I have a GG Grandfather named "Matchett Johnson." He was born in 1812 in Wayne County, North Carolina. I think his mother's name was "Alice", or possibly "Margaret." I suspect her maiden name was Alice Matchett.

Can you give we any help here? We have tried for 30 years to find "Matchett Johnson's" parents.

Dear Frank,

I came across your inquiry and thought you might like to hear some things that our family has come across. I know there are a lot of Matchett's, Matchette's, and Matchet's living in North America. Our family story has it that Samuel and Sarah Matchet, who resided in the Banbridge, No. Ireland region had five sons who immigrated to No. America. They supposedly went via Canada instead of Ellis Island. My great grandfather, John, was one of them. He later went to Black River Falls, WI. He and his wife had daughters and sons, my grandfather Louis D Matchette being the youngest. Louis had an older brother, William Matchette. In the past I have had correspondence with a William Matchette who was the great grandson of the aforementioned William. This William Matchette worked for Abbott Laboratories and lived north of Chicago. William and Louis had a sister, Dilla and an older brother, Franklin who became a very successful businessperson in New York City.

I have personally been to the Irish Historical House in Bainbridge, No. Ireland. The person in charge there typed in my name and hundreds of Matchette's, Matchett's, and Matchet's popped up, more or less verifying that our people did come from that agricultiural region of County Down.

Interestingly, once I googled our name and discovered the same name in Northern France. It was at a time just before the Edict of Nantes was issued by the French Crown. This part of France was known as the home of the Huegenots, a protestant faction of skilled artisans. The "Edict" pretty much put a bounty on their heads and many moved to England and Ireland to escape persecution. So it is likely that all of the Matchette's, etc. have a French origin since this action occured in the 1700's before immigration to No. America.

I hope this helps your inquiry.

Regards,

Jeff Matchette

That is most interesting. You must be descended from Mercer Matchett? He was the son of my great grandad's brother. There were others too in Manchester Connecticut connected to the family ie Abraham Matchett, another brother. I have a photo of Mercer in the silk mill there.

My family came from Milltown Parish in Derrincaw. I have found that a great deal of Irish immigrants settled in Manchesster, Hartford County, Connecticut and came from this very area; as if all were interested in the weaving industry of silk set up in Manchester, Connecticut.

http://www.interment.net/data/us/ct/hartford/east/east_smsz....

AND

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=10...

Just an update on the off chance that someone may be able to help!

My g.g.g.grandfather William James Matchett was born around 1861/1862 (he was 49 on the 1911 census and listed as born in Belfast). I have a copy of his marriage certificate (21/07/1880) which lists his father as Moses Matchett.

So we think that it must have been Moses Matchett who moved from the Birches in Armagh to Belfast, sometime before 1861.

I think there were only two Moses Matchetts around this time as far as I can find, is anyone able to help with info on them??

Thanks!

Lucy

Stephanie,

My grandfather, Walter Tedford, was a silk worker in Manchester. I will ask my father which mill he worked in. He probably worked along side your cousins, too.

Can you help me expand my tree with more information regarding Jane Matchett who shows up as my g-g-g- grandmother?

Sarah Stevenson was my g-grandmother on my father's mother's side. Her daughter was Margaret McKinney and Sarah was born in 1863 somewhere in Ireland.

And the Sullivans--I can't get past that generation. Jane Matchett was married to John Sullivan. I don't have their birth or death dates or where they were born. How are you related to Jane?

Any information or links to family info on Ancestry. com would be appreciated.

Paula

Stephanie,

You're my missing link! My dad has asked me what I have discovered about the Stevensons, and have found the family to be really hard to research. Any info. on them, and let me know if it's found here at Ancestry.com, would be very welcome.

I'll bet my grandparents--my grandfather descended from the Matchetts and my grandmother from the Stevensons--never knew of this family connection.

I'm so glad that you responded to my posting and it's especially terrific that you're living in Ireland. I will definitely be in touch with Phyllis. I have to ask my father if he has ever met her or even knew she existed.

I am discovering how many Tedford families left Ireland in the mid-1800's and settled in Manchester, CT. Did you know that they were linen weavers in Ireland and came to Manchester to work in the silk mills? My father who was born in Manchester and raised in the area has no idea how many people are related to him there. He will be very excited to learn about all of this. Thank you again.

Paula

Hopefully they would recognize their ancestors in it.

The families include the Simonton/Symingtons, Smyth, Lappan, McConville, Pentland/Pendleton, Caddell, Dougan, Neill, Medcaffe, Ramsay, Venart, Stratton, Allen, Gates, Metcalf, and Corner.

