Stuart - My GGG Grandfather was John Masson b unknown in Fetteresso, Kincardine, Scotland, married to Margaret Masson. They have 12 children, one of them is Andrew b. 1 May 1836. So this may be the Andrew you're searching for.

This information is mainly from the IGI though I also have some records from Scottish Origins. Holler if I can provide add'l details.

My Great Great Grandpapa was Andrew Masson, b.ca 1837 in Fetteresso (I believe), Scotland. he trained as an engineer in Edinburgh and became a leading manufacture of machinery used in the paper making industry. His works (Masson Scott) were in Battersea (York Place)in the 1880's/1890's

I am very keen to confirm his place of birth and to tie him in with one of the many strands of the Masson family who lived in Fetteresso.

I know he visited the US to meet US paper machine manufacturers in ca 1895 - can anyone throw any further light on this visit?

He married another Masson (Mary) in June 1864 in the Free Kirk in Kintore (Aberdeenshire). Does anyone know of her family??

Hi Rosemary

I'm afraid I'm not going to be up in Aberdeen for the meeting - my dad is going through a triple by-pass operation next week, and the next few are going to be taken up trying to help my mum. I have a great deal of information which I have gathered over the years, and if it is okay with you, when I have a chance, I'll send you a copy of it directly, and you can add to, or query anything that I have. Can you send me your email address? Mine is cmsmckellar@aol.com

Look forward to hearing from you again.

Kind regards

Catriona

Hi Catriona

Are you going to the Family History Society meeting in Aberdeen at the end of April? I will be up there but I was too late ( as usual) to book for the talks. My youngest son is now working and living up in Aberdeen so it's a godsend.

I have got quite a bit of info on BMD's as I went mad when I discovered Scotlands People!

Love, Rosemary

Joseph has decided to be a brick wall.

He is my GGGGgrandfather, found in Census in Wentworth Co, ON. He married Rebekah (last name possible Wedge), who was US born. Their first child was born at "Fairchild's Creek" likely in Beverley Township. He got land in Glanford Tp and lived there until his death in 1871 at the age of 91.

The children and grand-children gave their ethnicity as French on many census reports. They were:
Thomas Mason b 1813
George Mason b 1818
Mathilda Jane Mason b 1820
Joseph Mason b 1826
Rebecca Mason b 1827
David Mason b 1832
Alex Mason b 1833
Elizabeth Mason b 1835
James R. Mason b 1848 (not certain about that one)

Any takers?

Judith
The Masson Family of Peckham Surry

We are searching for information about the family of George Masson and Ann(e) Keay Masson (nee Pitt) who according to the 1881 Census lived at 106 St Georges Road, Peckham with their family. Martha (c1867) Amy (c1869), Alfred (c 1871), William (c 1874), and Jessie.(?) Their eldest son Edward was in the Marines at Chatham and in the early 1890s was stationed in Australia where he was discharged and married Mary Hayward.

We have been able to find Ann and Jessie in the 1891 and 1901 census. William appears in the 1891 census and we suspect we have found him in Australia but cannot prove it while Alfred appears to have been on board ship and then disappears. George died in 1887 at Camberwell and there is an entry for Ann Masson in the Death Indexes for 1916 in St Albans, Herts. But what happened to the others. The marriage indexes are less than helpful bec if you find one party it's next to impossible to find the other unless you know a name.

Does anyone know anything about this family or can make suggestions of how to track them? We are hopeful that someone might have some knowledge of the family or that perhaps some other part of the family might just happen to read this.
Thanks, Glenys

PS I'm in Australia near Newcastle NSW

Linda, the first three are also 'mine' but your Joseph born in 1778 is a mystery. I have a Louis Joseph son of Barnabe born in 1745.

I got all my information from the U of Montreal site, which by the way says they're working on the data from 1779 to 1850 which could shed light on my later Joseph Massons. It would all be so much easier if there was great name variety.

I'll send as an attachment my full Masson line to your home address, but to anyone else out there in cyber space I'd be happy to share what other generous people have shared with me.
Thank you Sharyn for your posting. In fact your research confirms mine, except that I have 14 and possibly 15 children in Barnabe's first marriage.

I'd like to compare more recent Massons -- those who died or were born after PRDH postings. I have many mystery Joseph's but have accurate records from the early 1900s I'd be happy to share.

