Herbert Arthur Mather b 1867 was my gt grandfather & George & Lucy Mather (both b 1829) my gt gt grandparents. Herbert & Esther's daughter Gertrude (b 1891) (married to Vernon Broomhead) was my Grandmother. She had twins Betty & Joan in Nov 1918. Joan, my mother, married John Lilley and lived in Beeston until 1948 when we moved to London. I have a sister Melanie (b 1952) & two daughters, Eleanor (1976)& Genevieve (1979).
Joan is still fit and well. I remember my grandmother's brothers Cyril & Harold and their wives.

I am just starting out on this venture and have drawn a bit of a blank with the Broomhead side of the family before 1900 & would be grateful for any info. Also re Mather prior to 1829 and the children of George & Lucy.

Good to see there are some distant relatives out there.
Regards
Nick
Ford Cotton Mather(s)-Phildelphia PA

Please - has anyone ever heard of this man? He supposedly was from Philadelphia and married to Catherine Sweigert of Lancaster Co, PA. He would have been born in early 1800's, probably c. 1810-1830. Sons were William Kahl Mathers b. 1848 and Henry Mathers b. 1846. Ford and Catherine would have been married in Philadelphia. I have searched census, death records, marriage records, obits, family trees, etc. Everything I can think of. There is no record of his existence. Catherine was then living as a nurse with the Kahl family in Lancaster in the 1860's. These were my gg grandparents. My grandfather swears they were divorced. Ford was supposedly a printer/goldleafer for a magazine named the "Blue Hen" in Philadelphia. Please help - this is making me crazy!

Hi, sorry I took so long getting back to you. Also sorry, but I have not found mention of your family. Stanley Street is mentioned all through both books, as the Stanley's played a large part throughout the history of New Britain. I do have a couple of pages of information about the founding of the Stanley company, but didn't think that was what you were looking for. Did the McKirdy's marry into any local families? perhaps thee may be some hints that way? If you think I can be of more help, feel free to re-post, nina

Kyloe,Berwick,Murton,Goswick,HolyIsland, Northumberland MATHERS

I am researching these families in the Northumberland area. On various records they mention Alnwick, Norham, Murton, Goswick, Kyloe, Berwick Upon Tweed. Upon initial searching it seems that these places are close to one another. Please correct me if I am wrong. I have the following information from generous volunteers and records that I have found myself.

These I am sure are connected:

Marriage:
Andrew MATHER to
Martha RICARBY
21 May 1809
Norham, Northumberland
IGI Batch#M000761

Births:
Golden Square Presbyterian, Berwick:
March 10, 1812, Robert son of Andrew MATHER a husbandman at Murton and Martha his wife. Born at Murton aforesaid.

April 8, 1814, John son of Andrew MATHER and Margaret his wife of Goswick, Holy Island Parish, born March 27.

March 7, 1816, Elizabeth daughter of Andrew MATHER a servant with Mr. Weir at Goswick and Margaret his wife. Born February 19.

They had at least two other children who were born in Aberdeen, Scotland:

James MATHER born about 1820
George MATHER born 1822
Isabella MATHER born 1824

They are all listed in the 1841 census for Woodside Parish, Aberdeen:
Address: Lower Middlefield
Andrew MATHER 60 Farmer b.England
Martha " 60 b.England
Andrew(jr) " 30 Ag. Lab.(he is Robert,never marries)
Elizabeth " 25 Servant(she marries Alex.MIDDLETON)
Margaret " 20 Servant(think she is James wife)
James " 20 Millwright App. b.Aberdeenshire
George W. " 15 Ag. Lab. b.Aberdeenshire(moves to US)
Isobel " 15 Servant(unknown what happens to her)

The son John b.1814 is out of the home and marries in 1842 to Anne CONNON. They move back to Northumberland by 1846 and sail to U.S. in 1854.

I think that the father, Andrew MATHER may be one born 4 April, 1779, to Andrew and Margaret MATHER of Fenham East Steads, Baptised at Holy Island. They also had the following children:
Mary MATHER baptised:1777 Holy Island
Eleanor MATHER baptised:1781 Holy Island
Elizabeth MATHER baptised:1784 Holy Island
John MATHER baptised: 1787 Holy Island

I found the death of a Margaret MATHER which may be Andrew's wife:
Parish Records:Burial
Margaret MATHER
Abode: Mounthooly Kyloe
Died: 16 Dec, 1800
Age: 46
Husband: Andrew(laborer)
Place: Belford, St.Mary
Northumberland, England

I found a marriage record on the IGI which may be this couple:
Andrew MATHER to
Margaret RIDPATH
13 June, 1776 Holy Island, Northumberland
Batch#M002561

Any help or input appreciated.
Thanks,
Margaret
Re: Horace J Mather Bolton / Dagenham

Horace J Mather married Nora Gayther in Oct-Dec 1933. The register no is Bolton 8c367 Jan-Mar 1933
There was a Horace Mather born in Bolton in 1908. The register no is Bolton 8c 367 Jan-Mar 1908.
If you apply to the General Register Office you can purchase copies of these certs. The marriage cert will give Horace's father and the birth cert will give both parents. If this is the correct Horace, you can look in the index files to find his parents marriage cert which will give his father's name and so on - you should be able to get back to 1837.
Also from 1901 back to 1841 you can check the census records which gives a lot on info on families, addresses and occupations.
Rodney Price

We are Darren and Sheila Mather currently in North Wales. Nearly our entire family of Mather's is from Bolton, Lancashire area and still have some relatives there. We so far go back to James Mather (1822) who married Susan Whaley?. They had 8 kids (1844-1861): Hannah, Ellen, James, Giles, Alice, Rachel, Richard & Nathaniel.

