Pleasant Ridge Church & cemetery are located in Coffee county Alabama and yes, I do have photos of both headstones. They are newer headstones so the spelling and Elizabeth's maiden name may have been somehow evolved to Bloomer by mispelling, miscommunication as the yrs past because even the dates on her headstone are vague. Nathaniels dates, however, are a little more precise (at least his birth) even though the headstone is fairly new. I will try to attach the photo's here but I will be glad to email you the photos if you send your email addr. The headstones read:

JAMES NATHANIEL MATHENY
MAR 6 1797
ABT 1871

ELIZABETH BLOOMER MATHENY
1800
AFTER 1880

During the Census of 1880, at age 79, Elizabeth was listed as living with my ggrandparents, William Henry Goodson & his wife Mary (Elizabeth's daughter). So the dates on her headstone would fit.
Jean
Thanks Elaine. Your hels & info here does confirm my suspicions that Zachariah was living with his mother's uncle. Any information you uncover on which Matheny was Zachriah's father will be a huge help. I have a copy of his Obituary but his mother & father are not mentioned. Thanks again, Jean

Would you please post the information about the name of the cemetery, the location (near what city-in which county) of the graves of James and Elizabeth Matheny? I am sure that with all the descendants they have, many people would enjoy knowing about it. Thanks again.

Hello. I need help. The Matheny/Metheny line is on my husband's side. I came across a John Matheny, born in 1792 in Va. and died 1872 in West Virginia. He was married to Anna Wade. They had a son named James Matheney who was married to Sarah Queen. I found 2 Johns. One is John Wesley and the other is John M. I have his father as Archibald and mother as Jane Curry. But I am not sure if I am going in the right direction. There are so many Mathenys/Methenys out there, my tree is getting all messed up... lol... could someone please help me?

I'm sorry but I have no information on their paternal side. I know their mother was Mary Bishop b. abt. 1840 in Talbot Co. Ga. daughter of Jane H. Grant b. abt. 1813 in Ga.(probably Pulaski Co.) and William J. Bishop b. abt. 1810 in Ga. (again probably Pulaski) d. aft. 1860 bef. 1870 probably in Russell Co. Al. Jane probably died in Coffee Co. and is most likely buried near John and Polly Bishop in the same graveyard as Nathaniel and Zachariah. William J. may be the son of Elbert Bishop b. N.C. Abt. 1790 and Eleanor Stanford b. 1793 in Columbia Co. Ga. Jane's parents were probably John O. Grant and whoever his wife was. John O. lived in Talbot Co. and in Pulaski where Elbert and Eleanor were. But this is all supposition until I get back to Georgia next week to do a little more digging. Hope we make a break through some way. Elaine

Hi, your ggrandmother Elletha J. E. Matheny was my ggrandfather, Zachariah P. Matheny's sister. Nathaniel Matheny & Elizabeth are on my father's daddy's side but Zachariah (my daddy's mother's father)& your Elletha J. E. (Zachariah's sister) are from my daddy's Mother's side.
I was told by my dad & his mother (who are both now deceased) that my grandfather & grandmother were both desended from the same Matheneys & were cousins, although I don't know how close, so they are all related. However, I have never been able to find who the parents of Elletha J. E. & Zachariah are. I know they were living with their uncle (last name Bishop & brother to their mother I think). I am traveling & away from my records or could give better info, maybe. Any info anyone had on the parents of Zachariah P. Matheny & his sister, Elletha J. E. Matheny would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jean

Hi, I am traveling but have my computer with me, so I will answer the best that I can. I also have photos of the cemetery on my computer. The name of the place is Pleasant Ridge Primitive Baptist Church & Cemetery. It is a high elevation for that area & the view is beautiful. It is north of New Brockton & Elba AL & a little west of Victoria AL. You can Google it & get the directions. My ggrandfather, William Henry Goodson, owned a lot of the land & donated the land that the church & cemetery are on to the church. May I ask who you are desended from in our family? Thanks, Jean

Sometimes listed as Henry and sometimes as Henderson. He was born about 1823 in KY. I know he was married to a lady named Catherine but do not know her last name. She was born about 1830 in TN. One of their sons was Culpepper Matheny and he is my husband's grgrandfather. I was wondering if the name Henderson may have been a family name, perhaps his mother's maiden name. Culpeper's daughter, Sarah married John Jeffers. Sarah and John are my husband's grandparents and were both from IL.

I am trying to link my family member back to the Hope Plantation.

I have a Daniel Mathaney who married Frances Bean 17 May 1799 in Charles Co., Maryland, and then later married her sister, Eleanor Bean 14 Jan 1819 in Westmoreland County, VA. I've been told there is a connection to the Hope Plantation Mathenys, but I have not been able to make it. The same names of James, Daniel, William, and Thomas keep appearing in the family line.

I have not been able to document past this Daniel. I don't have any idea who his parents were, but I have the names of his children by both Frances and Eleanor. With Frances he had: Maria, George, James, Hannah and William; with Eleanor he had: Daniel, Resin, Robert, John, Abraham and Eleanor.

Any leads would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't looked at the family line for a couple of months. My direct line goes through Verlinda Jane Matheny who married Thomas R Leedom. I have heard conflicting notions of who her father was: Elias Matheny or possibly Charles Matheny. I know that they are from that area and am curious if they might be related to either Daniel or Archibald. Pretty much any information about the Matheny family that is before Verlinda Jane Matheny would be helpful.

Thank you for your offer to help out.

:)

Verlinda Jane Matheny, born 13 Oct 1817, in Manchester, Adams, OH. Married Thomas R Leedom on 3 Jun 1841. She died 1897 in OH. She is my g-g-g-grandmother.

