began shortly after Martina disappeared on Nov. 7. Officials of Republic began a private search for him, then, when it proved fruitless, called upon North Tonawanda Police for aid. Police dragged the Barge Canal and the Niagara River in this area without success. In addition, they flashed an alarm to all Western New York police departments. The Lockport police notified them this morning, when the body was discovered.
Frank Reynolds, of the Taylor and Reynolds Funeral Home, said today that the body was in very bad condition. The skin was coming off the body, and it was bloated. He said the body was that of a man about 65 years of age, somewhat over five feet in height, and weighing about 100 pounds. At the time of Reynold's statement, the coroner had not yet made his examination.
