I found the following information on the Matheny ancestors at the Robinson, Crawford Co., Ill Library. It was taken from the research of Lucille Randolph Scott, deceased, who was related to the Illinois Mathenys.
#1 Hugues, Sire de Thoire, Ruler of Bugey, France, 1080 AD
#17 Richard Metteneye, Ecuyer. married in Flanders. Married a second time 29 July 1566
at Christ Church, Newgate Street London. His second wife was Margaret Vollham, He was a refugee in London, by at least 28 May 1550.
#20 William Metteney, born 1600,son of Charles moved to Bossenden, near Dunkirk, Favershsm Road, 5 miles from Canterbury, County Kent, before 1640. His wife was Elizabeth. Thy were the parents of at least three sons, William Daniel Michael.
#21 William remained in England as we are lead to believe. Michael came to America with Daniel. In 1663 Daniel married Sarah Wentworth, daughter of gentleman Thomas Wentworth. Most researchers think they crossed the Potomac to Stafford Co. Virginia that same year, of 1663.
All American Mathenys are descended from Daniel and Sarah Wentworth Matheny. Daniel of Canterbury Parish, Kent England Came to Charles Co., MD and crossed the Potomac River to Stafford Co., VA. Died on Hope Plantation which was named for Hope Creek nearby.
