Masterson -Taunton, MA and Ireland

Hi, I am researching my Masterson roots. My great grandmother was Mary Jane Masterson who was born in Ireland. Her parents were Matthew and Catherine (Martin) Masterson. Catherine Masterson came from Ireland to Taunton, Massachusetts with her chilren, William, John, Lawrence, Mary Jane and Robert about 1890. Daughter Mary Jane married Allen George Bowen.
I see many Mastersons from the Taunton, MA area and would love to know if any are related. I know son William's branch moved to Worcester, MA. My question is: Where in Ireland did these Mastersons come from? My Mom said Kilkenny, but I'm not so sure.
Thanks.
Pat

MY great grandmother was Birdie L.Masterson-King. She was Bat Masterson's sister. Their father was Winfield Scott Masterson. Most of the main Masterson family settled in Arizona. Winfield went as far north as possible and joined the Union Army because he was so dark-skinned(his mother was full-blooded Indian;Blackfoot or Cherokee)and he was against slavery. He was married to 3 different women(probably the same 3 who broke him out of an Arizona prison)and Birdie was one of his daughters;and Bat was one of his sons.email me and I will send you census records.

My great grandfather was their son, Edward Eugene MASTERSON, born August 23, 1880 in Lake Forest Ill. Edward married Alma STREIBER, born in 1879 in Highland Park, Ill. Alma had two sons, Charles Thomas and Eugene. After she passed away, in 1915, Edward remarried and had more children. Charles and Eugene went to live with their maternal grandparents, the STREIBER's. Charles and Eugene never met their half siblings. I am interested in finding more information on Peter and Edward.

Descendant of Mastersons in Izard County, Arkansas late 1800s to early 1900s

My paternal grandmother's maiden name was Jessie Stone. She was born about 1900 in Arkansas. Her mother's maiden name was Masterson and I have been told that she was Dutch. I don't know first names. Jessie Stone had two sisters and her husband's name was John Rout. I have been told that he immigrated into Arkansas from Indiana as a young man but was originally from Kentucky. Jessie and John Rout lived in Izard County near Gid. Jessie died in 1957 in Batesville, Independence County, Arkansas. John Rout died in the early 1940s I think. They are buried in Reeves Cemetery near Mt. Pleasant in Izard County, Arkansas. Any information would be very appreciated.

My father, William Thomas Masterson, was born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1910. His parents were William James Masterson and Elizabeth Margaret McGrath. He died in 1993 in California. His siblings were George Masterson, Irene Masterson, Katherine Masteron, and Theodore James Masterson (Ted). Ted is the only surviving Masterson of the siblings.

My father was raised in Cleveland, Ohio. His paternal grandparents were Thomas McGrath, and Katherine (or Catherine) Regan. His maternal grandparents were William Masterson and Katherine (or Catherine) O'Neil or O'Neill. Katherine O'Neil remarried William C. Denton after the death of her husband, William Masterson.

There are still cousins of mine whom I have never met residing in Cleveland, Ohio. I would like to be united with them. If anyone knows anything about these families, please contact me. I live in the South. I have never been to Ohio, so I would not even know where to begin to look for them. I only have the names, MOTT, O'MALLEY, AND VONMAGNUS to go by. Can anyone help to put me in touch with my father's remaining family? Thanks so much!!

Sincerely,

Diane Masterson

"Tall Jane" Kentucky Masterson Ghost

Here’s a topical Masterson query, as All Saint’s Day is nearly upon us:

Is Tall Jane about to appear once again?

I wonder if there are any other Masterson descendants out there who have inherited this family ghost.

Every few years I like to inquire after this interesting apparition.

I remember, as a kid, being thrilled by her appearance out in our yard, just as twilight faded into a late fall darkness. She was indeed quite tall, and always stayed in the shadows, away from the lights of the house.

We were told that Tall Jane was a Halloween tradition handed down from my great-great grandmother Lucy Jane Masterson’s family. Much later it was revealed that tradition was aided by my mother’s mother, a broomstick, a beat up hat, and some old coats.

I would be very interested to learn if anyone else knows of this Tall Jane.

I have information passed down in the family going back as far as Lucy Jane’s father, William Masterson. It is now a trivial task to find on the Internet that William was a son and grandson of Edward Mastersons. One of William’s uncles was Richard Masterson, of Masterson Station in Fayette County, Kentucky.

Another family chestnut concerns one Ruth Adkinson, of Carrollton, Kentucky. My father’s cousin Ann Spalding, who was a school librarian there, rented a room from Ruth during the school year. Ann and Ruth decided they must be cousins, because both were Masterson descendants, and both had been haunted by Tall Jane as children.

