According to information I have been able to find William Matney and Phoebe Sluder was my great grandparents. My grandfather was John H. Matney and from what I have been able to recall from my father when we went to the Maple City KS cemetery CB Matney was a brother to John H. I found a marriage license for C B and it lists his parents as William and Phoebe Sluder. I also, recall that my father did say his grandfather's name was William.

Please let me hear from you.

Funeral services for David B. Matney, 84 years old, who died Wednesday at his home on a farm near argentine, are to be held Friday afternoon at the home. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery .

In the death of Mr. Matney, Wyandotte County parts with a characteristic pioneer. On the farm where he died Mr. Matney, in the days before the Civil War, had several thrilling encounters with border outlaws. He came to Westport landing when he was 8 years old. Besides his widow he is survived by four sons who live on farms near the homestead.

SECOND OBITUARY

Kansas Side Pioneer Dead
David B. Matney Had Part in Early Wyandotte History

David B. Matney, who came to Westport landing with his parents in 1844, died yesterday on the farm near Argentine where he has lived since before the Civil War, when he several times narrowly escaped death at the hands of “border ruffians.” He was 84 years old the day before his death.

Mr. Matney was 8 years old when his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Matney, came from Virginia to Westport. A few months after their arrival, the family moved to a farm on the southern limits of Wyandotte County and has lived there since, except for a short time when during the Civil War he was forced to seek shelter in Missouri.

He was married in 1860 to Miss Emily Puckett, who survives him. She was a daughter of John Puckett, an early settler of Westport. Mr. Matney was one of the oldest Masons in Kansas, having received his degreees in the lodge at Shawnee fifty-two years ago. Besides his widow he is survived by four sons, John Matney and Joseph Matney, who live on farms near the homestead; George Matney, 1222 South Fortieth Street, Kansas Side, and Elisha Matney, 1232(?) Waverly avenue, Kansas Side. He is also survived by twenty-one grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2 o’clock Friday afternoon at the home.

Sandy, I believe my Matthew Matney (Jr) b.ca. 1873 KS was the son of Matthew Matney Sr and Mary Jane Burton. I also noticed in one of those census I looked up he had a brother living in same county--a John? I can't remember for sure--but close to him in age.

Laura HEATH (1877 CA-1959) m.1.ca. 1903 Matthew MATNEY b.ca. 1873 KS to parents from IL and MO. In the 1910 census Matthew is working as a teamster at a mill in Rowland Twp, Covina, Los Angeles Co CA. and they have two children. Matthew Matney died by the Jan 9 1920 census as Laura Matney is living as a widow in Covina at age 42 working as a packer in an orange-packing house and her two children are with her. I believe Matthew Matney was Matthew Matney Jr the son of Matthew Matney Sr born ca 1844 IL and his wife Mary Jane Burton b. 4 Nov 1846 KY.. Matthew Matney Sr is buried in Oakdale Cemetery, Glendora, CA. ,m.2. Norman WRIGHT
By 1st marriage:
Frances Aileen MATNEY b.ca. 1905 CA. Living with her widowed mother in 1920 Covina, Los Angeles Co CA
Glen C. MATNEY b.ca. 1908 CA. Living with his widowed mother in 1920 Covina, Los Angeles Co. CA.

Samantha,

I am a HEATH family researcher and have worked the 9 lines out of the 9 children of Israel Heath and Elizabeth Blue. Your Laura Heath who married Matthew Mattney is out of the 'James Heath line' the firstborn child of Israel Heath. I can send you his whole section if you want it. Send me your email if you do. Do you have any old photos that would include Matthew and Laura? I'm not researching the Matney line as that is a 'by marriage' for me. But I do have Laura's background back to 1773.

I bought a photo identified as Mamie Matney. I believe this may be Mamie Lewis b. 1897 who married Lige Cecil Matney Sr. b. 1896 in Scott County, MO on 15 Oct 1919.

A Mamie Matney consented the marriage of her son Lige Cecil Matney Jr., age 19, of Commerce, MO to Hazel Geneva Humphreys, age 15, of Charleston, Mississippi County, MO on 17 Jan 1941.

A 1935 death certificate for a child born to Mamie Lewis and Lige C. Matney says that the deformed baby was buried in Charleston, MO. It also says that Mamie Lewis Matney was born in Mankato, MN and Lige Matney was born in Marley, MO.

The Sikeston Herald noted on 27 April 1949 that Lige C. Matney of Scott County, MO was enrolled in the CCC, Civilian Conservation Corps.

Please contact me if you have an interest in this photo.

Kathy@FamilyWeSearch.com

Hi,
My name is Cathy Baker, I use to live in Wayne County Michigan and have many family members still living there who are related to Matneys. My grandfather was a Matney named Anthony Walter. They all come from the Matneys who live in the West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky area. I was always told by aunts and uncles that we were native american, that our ancester Ken Toler or toles, was native american from the chiriquahau apache tribe, or cherokee indian tribe.. but again I have no proof of this other than the dawes native american rolls of Martha Matney.

Alex had two sons that I know of. One was Henry Sr., and the other was John. Henry Sr.'s son Rake Henry is my step-grandfather.

There are two sets of Matney's which are distantly related into the Virginia Matneys residing in Pike Co., Ky. There is also two different Alex Matneys.

My grandfather was Willie Cambell Matney, and was the son of Alexander Pate Matney. Alexander or Alex P. was the son of Daniel Matney and Polly Fuller. The census gives Polly's name as Marry, which was probably her first or middle name.

Alex P. Matney had a brother who moved to Paintsville, Ky. named James Harvey Matney, or listed as James H. Matney in the census.

If I am correct, the Alexander you're thinking of was Daniel's brother, and their father was Walter Matney Jr. I think Daniel also had a brother named Walter who was some younger than he.

This Alexander moved to Kentucky and married Jane Hamilton. They then hand John and Henry Sr. You can see their heirs in the Pike County census for District 4 around 1920. They lived on Little Beaver Creek, near Elkhorn City, Ky.

My great grandfather Alex Pate Matney lived at Mouthcard, Ky. All this means is that there is a mountain seperating the two families. They each lived on one of the the two forks of the Big Sandy river, the Levisa and the Russell. My great grandfather on the Levisa at Mouthcard.

Sincerely,

Willie Sean matney
Proctorville, Ohio

POW/MIA, Korean War, MATNEY

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Webster County, Missouri as his home of record. His remains were never recovered.

Soldier: DONALD EUGENE MATNEY
Born: April 11, 1932, Caucasian
Date of loss: August 20, 1950, MIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. The Matney family is one of those missing.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