Thank you,
Roxanna
I had trouble sending an attached file.
That's very exciting news, about your paternal great grandmother. (I rarely encounter that). Was she from the area as well. Who's daughter was she?

Thomas Pentland married Deborah Ann Simonton in 1857.

His parents were George and Jane/Jennie (Anderson) Pentland.

Her parents were Thomas and Mary Ann (Smyth) Simonton. Their gravestone is in the Milltown Church of Ireland cemetery.

Deborah Ann was from a large family. I have located some of their names, see below. We had a relative visit in the 1940s. She kept a travel diary and here is an excerpt.

The house was down by 1960 . The family is buried at Milltown. A cousin is May Martin. Other relatives include Sarah, Ethel and Teresa Symington, Jim and Sophie Symington. Jim died December 30, 1957.
From Mamie's diary "Got up ready to go to church this A.M. Mrs. M. says we are going in to see the Old Symington home where Moses' mother Deborah Ann, were reared. The house sat on a hill all green and beautiful with hedges around. The house is down now but I saw the road up to it. And the family is buried at Milltown. Mrs. M. says you don't want to go out there you know they aren't there now - We hope, you now, they are above. "

Do you recognize any of the names. Reportedly one of Deborah Ann Simonton's sisters married a Martin?

These are the siblings of Deborah that I have located, though I don't know who they married, etc.

Margaret Jane m. David Neill
Spence m. Elizabeth Lappan
Moses m Elizabeth Conville but they later divorced. They had 5 kids
Deborah Ann
Robert George
Thomas George m. Francis Crawford *after moving to Connecticut)
Elizabeth
Lillian Elizabeth m. Archibald Dougan in 1880
Robert m. Margaret D
William John
Sarah m. Anthony Medcaffe in 1829

Do you recognize any of the couples? or know of anyone I could contact in the area?

Regarding the Pentland line.

George and Jane started out in Drumgor and moved to Derrykeevan about 1826. I don't know when he died but Jane lived until 1877 in the same duplex in Derrykeevan. Next door lived her daughter Jane Pentland Warnock.

I'd love to share Pentland info. From what we have the name is spelled Pentland, Pendleton and Pentleton, at least for the records we've found for George and Jane.

Thanks,
Roxanna Pentland Transit

Stuart, I would be interested to know if you belong to the tree dating back to William Matchett and Mary Robinson from Armagh in Ireland? Along with Stephanie and Carl Matchett who contribute to this site, I have a huge history on descendents of this family especially in Australia. This history also goes back to Norfolk and Norwich in England and the clergy.

Yes that would help. Please send me the tree to stephaniemcevoy7@hotmail.com and I can pass it on to the family concerned and see what they know. As for my Pentland line. So little is known in my own family of them and my research into this family has not yet even started. All I know is that they came from Ballyworkan, Co Armagh and attended Mullavilly Church. My grannie's Mum was Annie Pentland and she died of a post-partem haemorrhage after the birth of her daughter.I do not know Annie's father's name yet. My grannie was only a toddler then.I also know that many of that family have war graves and died during the two World Wars.Annie's sisters both married brothers called Toal.

I live a ten minute walk from there.Neighbours here include the Simmingtons, Neills,Smyths,Martins, Warnocks,Medcalfs and Andersons. So any of these families you wish to be in touch with then please let me know and I will ask them for you.As for our Pentlands---I know little of them as the research into this side of my family has not yet started. All I know is that they lie in Seagoe cemetary.

Well I live in Northern Ireland in the old Matchett birth places of which you ask so info is easily found as I just walk down the road and read the parish records LOL. There are so many lines here of Matchetts that it is so confusing and at present I am trying to untangle some of them. So far all the lines have been traced back to a small number of Matchetts of Co Armagh who all lived in a five mile radius of one another in the 1700s. Earlier records were destroyed by conflict here in the 1600s but we can rely on the oral history for that and also some records have survived that provide clues instead of birth, death marriage records etc. First Matchetts here are recorded in 1610.At present we reckon that the Matchett/ Tedford connection to the Derrycaw Matchett line with Richard Matchett married to Mary Totten being their ancestors but so far that has to be confirmed and is being worked on at present. I can see where they lived from my window as I am living on the home place and am descended from the same family.

I have a photo taken outside the silk mill of Mercer in Connecticut. There are still family there that I am in touch with.

Hi Anne, still working away on this. I feel we are getting close to solving the missing links, don't you? I am going down to GRONI soon to see what they have to sort out all these Richards so we will know who was married to who. A lot of them married lassies called Mary just to confuse us even more LOL.