Please contact me off line at ruthdouglas@rogers.com

Your message of 16 March wherein you noted that you have information on the Masson family back to the mid 1700's was of special interest to me. From my father, Robert Joseph Masson (Mason), I have minimal information about his parents and grandparents. In hopes of finding their antecedents, I have spent countless hours over many years searching in the LDS library in Salt Lake City as well as searching both US and Canadian census records. I have been totally unsuccessful in those searches. This is what I know from my father.

My father:
Robert Joseph Masson (Mason)
Born - August 24, 1888 in Muskegon, Michigan
Died - March 12, 1974 in Muskegon, Michigan

Robert's father:
Napoleon Masson
Born - Februrary 2, 1859 in Canada (city unknown)
Died - 1919 (in USA city unknown)

Robert's mother:
Mary Leveque (Robert's baptismal records shows her given name as Gratia)
Born - December 19, 1861 in Levis, Quebec, Can.
Died - December 1, 1904 in Chicago, Illinois

Napoleon Masson's father:
Joseph Masson
Born - Date unknown in Canada (city unknown)
Died - 1904 (location unknown)

Napoleon Masson's mother
Louise Marion
Born - Date unknown in Canada (city unknown)
Died - 1906 (location unknown)

Mary Leveque's father:
Thomas Leveque
Born - June 29, 1840 in Canada (city unknown)
Died - February 28, 1925 in Muskegon, Michigan

Mary Leveque's mother:
Mary Smith
Born - July 22, 1831 in Ireland (city unknown)
Died - December 4, 1919 in Muskegon, Michigan

I would be most grateful for any information you might share with me that would shed any light on this branch of the Masson family. This message is being sent via my daughter's account, but I would appreciate it if you could reply to my home e-mail address which is:
jhm22@adelphia.net

Thank you,
James H. Any help appreciated, I'm a newbie and at a loss as to how to continue. Two sons named William in this family. Think one married Isabel Coveney 1905 and died 1913.
Hi, It is a long time since my Masson posting and luckily I get an alert sent to me whenever someone replies. As it happens, your reply is the first I have had about the family. It sounds quite possible that there could be a connection guessing only from what you said and the circumstances.

I have precious little information myself though some I discovered only recently. My Isabella Masson was born September 26, 1833 in Cawnpore and was baptised there on October 27th the same year. She was the daughter of James Masson though I do not know yet what his profession was. She married my relaive Etienne Auguste Roussac [1832 Calcutta -1908 Agra] who ended up as Deputy Postmaster General. As far as I know, he never left India. They had 11 children all but 2 of whom survived and married.

I am about to go on a 6 week holiday in S.E. Asia but when I get back in March I will be going to the British LIbrary ans will check the records to see if they reveal anything more about James Masson or other Massons in India around that time.

Best regards,

Alistair

Yes it is George Nelson, Father Timothy, Mother Sarah, Do not have a Paul, their were several stillborns. They were back and forth over the border (Border Hoppers). No Mitald or Aimee in the line as far as I know. Looks like it could be two different families. Timothy and Sarah had 3 children. I have had a hard time tracking them down due to the French naming pattern they seem to go by their middle names. Alice is Mary Alice and have seen it as Sparling and Sparland. Dont' you just love when the puzzle pieces come together. Took me 2 years to find Timothy.

Aha! We ARE researching the same Maitland Mason...

However, I have his father as George Nelson Mason [not Nelson Mason] and his mother as Mary Sparling [not Alice Sparling]. This, according to Border Crossing Record, May, 1913 when they left West Bolton, Brome County, PQ, CA for Richford, Franklin County, VT, US.

In the 1911 Census of Canada, Timothy (55 yrs) & Sarah (53) were living with Nelson (35) & Mary (30) and children Paul, Maitland, Dorsey, Gilbert, and Terrell. Two years later, when they crossed the border, the family group was George Nelson & Mary Sparling Mason and four of their five children; 15-yr-old Paul apparently stayed behind with his grandparents.

Now I have a question for you. Do you have a MITALD MASON [b.1901] in your line? His wife, AIMEE MASON, celebrated her 100th b-day in August in Derby Line, VT. They were born in Canada but lived in Troy, Franklin County, VT in 1930.

About the names of French ancestors: There are two factors to consider--French culture, and the Catholic tradition. The usual "pattern" or custom was (and for some of us, still is) to give the infant both a family name and a Biblical name. Then the family would use one of those names as the "given" name based on convenience more than anything else--because you might have five or six family members with the family name "Frank," for example, or the Biblical name "Mary." Try not to use only the "first name" when posting; always use both names so others won't be confused. A more complex problem for me as a family historian, I've found, are the spelling inconsistencies in genealogical records. Example: If Mary Sparling's actual Biblical name was the French "Marie," don't spell it in English. General rule of thumb: Write it as it was spelled on the birth certificate. If the BC isn't available, but the person was listed as French-speaking and Catholic in the census report and/or on a Border Crossing document, you can safely assume that the correct spelling was "Marie."