From Masterson Station, Uncle Richard Masterson moved to what is now Carrollton, and again “Internet” information reveals that he was an ancestor of Ruth Adkinson. So it appears that Tall Jane must date back to Richard’s generation, at least. Well over two hundred years back.

I think that my Masterson line goes back as follows:

Edward Masterson ( As far back as there seems to be reliable information.)
Edward Masterson ( Brother of Richard, of Masterson Station.)
William Masterson ( Settled in Lincoln County, Kentucky.)
Lucy Jane Masterson + Dr. David J. Alcorn
Dr. Edward L. Alcorn
J.G.C. Alcorn
Edward B. Alcorn
Edward B. Alcorn, Jr.

So I would be delighted to hear that Tall Jane is still going strong, and is scheduled to excite some young Masterson descendant this Halloween.

Ted Alcorn
Lexington, KY
I have been read that there are supposed to be Mastersons burried in an Appleton Cemetery. Where is this cemetery? In Old Appleton? Does it still exist? Does it go by another name? Have the graves been lost? The same in regards to the Apple Creek Presbyterian Cemetery in Pocahantas. I searched the cemetery and didn't find all of the Mastersons that were supposed to be there. Has anyone found the graves, are have they been lost? Any information would be appreciated.

Hi,
I have lots of information on the above but need lots, too! I am desc of Joseph Francis MASTERSON, born in NY (but his immediate family mostly born in Ireland) Parents of Joseph Frances MASTERSON were Laurence and Rose Ellen CUNNINGHAM, both born in Ireland.

Joseph Francis MASTERSON's brothers all came to Illinois via a 5 year stop in New York in 1850, but one brother - JAMES - went to Australia. (I have a letter dated 1881 by James) which could intimate he was "transported" from Ireland and indeed I have found supporting documentation this but am "stuck."

In addition, I am looking for information for CUNNINGHAM and Mary O'BRIEN/O'BRIAN, wife of Laurence MASTERSON.

I'd love to hear from anyone with any information and I'll be happy to share information that I have regarding these branches of the tree!

Thanks,

Kelly Moore Harms

Hi,
I have been trying to get past a John Masterson (b. 1860-1863, d. around 1939) from Missouri. He was married to either Estella or Eunice (Grandmother says Eunice, Census says Estella). Their children were Bruce, Florence and possibly Charles (died young) and my Great- Grandmother Junie Grace (Masterson) Arnold. I keep ending up with a W. Masterson who was married to a Mary. I'd like to comfirm that it John's father was this W. Masterson and would like to go back further. Some how, I too am a distant cousin of the famous Mastersons. If anyone has info, it would be great!
thanks, Jaki

William Masterson - Clinton Wisconsin

I'm researching the line of William Masterson who was born abt.1834-7, probably in Canada. His father was probably John Masterson (b. 1806-10)who immigrated from Mayo, Ireland. William went from Canada to Ohio to Clinton, Vernon, WI. William's siblings were Mary Jane, Michael and Eliza. William's wife was Jane Supri. I'm interested in finding more information about William's wife, siblings and finding information concerning John's birth and immigration. Does anyone recognize this family?

James P Mastersons unmarked grave

I have been doing research on the three
Masterson brothers, Edward,Bat and Jim.
I am sad to say James grave is not
marked. Jim is buried in the Masterson
family plot in Wichita,Kansas. The Family
plot is located in the Highland Cemetery
on Hillside Drive. Jims grave is in section
02 Lot 070 space006.
Jim was a far better lawman than brother Bat.
Jims exploits did excede Bats or even their
friend Wyatt Earp. Jim was a faithful lawman
until his death in 1895. It is a real pity
that a true American Hero has been so
neglected.He deserves a tombstone!
I have a list of all the family members
buried with Jim and would be glad to e-mail
the list to anyone interested.

I bought a very old German Bible and catechism book at a sale in the hopes of finding the family it belongs to.

Inscribed inside is "Hazel MASTERSON". A loose card has "This Bible belonged to Mary DECKER born in 1827, great grandmother of Earl, Jean Ann and Ruth Ellen MASTERSON". Another loose sheet has "George Washington VALENTINE was born March the 16 in the year of our Lord 1859 and was babtised [sic] April the twenty first. Sarah Elizabeth born November the 21st 1863. Baptised December 10th, 1863 by Rev KUTZMAN(n?)"

There are additonal inscriptions in old German that I cannot read. No date on the Bible but the catechism book has a publication date of 1840 in Philadelphia. The same name ??? Decker ????1847 is in both books. I would love to find the family of these items.
