Matlock's from Franklin Co., TN, Madison & Desoto Co., MS
I am particularly interested in information on William and James Matlock that moved from Franklin Co., TN around 1831 to Madison Co., MS and also has ties to Desoto Co., MS. John D., James, William, James M., Sarah and my gggrandfather Charles Henry Matlock all arrived in Madison Co., MS about 1831.
Apparently these Matlock boys went on a spending spree buying up Madison Co. land between 1832-1834. I count around 1,500 + acres. Charles Henry had many acres before the civil war, having R/E of $10,240 and personal property of $21,015 on the 1860 census.
From what I gather William died in Madison Co., MS about 12/1832 and his brother James died about 1836, but I don't know if he died in Madison Co. or Desoto Co., MS. William was married to Mary E. Matlock that shows up in later census' in Desoto Co., MS.
Deeds prove that John H. that is buried next to Mary at Edmonston Cemetery in South Haven, MS is her son, so the John D. Matlock that married Caroline McGinty in Madison Co., MS on 09 Oct 1834 must have been James' son. John must have died before 1839, because Mrs. Caroline Matlock married David Briscoe in Madison Co., MS 08 Jun 1839. I have a deed from Madison Co., MS dated 11/14/1834 where John D. Matlock sold land for $2,220 located in the county of Reatherford (maybe Rutherford), Tennessee to Thomas S. Anthony. That makes me think the Matlock's have Rutherford Co., TN ties. John D. would have been 21 at the time of this transaction.
Sarah Matlock married James Mercer Wadlington 07 Dec 1831 in Madison Co., MS, but must have died around 1835.
Some researchers believe that CSA Col Charles H. Matlock b 1831 from Arkansas that died in 1863 in a prison camp was the son of William and Mary (szmatlock webpate author John An Moore Passmore) and some believe he was the son of William's brother James.
I'm trying to find the link between my Charles H and the other Matlock's that were in Madison Co., MS at the same time. I know they have to be related. However, the other Col Charles H. seems to always to be the connected Charles.
I have heard of a letter that Mary E. Matlock wrote to a Judge Callaghan about her husband William's estate after his death in 1832. Mary E. may have married William's brother James after he died. When James died in 1836 Mary asked her nephew James M. (also her stepson) to be administrator of James' estate.
Any information on this line or the two Charles' would greatly be appreciated.