Does anyone have any information on these especially the 2 James Mather's as they are our ancestors.

Thanks

Hi there

My name is Kurt Mather, I am a direct descendant from the Bolton Mathers married into the gayther family, My fathers name was Ernest (B1936 D2008) and his father was Horace J Mather (B circa 1915 - 1920), we think Horaces Father was John Mather who would probably have been born between 1890 - 1900 ish

Unfortunately although I can trace gayther back to 1430, I cannot get any information on Horace or beyond

Kurt

According to Horace Mather in his 1890 genealogy "Lineage of Rev. Richard Mather", Stephen was born in Ontario to Varnum Mather (b. 7 Mar 1771 Cheshire Co., New Hampshire) and Abigail Washington. Stephen is a direct descendant of Rev. Richard Mather who came to America from England in 1636. Somehow, when the Stephen Mather family moved to Canada the name got changed to Mathers.

So I visited my Great Uncle Edward Cretney this summer and also my aunt Patricia Banton. Aunt Pat seems to think that the large family bible was donated/loaned to the Fort Steele Provincial Museum and was put on display in the church until it was stolen. She did have a few family bibles of her own which had some addresses of the Cretney line back in Isle of Man. I copied most of the info in them.

There seems to be a common thread running through these reports.

I have Mathers in Bolton in my Carman family tree and there is another tree on this site with Mathers related to my family. Check out my tree to see if you can find a link.

I certainly will when I get a moment and get back to the board.

Let's try to solve this one!
Jackie

Stephen Mather son of Varnum and Abilgail Mather.
Born 1794 in Ontario.
Died 1840 in Ontario.
I just came across some family papers written in Sept. 1986 from Lenora Schoenroth who sent info to my grandmother.
It states that there was a family story that Stephen Mather was probably murdered. Apparently he rode into Lambeth on horseback, leading another horse which he planned to sell to some Americans. His body was found later in a creek with no sign of the two horses.
Does anyone know anything??????

I spoke to my mother last night and she said that Jim's mother's name was Nancy Tillery, not Peal. Hence, the "T" in Nan-T (his sister's name).

Hope this information is useful.

Hi-

My name is Joseph Remmell. Jim (the III) was my step father since the time I was practically born. Jim passed away of lung cancer on March 11, 2008 in St. Petersburg, Florida. He had lived in the Tampa and St. Pete area for the past 10 years after moving back to Florida from California where we had moved frok Baltimore in early 1980. Though he and my mother divorced in the mid 1980's, they remained close and it was me and my mom (Dolly)who were with him in his final days. His sister, Nancy who he called Nan-T also died of cancer some years ago. I remember her husband's name was George. Not sure when but probably more than 10 years ago. His fatehr James Francis Mather II did live in Glen Burnie, MD. and you are correct, he died in the mid 1970's. I remember his legs were amputated. His mother was Nancy Peal (we called her Grandmom Mather... what a card she was). For a while in the mid to late 1970's she lived in the Woodlawn area of Balto. county near Windsor Mill Road. I believe she finally passed sometime in the late 1980's or maybe the very early 1990's. Not sure of the exact date.

Certainly Jim was not perfect but then again, who is? For me, though not my biological father, he was every bit my dad and he treated all of his step children as his own. There was never any use of the words, step dad or step child. It was simply dad or son.

Dad was cremated per his wishes and has gone "eternally fishing" having been scattered into the Tampa bay as he had asked.

I hope this helps.

I have a copy of the census entry you are referring to for the household of Peter and Sarah Mather.
I don't think Peter Mather was christened in 1775 as he is listed as 52 years old in 1851 (He is listed as 40 years old in the 1840 census).
James Mather's daughter, Sarah emigrated to Australia with her family in 1882 after he father's death in 1881.
Megan

