Hi Bev:

I am a descendent of Benejah Bennett Martindale Sr. daughter Mary P. Martindale.

What I have on
1 Thomas and Lucy Martindale is --

2 Bennet Martindale b. circa 1791 married Mary Pierce I have two children for Bennet and Mary they are H. S. and Bennet Martindale who married Mary.

2 John Martindale b 20 Feb 1795 Crown Point Essex County New York d 15 Oct 1866 Caistor Twp Niagara County Ontario Canada married Diania Harris John and Diania had 13 children Emily who married Meil McLean, Infant that died at age 4 days, Clarrysa married Jerry Clendenen, Lucy married Daniel Sprinsteen, Thomas Harris married Margaret Culp, William married Delilah Burtch, John, Henry married Phoebe Briscoe, Dianna died age 1 year 2 months, Mara unknown if married or died young, Abraham married Frances Calp/Culp, Isaac married Hannah Sixsmith, and Theadore Dorwin married Roda Oglivie.
John was appointed along with 40 other males as a Hog Hayward at the annual March meeting held at Orwell, Vermont on the 12th day of March 1816. This is an honorary appointment as Hayward is a term which originally meant the person who kept one person`s pigs out of another`s hay. The term `hog reeve` was occasionally used. These were officials elected yearly at the town meeting held the first Tuesday in March to keep track of stray animals. Possibly as a way of instilling humour into the yearly meeting which was often fraught with controversy, new bridegrooms were often chosen for that position in Vermont since they had `corralled the wandering sows.` A person would have had to sit through a yearly town meeting which was trying to exercise democracy on a local level to understand why those in the past needed this levity, at the bride`s expense, amidst serious problems. The practice seemed to have decreased sometime during the 1830`s. If a man`s name is found on the list of haywards for that year, but he wasn`t sworn into that position, it is a strong indication that he was married after the first Tuesday in March in the preceding year.

John, Dianna and family lived in Caistor Township, Lincoln, Ontario in 1851. Little is known about them at this time other than they listed their religion as Tunker on the 1851 Census and eight of their children were still living with them. John was a farmer and their sons, Thomas, John, and Henry were labourers.
John purchased Lot 10 Concession 3 Caistor Township, Lincoln, Ontario from Jacob and Ann Bush on February 2, 1854 for Two Hundred Pounds lawful money of Canada. Lynda Pattison, Judy Jevne, Bev McConnell and Ruth Robb had the joy of locating this house in the summer of 1998. The house is still on Lot 10, Concession 3 in Caistor. With the exception of an addition at the back of the house it looks the same as it did over a hundred and thirty years ago. We saw the rooms they would have played, laughed, worked and cried in. It was very moving and exciting. The present day owners, Lynn and Dale Deavu told us how the house at one time stood back further on the property but at some time it was moved up to the front of the property on logs.
John along with Dianna, Abram, Isaac, and Theodore are recorded on the Lincoln County 1861 Caistor Township Census as living in a 1 ½ story frame house.
After John`s death Dianna with the two youngest children, Isaac and Theodore, moved in with Dianna`s older son, Thomas Martindale and his family. Isaac and Theodore were probably helping Thomas on the farm as they were all listed as farmers in the 1871 Census.(Research):«b»Title: «u»«/b»History of Niagara (in part) : with fifty illustrations
«/u»«b»Author: «u»«/b»Carnochan, Janet «/u»
«b»Publisher: «/b»Toronto, Ontario: William Briggs, 1914

Pg 148

In 1830 John Graham and John Martindale, of Niagara brewery, advertised for twenty thousand bushels of barley.

Pg 209

`Fountain of Health.
Thank you for posting this information. I am researching the Martindale family starting with Thomas & Lucy Martindale. They are Benajah Bennet's parents.

Have you been able to find out exactly where he died. I had that he died in Vermont also (source was Howard Martindale - Aug 1999 (Letter from The University of the State of New York), Martindale Bible - Mrs. M. Edna Martindale Underwood.) It does make sense that he died in Michigan as I have that Anna died in Cato, Montcalm County, Michigan(source Anna Martindale's Certified Copy of Records of Death sent by Wendy Van Epps).

What part of the line are you descended from?

I'm descended through John & Dianna (Harris) Martindale.
Their son Isaac Martindale married to Hannah Sexsmith
Their son James Martindale married to Etta Mabel Crankshaw
Their son Allan Eugene Martindale married to Vivian Fettes
I am Beverley Cheryon Martindale McConnell

I have been researching Thomas & Lucy Martindale for quite a few years and I'm hoping that someone has information of where Thomas came from.

Thank you so much for the website address. I really appreciate it. I do see one error, in case you're interested. Thomas Martindale (23) was married to Lydia Bolieu. I'm responsible for the error because years ago I made an assumption thinking her surname was Insco and turned it in that way to the Genealogical Helper. I try not to assume anymore.
Their youngest sibling was born Abt. 1763 so Riley must be in the next generation. I'm sorry, but I don't have Riley in my database. I see there is a Riley Martindale in several census from Tippah, Mississippi. Good luck in your search.

Barbara Chenoweth was born 3 September, 1802, in Frederick County, Virginia as were many other family members. The Chenoweth family has been well documented. Barbara Chenoweth Martindale was not in Indiana until after she married. She was married in Warren County, Ohio. She died in Marshall County, Indiana but was not born in Indiana. She and Jesse are buried in Jacoby Cemetery, Marshall County, Indiana alongside a daughter Emma Lucy Martindale and her husband Isariah Stone.

A word of warning is not to trust what you find on a lot of family trees and genealogies on the internet. There are many errors and many have no documentation so the mistakes continue to perpetuate.

