Origem do Nome Martins

Olá a todos,

Pelos vistos sou o primeiro Martins a responder de Portugal!!

Pelo que sei, Martins (a par de outros nomes portugueses acabados em "s") significa filho de Martim. Por sua vez, Martim tem origem Latina (provavelmente proto-romana) e significa, grosseiramente, "Guerreiro" e "Nobre". Há quem estableça a ligaçao com o Deus Romana da guerra, Marte. Contudo, as névoas do tempo olvidaram mais dados acerca deste nome. Observem, também, a freguesia de Algueirão-Mem Martins. O nome Martins, segundo o arqueólogo Rui Oliveira, provavelmente origina do nome do cavaleiro medieval que morou nesta região e que chamava-se Martim Escorso. Consequentemente, o nome poderá também provir do apelido dos filhos deste cavaleiro que também viveram nesta região e que se chamavam "Martins".

PS: Sem dúvida que existirão elevadissimas probabilidades de termos afinidades sanguíneas!

Marie C. Martiens (Martins/Martens), she was from Caprucke, Belguim. She came to the US in 1910, via Liverpool. Also I am looking for any information about how long people normally stayed in Liverpool prior to coming to the US. I know that she was born about April 1889-1891. Sorry for the wide year. I have different sources saying different years. I know she had a sister named Clara who had married a Van Durme in Belgium prior to moving to the US. I have been told by my grandmother that both of these were from the same village in the Azores and knew each other, but Josephine's father wouldn't let them date. They each moved to Massachusetts, her with sisters. Then each married someone else. Her husband got sick and went back to visit his family in the Azores and died there, leaving her a widow in the US, no children. Joseph married and worked in a tennis shoe factory in New Bedford (this is what my aunt tells me that he used to tell her). His wife and many children (my grandmother says he told her 5-7 children) all died of TB. Joseph and Josephine met up again in Massachusetts and married. He came out to CA and she followed, they had 5 children here, one being my grandmother. Their children: Alice, Jess, Madalyn(my grandmother), Joseph P, and his twin Kathleen?(she died about 18 months. If you or anyone has any info that might connect to this family please let me know. My grandmother told me that Josephine's siblings married and stayed in MA,
all I know of them is the names she gave me: Jose(Joseph), Maria Lurdes, Francisca, and Antone(Anthony or Tony)

Hello! I am trying to obtain family info/history on Daniel McNair Martin and his ancester John Martin. I am ultimately looking for my Irish roots. The following is all the available info that I have thus far:

John Martin came from Ireland about 1740, landed in Philadelphia and married an Irish lady named Isabella. They moved from Penn. to the Clover Bottoms of Virginia. Moved from there to Kershaw Dist. near Camden in South Carolina. Legend has it that his 3 sons served in the Rebel army. They all lived in Kershaw Dist. after the Rev. War. Source: letter dated May,18,1870 written by Daniel McNair Martin.

In a letter dated June 19, 1903, V.G. Stewart writes to cousin Lizzie:
John was born in Ireland and educated for the Ministy, his brother William was a lawyer in Ireland in 1740. John's father was a farmer in Ireland. John was the baby and his Mother was very indulgent and let him have all the money he wanted. By the time he graduated he was too wild to go into the Ministry.

John Chartered a ship and loaded it with Irish wanting to come to America, he was to sell them out and load the ship with flax seed and return to Ireland. When John Landed in New York (D.M. Martin says Philedelphia) there was not enough flax seed to load the ship.He waited, sold out Irish and had a good time until his money ran out. He got a school and wa successful, He built up a fine school and married an Irish woman (Isabell) (a), possibly Innes per Grace Puryear? (Carrie Mixon did find a Isabella Innes but did not connect)

He went to Virginia and established a school there, then went to Camden, S.C.

Isabella was a very common name, I Carrie Mixon have found several that could be the wife of John Martin, but no proof as yet. End of history gathered so far.

Any additional info would be greatly appreciated.

My great-great-grandmother, Matilda Martins was the daughter of an Irish-American Martins and a Portuguese woman (name unknown). Matilda Martins married Ernesto Joaquim de Barbosa Torres. Their daugther Aurora Torres (my great-grandmother) was born in Abrentes, Portugal. She married Fortunato Martins. He is not Irish but Portuguese. I have no further info. on him.
I know they (Aurora and Fortunato) came to the USA and had at least one child here before moving to Cape Verde and having at least two children there. They had 5 children in all.

My great-grandmother Aurora Martins Torres b. 1890s in Abrentes, Portugal, m. Fortunato Martins. Fortunato is the Portugues Martins line which I know absolutely nothing about. Aurora is d/o Ernesto Joaquim de Barbosa Torres and Mathilda Martins. Matilda's mother was Portuguese, her father was Irish-American (the Irish Martins line). Aurora Fortunato moved to US and had at least one daughter here before moving to island of Brava in Cape Verde where she had twins. Aurora Fortunato had 5 children in all. I need help!!!!!
i am trying to trace my father's family, and create our family tree...
My father was born in Hudson Ma. in 1918 to Fransisco, francisco Martins.. not sure on the spelling.
His father travelled to portugal on vacation when he was 4 yrs old, and my grand father died there, leaving my father jose martins there with his mother.
His mother, my grand mother, later was sent to prison there in portugal for poisening a water well during a wedding, because she wanted to marry the groom hersself.
My father returned to the US in 1967, and died in 1973.
If any one has herd of something related to this martins family, or knows of anyone that has please e-mail me.....

Looking for info on my g-grandfather Joaquim Martins. Born 4/19/1892 in Portugal. Died 5/28/1932 in Minneapolis, Wis. The only thing I know is that he was the son of a Grand Marquis, and that when he came to the US he joined the Catholic Priesthood. Any info would be helpfull.

My grandfather Joaquim was born in Portugal in 1909. As far as I know his father's name was Joa (sp?). His mother was Delphina Pinto. He had many brothers and sisters which he lost contact with when he left for Africa.

He married a lady Kathleen - I cannot recal her maiden name, she is South African born(my grandmother) - they had two boys, Antonio and Mario (my dad)

If anyone knows anything about this family I would love to hear from you. I do not know any of my grandfather's family and would like to get in contact with them.

My grandfather was from Santos, Brazil. His father was Casina san Martins and he came to Brazil from Bordeaux, France. I am interested in any information on any of my ancestors from either place. None of my grandfather's kin came to America that we know of, except for him. We know one brother, a Joseph (Jose) san Martins, and one sister, Maria Teresa, are deceased.