You wrote that you don't find a "Paul" in that family unit. Do you have a "Basil"? I spoke with Timothy's gr-grandson Terrell recently, and he remembers his Uncle Basil?

Do you have dates, even rough estimates? There are hundreds of ancestors in my line alone, so we really need a bit of guidance. If your Maitland is mine, for example, he was a relative of my father, and Dad died at age 93 only four years ago--so already, you see, we are going back into the 19th c.

Just a quick comment, in the hope that it might be helpful as you continue your work: Remember that the spelling of surnames was often changed as ancestors migrated within Europe and to North America. Example: The surnames MAESSON and MASSON (Eur)may have become MASON (US). The most interesting example in my family was the dicovery that my G-grandfather Mitchel Chateauneuf was reduced to Chat'neuf (yes, clerks actually used the apostrophe), then Shatniff and several other variants along the way until I came to know him as Mitchell Shatney. So, realize that your ROUSSAC ancestors, like mine, may have become ROUSSEL, ROUSSELL, and then RUSSELL.

I have been re-reading posts and decided to check out this one. The answer on Joseph is that he was from Barnabe's second marriage to Marie LANDRY. He was born Nov 19 1778 and baptised Nov 20 1778 at St-Cuthbert. He did not marry prior to the PRDH cut-off date to 1799.

According to PRDH, Barnabe MASSON (b. 1705) fathered children until Nov 14 1780 and died in 1784. He married his first wife, Marie Agnes GRENIER dit GARNIER, Jan 30 1731 and fathered 13 children with her before she died in 1771. He married Marie LANDRY (b. 1750) June 7 1773. She had 4 children with Barnabe, gave birth to her last child in 1780, and remarried in 1785 after the death of Barnabe.

Regards,
Sharyn

Re: Isabella MASSON m. Etienne Augusta ROUSSAC 1859 India

Alistair - I hope even though there is 5 yrs between your post and this reply, that you check the boards occasionally.
I would also be interested in hearing from anyone else to whom this information is familiar.I have hit a brick wall. I have a William Herbert Masson, physician born in Cawnpore India about 1843. He turns up in the Census in 1881 and 1891 in Daventry. On his marriage registration his fathers name is given as William (Pulteney/Pulkney/Pulkey-spelling)Masson who was already deceased at this time (1880) Fathers occupation was given as "judge".
William H. married a widow, Susan Coleman (nee Puckey) She had two son's who took the surname Masson - John P and Pembroke C as well as two sons with William H Masson - both named William b. 1881 & 1883. One Son William's middle name Edward, the other middle name Herbert.
Have birth certificate for William Edward (son of W&S) in 1881 - marriage certificate for William, the physician and Susan(1880) Nottinghamshire.
Wondering if the "judge" and his son, my William Herbert, may be your Isabella's relative - re the India marriage location in your post. I may be grasping at straws, but have been unable to locate any other information re Masson's in India that seem to fit my family.
Would also appreciate any help on how to locate a person by occupation (the judge) and also susan's father Edward Puckey who was a ship owner according to the marriage registration. Thanks

Need to find a judge in England and a physician /surgeon

My ancestors marriage cetificate indicates that his father William P Masson ( P could stand for Puckey, Puckney, Pulkney, Pulteney) was a judge - already deceased at the time of his son's marriage in 1880. Can't find him in the census.

The mystery deepens when i consider that my ancestor, also named William Masson ( middle name Herbert) was born in India in 1843 I am assuming the judge was also in India at this time.

William Herbert Masson is listed as a Licentiate of the College of Physicians and Surgeons,Edinburgh- in the 1881 census in Daventry - (mistranscribed as Malson)Locate the family again in 1891, and the good Dr is dead in 1898. After that, I can't find the family save for one son, also william who married my ggrandmother.

But, I'm rambling..... I really would appreciate suggestions on how to locate the Judge and determine his wife and other children( India? England, or possibly Scotland since the son may have been educated in Edinburgh)

Also would like to find more info pre-1881 on William Masson - the Doctor. Suggestions on where to search, please.

Thanks in advance to all who respond.