One theory has it that her parents are Elias Matheny, born 1769 in Berkley County, VA. And Nancy Wallace, born 1795 in VA.

The second theory is that her father is Charles Matheny, born 1792, in VA and was a Preacher in Spriggs, OH.

This is a little late getting sent out, but I want to thank you greatly for the information you provided me. And I have to agree, it looks like Charles is the father. When I look through the earlier census results for Adams County, Charles has a daughter the correct age, and of course in the same place as Verlinda shows up in 1850. And they seem to be in close proximity to the Leedoms.

Thank you so much.

:)

Looking for Culpeper Matheny b. 1857 in IL. Father was Henry Matheny from KY, mother or maybe stepmother was Catherine, TN. I only find him twice in census 1870 and 1900. Might be under a middle name or Culpeper may be a middle name. He would be my husband's grgrandfather. In 1900 census he is married to an Isabella less than a year with a daughter, Sarah,13(my husband's grandmother)so I do not know Sarah's mother's name. Culpeper is an unusual name so I thought someone may know of him.

Morris Matheny, b.abt 1803 VA, wife Nancy, b.1822 PA, lived Vanderburgh Co., IN, son Moses, b.abt 1855

I have two original Matheny photos, which I would like to get back to descendants or family members. One is an original 5”x8” photograph of “Morris and Nancy Matheny – died 1867”. The other is of “Great Uncle Moses Matheny. Photos were included in a group of Bruner, Pfister, and Bauer photos. The one of Morris and Nancy looks to have been taken very, very early – possibly as early as 1865. The one of Moses is a 4”x6” picture, and he looks to be about 65/70.

I found Morris and Nancy Matheny in the 1850 and 1860 censuses for Knight (Vanderburgh Co.) IN, showing children including a child Morris and a child Moses. In 1850, father Morris was 45 (=1805), born VA, and in 1860, he was 58 (=1802). Nancy was 28 (=1822) born PA, and in 1860, she was 38. Son Morris was 3 in 1850 and 13 in 1860 and Moses was age 5 in 1860 (=1855).

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to the Matheny family.

Yes, that's what I've found in other trees, but no records to verify. Also, what is really screwy about father John(b. 1695) is his wife Sarah(also b. 1695). She apparently starting birthing children at age 45 and continued until age 83!!! That's why I'm searching for other parents of Michael Sr or a second or third wife for John. Thanks for your response!!

Looking for information on Alfred D Matheny

I have seen the name spelled various ways. Matheny - Metheney and Metheny - Alfred D Matheny was b 1bt 1810 in Tennessee (info i have) He was a Dr. I first find him on the 1840 Graves County, Kentucky Census. he was also on the 1850 in the same location. He and his wife Emily Jane Parkhill daughter of Dr. John Parkhill had several children by the 1850 census. The first child was a Sarah Elizabeth Metheny born abt 1838/39, The Next info I have on them is 1852 in Freestone County, Texas. The School census shows that Alfred D was on the list listing 2 children one a Matheny and one a Clapp. Emily Jane mother was a Clapp before she married John Parkhill. This census also shows him to be DR. I also find a marriage of Sarah Elizabeth Matheny to Ithamer S Singletary Dec. 4, 1852 they have their first child 1853 My G Grandmother Josephine Singletary. I am pretty comfortable with the idea they had 2 more children. Sarah was 12 on the 1850 census by the time she married she would have just been abt 14 years
old. The 1860 census there is a 16 year old in the house named Elizabeth. Here is the puzzle for me. Sarah Elizabeth is now gone from Ithamer and the children. by the census in 1860 he has already remarried. The thing that bothers me is This Elizabeth on the 1860 Graves KY census is out of the birth order as the census is normally listed but still has Metheny as her last name. I know its the same family since the names are the same and Alfred and Emily had 2 sons while they were in Texas. Is this girl still the same did she divorce Ithamer and abandon the children to him. They came to Texas to settle the Estate of Joel Clapp and take custody of the only Clapp child the child was orphaned for whatever the cause. I have information not confirmed that Emily Jane died in Illinois and after the 1860 census Alfred D Metheny is a ghost can't find anything on him. If anyone has information pls contact me.
Thanks
Lillie

I am looking for information on the descendants of Daniel Mathaney and his wife, Francis/es Bean. They were married 16 May St. Mary's, MD (IGI). Her parents were Caroline HEBB who married a Rasin BEAN 4 Jun 1787 in Westmoreland Co, VA. They had several children together:

George, who married Lucy A. Sutton (IGI)
Children: Francis J; William; Lucy

James, who married Elizabeth Whaler (IGI)
Children: Mary; James S; Robert

William, who married Mary Caroline Dixon (IGI)
Children: Jane Frances (IGI Chr) who married John Gourley; Eva (Stewart-Murdoch); Margaret (O'Connor); John; Gussie

Hannah, who married Isaac Newton (yeah, I know)(IGI)
Child: Mary

Maria, who married Cornelius Clarke (IGI)

After Francis/es died, he married her sister Eleanor BEAN on 14 Jan 1819 in Westmoreland Co, VA (IGI). Their children were:
Daniel, b. 16 Oct 1819, d. 8 Apr 1894 in Baltimore; married Louise Percilla/Priscilla Morris 2 Dec 1840, Baltimore (IGI). We are descended from this line:
Children: Emily (m. Hugh Roberts); Virginia (m. Isaac Dickerson); James (m. Mary E. Taylor/Tayloe); Laura Jane (m. Richard Roberts); Agnes (m. Thomas P. Johns); Louisa (m. James Brown); Jefferson Davis, b. 16 Dec 1862, d. 30 Jul 1951; William (m. Amanda Melvin); Daniel (m. Mary E Quebec); Rosetta Madeline (m. Most had maritime professions.

Hoping someone can help me out.

Jane