The listing of "Barbary" is in actuality Barbara Chenoweth, wife of Jesse Martindale.

Re: Martin N. Martindale vs. Martin Herbert Martindale

The information you provided is very similar to what I have for Martin Herbert Martindale, a brother of my great grandmother Amanda Ellen Martindale. They were children of Jesse Martindale and Barbara Chenoweth.

Although the information I have says that he was born in Wayne County, Indiana, the family lived in Warren County, Ohio before going to Indiana so this could be incorrect. I show Martin as the oldest. A sister Hannah, the 5th child) was born in Warren County, Ohio according to her death record from Wabash County, Indiana. (I have a copy of that).

I also show that Martin Martindale was married first to Anna Guyer who died in 1842. She is buried in Chili Cemetery, Miami County, Indiana. Cemetery information was the source of her date of death. I have a picture of her grave there. He married Polly Cady in November 1847 in Miami County, Indiana according to court records in Peru, Indiana. She died before 1900.

Census information I have shows 1830 that he was in Wayne County, Indiana with Jesse and Barbara in the 6-10 year age category. Following that:
1840 Census, (20 Years) - Richland, Miami, Indiana (with parents)
1850 Census, 30 years - Richland, Miami, Indiana (with Polly)
1860 Census, 39 years - , Fayette, Texas (with Polly)
1870 Census, 50 years - Rock Creek, Cowley, Kansas (with Polly)
1880 Census, 59 years - Rock Creek, Cowley, Kansas (with Polly)
1900 Census, 79 years - Maple, Cowley, Kansas (with George Kimsey & Clara) (widowed).

Census records for Polly show the same path as Martin's.

Maybe someone else has an explanation for Martin N and Martin Herbert?

It sounds like Martin N Martindale and Martin Herbert Martindale could be one and same unless researchers have gotten confused.

Re: Website Of 9 Generation Of Martindale Family

Another believed correction for the website listed:

#65, Hannah Martindale - marriages:
(1) William Jett, about 1842
(2) John Pursley, 26 February, 1861
(3) George M Brown , 26 September 1881

From records and information found, it is not possible for this Hannah Martindale to have been the same Hannah Martindale who married Jacob Abbott in 1851. I believe this to be an error that has been prpetuated. According to records, there were 9 Jett children. The 6th child Amanda Jett was born February 1852. In her obituary it states that she was the daughter of Hannah Martindale and William Jett. William Jett died in 1859 according to cemetery records and his death notice. When Hannah married John Pursley in 1861, her name was given as Hannah Jett (and not Hannah Abbott). In the John Martindell, Cordwainer, Book, only the 3 marriages are given for Hannah, not 4. Records indicate this is probably correct. There were several Hannah Martindales, and from the documents found, the one who married Jacob Abbott was probably another one. I have 8 Hannah Martindales in my database, and I know there were more that I have not yet listed.

Re: Martin N. Martindale vs. Martin Herbert Martindale

K, I am very new to this. I found my dad's genealogical papers for the Ford side of my family, but he did not have time to do the kimsey side before he died. I have mostly gathered information from the internet. I do not know what happened to the infromation on this side of the family. I'm afraid it's been thrown away. All the information is from stories that my father and great uncle told me as a child.

My paternal grandmother's family was from Rock, KS. She was named for Clara Belle Martindale. Her name was Clara Kimsey Ford Haylor. I remember going to see my great uncle, Lewis Kimsey, and favorite aunt, Edith Kimsey, in Arkansas City as a child. I also remember going to a cememtery when I was really young that had several relatives, but I did not know what it was called and did not remember who was there. I went to findagrave.com and typed in my great-great aunt's name, Doris Kimsey, (Clara Belle's daughter). This is a free site. It had a picture of her gravestone. I had been told that Martin had lived with Clara Belle right before he died, but the Kansas Census Collection from 1905 as well as the 1900 US Census listed him as living there as well. I typed in his name at findagrave.com and didn't get anything, but did look under the cemetery name, Star Valley Cemetary, Udall, Cowley County, Kansas. It listed M N Martindale (Martin N Martindale), P A Martindale (Polly Ann Cady Martindale), C B Kimsey (Clara Belle Martindale Kimsey), G W Kimsey (George W. Kimsey, Clara's husband) and William H. Kimsey, Clara Belle's son. Only Martin, Doris, and William's grave has a picture attached unfortunately.

It's interesting to note that Martin listed his mother's (Barbara Chenoweth) birthplace as Virginia in the 1900 US Census which is different from what most genealogies list. It is also listed as VA in the 1850 Census, but her name was Barbary.

http://content.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx=View&r=an&dbi...

Martin N. Martindale vs. Martin Herbert Martindale

I am very new at this and a little confused. My great-great-great grandfather's name was Martin N. Martindale. His wife's name was Polly. He is buried in Star Valley Cemetary, Udell, Cowley County, KS. There is even a picture of his gravestone on FindAGrave.

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=pis&GSsr=8...;

It includes the dates Aug. 4, 1820 and Oct. 12, 1906. These dates are also the dates listed for Martin Herbert Martindale. Some family trees list him as being born in OH and some in IN. I was always told that he was from IN, moved to TX, was a Confederate officer, came back up river on a flatboat (don't ask me what river that would have been?), and settled in the Rock, Kansas area. There is mention of his name as being one of the first settlers in the history of Rock, Kansas. In the last cesus before his death (1900 US Fed), he is listed as living with his daughter, Clara Belle Martindale Kimsey. I had never heard of him being married to anyone before ggggrandma Polly. Is this person the same person? Did he decide he didn't like his middle name and change it? Was he born in IN or OH?

I have his telescope and would really like to learn more about him. Thank you for any help.
