John Marion Mater

I've tried to connect before with descendants of John Marion Mater. No one responds. So, I thought I would post here.

Although John Marion Mater is not a relative of mine as far as I know, I came across a note in my mother-in-law's attic inside something belonging to John Marion Mater in 1870. The note says John Marion Mater was married in 1870. If he married the first time in 1880 as others say, he would have been about 30 years old....quite old for men to marry for the first time back then. The note also said John Mater was the father of L. L. Mater.

If someone can prove to me that John Marion Mater married in 1870, I will see that this object is returned to the Mater family.

Myrte E Mater, Waukesha Wisconsin

I am looking for information relating to Myrtle E Mater. She married Frederick Lester Dailey on Aug 2 1904. She was born abt 1884 in Wisconsin, father was born in Germany, and mother in New York all according to the 1910 US census. Frederick and Myrtle lived in Waukesha, Wisconsin and had 3 children, Ruth M.(b. 11/24/1904) Frederick Llyod(b. 6/23/1907), and Dorothy(b. abt 8/15/1909). I am unsure what happened to Myrtle. Fred remarried in 1914 to Margaret (last name unsure possibly Krebs?) Fred and Margaret had 1 daughter Susanna (b. 7/5/1915). One family record states Myrtle died in 1951, but I have been unable to confirm this. Any further info would be greatly helpful. In particular, I am searching for Myrtle's death info and her parents' info.

Thank you so much

Harriet Mater mar John Russell

OK we are going to throw our lineage in here and let you all know we are still here in KS. John Marion Mater mar Mary Culver, they had among other ch, Harriet Mater b 8 Oct 1830, who mar John Russell, John and Harriet had about 8 ch (haven't worked on this line for quite a while so bear with me)
One of their younger children was also John Russell, we think his middle name was Albert. Many of the Maters, Wimmers and some Russells came to KS but most returned to IL and IN. John Albert made his way back to KS where he was born and mar in Barton Co., KS to Cynthia Ella Layton d/o David and Cassandra Hopkins Layton. John and Ella's only child, Jesse W. was born in 1887, Stafford County, KS. John Albert died ca 1887 in AR. Ella Layton remar (her parents were from Coles county, IL) and had more children with her second husband, Ben Cossman. Jesse Russell mar and had five ch who lived to adulthood---one was Jesse jr. who was my father-in-law. Stafford county is about 50 miles from us now. We have made trips to Parke county, IN before and eastern IL. We have seen Harriet Mater Russell's grave but tho John is said to have died in Bellemore, IN we have no been able to prove this. Jesse W. jr. had four sons who survived him, my husband being the youngest. There are not many of our people left in this area, but you are welcome to visit.

I have a slightly different birth date for Samuel. Sept 14, 1844. Married Feb 7,1875 and died Dec. 2, 1937. If you look back to one the earlier posts on Samuel, there are several more children listed. Do you have a death date for Anna Berdilla? I know she was still alive when my grandparents died in 1960. I would love to see a picture of her. I remember her from my childhood. She grew African Violets by the dozens. She helped her brother Harry Edward (Ed) take care of his wife, Katie. Ed and Katie were my grandparents.

I am very, very interested in your posting about "Anna Mater" marrying in 1853 in Barry County, Michigan. Since there were very few Maters in Barry County that early (and those that were there later were all related to the ones that were there earlier), I cannot help but think that you hold a missing piece in my research. I know of a widow (my great, great, great grandmother) named Anna Mater who died (with unknown last name) in Barry County in about 1855-1885. Her first husband was George Mater, her second husband George Denny and, could it be that her 3rd husband was the George you speak of? Also, I know of an Anna Mater (my ggg aunt) who also died in Barry County between 1890 and 1930 and was born between 1817 and 1833. One of this latter Anna's husbands was named Henry Shants (sp?), but, could it be that another of her husband's was named the George you speak of?
Please write me back (familytree@pohly.com) and tell me why you are researching Anna Mater of Barry County and what you know of her. Perhaps we can make some pieces fit together...
I look forward to hearing from you.

I have some limited information on an Anna Jane Mater who was born on October 2, 1855 in Canal Fulton, Ohio. She was the daughter of John Mater (1831-1912) and Barbara Schlaeppi (1832-1903). Both John and Barbara lived in Barry County Michigan and are buried there.

I don't know if this is the same Anna Mater you are trying to match, but if she married in 1876, the timing would seem about right. I have no information on her husband or children, but I do have some information on her siblings. Let me know if this would be useful.

Hi Jeannie,
It seems as if this family is much larger than I first realized. I too am descended from John Mater. I have only the smallest amount of info on his sons Henry and Samuel. I am descended from John's son, John B. John married Mary Elizabeth Baker and they had six children. Anna Elizabeth, Joseph, John Jacob, Samuel F., Daniel Harvey, and Charles Edwin. Daniel Harvey is my great-grandfather. John B. Mater and his family migrated to the Huntington Co Indiana area. I would like to learn more about the family and am happy to share what information I have on them. Thanks for responding. Kathryn

Hi Becky, I saw your post of Jan 17 and e-mailed you but didn't get a reply. Thought I'd try again. I saw the posts from Beverly Utz and I am pretty sure we're all part of the same family. In your original post you said you were looking for info on Samuel Mater. I am descended from Sam's brother, John B. Mater. He is my g-g-grandfather. I would love to share info with you and I know of one other person who is also researching this family. All I have on Sam and John's parents is the father, E. Mater, b 1809. Beverly listed his name as John, b 1808. Everything else I have seems to jibe with what you two have posted. I look forward to hearing from you.

Kathryn Anderson

My paternal grandmother is Goldie Goodhart Widder who married John C. Gray. Goldie's father was John Widder. My father, Goldie's son just discovered a family photo circa 1910 with 21 people in it including Anna Birdilla b.1879. I noticed her name was listed as one of Samuel and Lydia's children. I can give you more names if it will help you in your search.

Kathryn,

Thank you for your response. I am still trying to put the pieces together to find out the connection between Elizabeth Mater and Joseph WIdder's children and how they are connected to me. I have come to a stand still of sorts. I will keep researching to see what I can come up with. Any additional information you could provide would be helpful. Again, thank you for your time and input.
