My Grandfather, Clinton Marx, Son of the Maroni Family, spent the last few years of his life doing research.

At some point in time the family split in Germany one set coming to America and the other staying behind.....

He was able to go back into the late 1600 where the original sir name is Markus and later changed into Marx.

That is all the info I have attained.
The information I have, I found at the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. One of the stories says that they arrived in the US about 1852 and worked there for 3 years. While in New York in 1855 they enlisted in the US Army in Company A of the Seventh Regiment of Infantry. A Captain Jones was their commanding officer. There is a copy of a "Declaration for Pension" which gives the date of April 23 1855 for joining the Army and April 23 1860 as being discharged in Camp Floyd Utah. The Declaration for Pension is dated March 4, 1907. I attached a copy of the document.

We probably have the same genealogical info thanks to the research being done already by the Utah Marx family. I have the same dates as you so far. It's definitely the same family. I know quite a bit about Jacob and descendants, but not much about the rest of his family. I'm really curious about their religious background. It seems each brother had a different faith, Jacob being catholic. From what I understand, the area they come from is a heavily Lutheran and Jewish area.

I'm curious as to where you heard the story of getting to NY and joining the army? My ancestor, Jacob (Johannes Phillipp's brother), was a civil war veteran. Jacob and Johannes Phillip had another brother who was also known as Phillip (born Jul 25, 1824) who committed suicide in Milwaukee, he also was a civil war vet.

David

The information I have for Johannes Philipp Marx (known as Philipp) born March 1, 1834 says he was the 6th of 8 children of Maria Barbara & Johann Georg Marx. His father died when he was 12 and his mother when he was 9. It says that he and hs brothers Johann & George and their sister Barbara came to America in 1852. One story says they went to NY and then joined the Army. Later George went to Wisconsin and Johann went to NY where Barbara was living. The information I have I found and the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. Johannes Phillip did join the Mormon church and moved to Moroni, Sanpete Co. Utah for the rest of his life. Does this sound like the same family?

I am related to this family as well. When the Marx family came over from Hesse-Darmstadt, they settled in Wisconsin. There were atleast 8 kids and one of them, Johannes Philip Marx, must have converted to Mormonism and subsequently moved out to Moroni, Utah. He died on Sept. 6, 1912 in Moroni. I'm a direct descendant of his brother, Jacob Marx. Descendants of Johannes Philip did the family tree and traced them back to their town of emigration, which was Asbach near the city of Darmstadt. I too would like to know more information about the Marx family in Utah.

David
Madison, WI

Hello, Nancy,

Just found your posting. I am interested in your MARX connection in Worms am Rhein. Your post is dated 2000. Have you learned any more about your MARX family?

My father, Frank (Franz) MARX was born 1901 in Worms. His father was Johann and mother Katerina BROSS. There were three other children: Anna, Katerina, and Hans. My father was the only one in his family to emigrate to the U. S., about 1927. Unfortunately, I was bitten by the genealogy bug after all has passed away, so I have few clues to other family members. I don't even know if my grandfather had any brothers and sisters. I have been concentrating on my maternal side which goes back to colonial times and keeps me quite busy. But I need to start on my father's side and occasionally probe for information on this side.

One other clue I have is that my grandmother had a brother Adolph. Before the war he apparently lived in Worms, but by 1956 when my father took me to Germany to meet his family, he was living in Moers, in the Ruhr region, I believe.

Looking forward to your reply, even if you have nothing more. Yours is the first MARX/Worms connection I have seen.

Thank you.
Jon (Johann Wilhelm) Marx

Re: Update on Henry & Charley Marx from Texas

I am listing this post on the "Marks" message board as well as the "Marx" board as I have found both spellings used interchangably on several Texas censuses.

My great-grandparents, Heinrich (Henry) Marx, b. 17 Apr 1854 in Germany (Prussia), married to Elise Steinwait (could be Steinwasser), b. 28 Oct 1860 in Germany (Prussia) emmigrated to Texas with newborn son, Emil (b. 11 Dec 1881), and left the port of Hamburg on 1 Feb 1882 on the SS Australia. They are listed as being from HARBURG. They arrived in New York on 20 Feb. 1882. Henry was a stone/rock mason by trade and was hired to work on the State Capitol in AUSTIN, Texas. Elise Steinwasser's family may have owned a family bakery in Berlin.

Family stories suggest Heinrich (Henry) may have had a half-brother named Charlie (Charley) who lived in Marble Falls, Texas for a while. Red Granite was quarried from this area and used on the Texas State Capitol, so he may have also been a stone mason (granite cutter).

It is believed Charley had only one leg (lost perhaps from a snake bite?) Family stories suggest he didn't have any of his own children, but married someone with children already (inconclusive at this point).

I found a Charley Marks listed on the Texas census living next to Henry & wife (who were in their 70s by this time) in TRAVIS County in 1930, but I am not sure if this is the half-brother, or a son to Charley (because of the age difference). They are listed as follows:

Marks, Charley, age 41, born in Texas (married at age 25 or could be age 20, hard to read)
Marks, Erma (may be Emma), wife, age 40, married at 19, b. in Texas
Marks, Henry, son, age 19, b. in Texas
Marks, Martha, daughter, age 17, b. in Texas
Marks, Susie, daughter, age 14, b. in Texas
Marks, Oscar, son, age 12, b. in Texas
Marks, Jessie, son, age 10, b. in Texas
Marks, Albert, son, age 7, born in Texas

I have been unsuccessful tracing this family prior to or after 1930.

Any info you could provide on this family or Henry's family in Germany would be greatly appreciated - or info on other Marks/Marx families found in this area...
You say u were born in Hartford,WI? Curious.....Mabel (nee Held) Lemmer
had 5 children: Marvin,Lucille,Jerome,Delores, and Lloyd.
Marvins kids were born in Michigan; Lucilles were born in Milwaukee,WI; Jeromes were born in Milwaukee,WI; Delores kids were born,I believe, in Milwaukee;and Lloyds were born I don't know where. But I seriously doubt it was in Hartford,WI.
Max Lemmer changed his name to John Willis (John was Max's fathers first name)when he ran out on the family during the depression. His oldest son, Marvin, followed and changed his name to Marvin Willis.
Any other questions- email me. jwpmmp@aol.com

Hello Susan. The Sandy who contacted you earlier is a third cousin of mine on another branch of the family tree. If Jean Chipman from Berwick, NS, is in your line, we have a common female ancestor...my great-grandmother Jane Stanhope. Jean was a half-sister to my grandfather. I'd be happy to hear from you if you'd like more information on this side of your family.

I'm looking for Shirley Marx. She was married to
Bernard Lipsey. She probably lived in Joliet (Will County) Illinois. I can't find a thing, any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Char polkadotcrafts@yahoo.com