Re: Stephen Mather-Son of Varnum Mather

Hi Lindsey,
I came across this information on the web.
London Council Minutes 2007 (London Ontario)
Reasons for Designation
Mathers Cemetery. 3557 Colonel Talbot Road
Mathers Cemetery is recommended for Designation under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act, as a site of heritage value. The cemetery contains graves of thee members of the Mathers family who were early pioneers of Westminster Township.
Historical Reasons
The Mathers Cemetery is located at Lot 74 West Talbot Road (WTR), the northeast comer of the former Mathers Farm which is now called North Lambeth Subdivision. The cemetery plot size is 20 feet by 20 feet with one large pink granite monument set on a concrete base in the centre.
Stephen Mathers was born in England. In 1815 he petitioned Colonel Talbot for 200 acres at Lot 74 WTR. He was granted the property in 1836. Stephen married Elizabeth ‘Betsy’ Patrick and they had nine children. The Patrick family was oue of the first settlers in the area. A one storey log home was built at the rear of the farm properly on the east bank of Mill Creek, now known as Dingman Creek. In 1840 Stephen was murdered near the St. Clair River while delivering a horse that he had sold. The family located Stephen’s body but found that the money had been stolen.James Mathers, oldest son of Stephen, married Mercy McNaims and they had ten children. The homestead was sold to James and Mercy in 1843. James served as school trustee of SS #17 Westminster Township for several years. He was Deputy Reeve for the Township for 1875-76.
James Mathers laid out plans for a cemetery for the Mathers family in the northeast comer of the farm. The first burial was his son John, who had never married: born 1853 - died 1889. James’s wife, Mercy is buried there also: born 1820 - died 1892. In October 1892, James married Mary Ristotle, daughter of Samuel and Margret Ristotle. Andrew, the youngest son of James and Mercy, and his wife Elizabeth continued to farm the lot until James’s death in 1901. James is buried in the cemetery: born 1829 - died 1901. Mary sold the farm a short time after James’s death to Thomas Vanstone and George Bogue.
Andrew and Elizabeth, who had farmed with James, moved to Lot 31 Concession 1 Westminster Township.
Architectural Reasons
The single monument in the cemetery is a pink granite square column. The cap has gothic gables set in each face. The main body of the spire has names in reverse etching on the east face. The other three faces are blank, The pink granite continues into a base block for the spire. The spire is set on a two-level concrete base. The upper level is cast with the Mathers name in relief and the lower level is cast in a rusticated pattern. There are also two granite foot stones separate to the east of the column, one is etched ‘FATHER’, the other ’MOTHER’. Posts and chains delineate the south and west sides of the plot and the two southerly comers are also marked with white granite posts set slightly above ground level, both engraved ‘M.

Update "Field of Stones" website
Mathers Cemetery

Mathers Cemetery, north of Lambeth in former Westminster Township, Middlesex County. A one-grave cemetery now being surrounded by housing developments, having been annexed to the City of London. Inscription on one side only.
"In memory of James MATHERS died Oct. 9, 1901 aged 79 yrs.
His wife Mercy, died Apr. 15, 1892 aged 72 yrs.
Their son John W. died Jan. 30, 1889 aged 36 yrs."

I am helping a friend whose maiden name is Mathers. She doesn't have a computer. Her family is descended from Stephen through his son Daniel through his son Albert George and her grandfather Almond and his son "Dick" Theodore. I was wondering if I had the right names of Stephen and Betsy's children and where I might find who Stephen's father is. I noticed some of his children said their father was English but some said he was American. I would appreciate any information or corrections.
Thanks for your help.
Janis

Descendants of Stephen Mathers

Generation No. 1

1.
My gggg-grandfather William mather b: 1808 and his brother John b: 1817 are from the same place and William named one of his sons Nathaniel. I wonder if your Nathaniel could be their brother. Was Nathaniel's father named Richard?
Thanks, Elaine.

All three moved to America in the early 1840's and settled in Maryland along with Wm and John' father Richard mather b: 1775?, Richard had 8 children, only 2 that I am aware moved to America although a 1st cousin of the brothers also named John Mather moved to Boston, Mass USA. WM and John opened the Inn at Cross keys in the Village of Cross Keys in Baltimore County, Maryland. Do you know of a link between Horace' parents or grandparents and mine?
Thanks, Elaine.

I am a relative of Sean Mather. We are from the Mather family ( William and Mary " Ellen" nee Cunliff Mather who were the original owners of the Cross Keys Inn in baltimore, maryland. William and John's father was Richard mather. Only 2 of Richard's 8 children came to America. John was running an Inn in England before coming over to America after William died for his funeral and actually married Williams widow, mary Ellen. Is your family the same. Do you know of any England relatives? I do know that a cousin of WIlliam mather, a John mather moved to Massachussett's ( did I spell that right?!) I have lots of info on all the mather's in baltimore. Hope to hear back from you.
Thanks,
Elaine.

Hi,
My Mather's are reported to have lived in Lancashire and family rumor has it that originally they were from Cheshire.
William Mather migrated to America in 1841 and shortly after sent for his wife, child and brother John. They opened a very popular Inn in 1848. Who I believe to be his father, Richard Mather also lived with him in 1850 in America, and I found a obituary that he died I think the next year. William married Ellen Cunliff (or Cunlive, Cunliffe) and I found a possible marriage record with their names married in Bolten Le Moor, Lancashire. Their infant daughter that came over with Ellen was Hannah but she died just after leaving the ship. Any of the names or locations sound familiar to your family? William and John Mather had 6 other siblings that stayed in England. I am still searching for their names and to find Richard's wife and parents info along with Ellen's parents and siblings. I do know Ellen had a sister and that her mother died and her dad remarried.
Elaine.
