There were many Matsons from Loch Swilly. I do not know any of the lines except my line. I know for a fact that my line was not in Canada. If you have information that connects these two lines I would very much like to know the link. My Uriah had brothers but, no one seems to have any information on who they were. Thank you.

I am currently looking at a Matson family in Palgrave, Peel, ON, Canada. It says Hugh Matson married to Mary Harkness/Harkniss/Hartwell, came from Donegal. Hugh would have been born abt 1799 in Donegal and came to Canada after the youngest son, Robert Henry was born in Ireland in 1842. Children in order of birth: John, Isacc, Eliza, David and Robert Henry, were all born in Ireland.

Ellen

Roberta,

I'm actually researching both as they are both parts of my ancestry, and the Pierson side is proving to be the most difficult. The only information I have has been given to me by my uncle. I've been thinking of putting another message on the Pierson family forum to get additional information on them, because I have no information other than the names of Joseph W Pierson's parents.

I'm looking for ancestors. The two individuals I have are:
Ada June Matson
b.31 Jul 1868 Ohio?
d.30 Dec 1941 Ohio?
She married Joseph W Pierson

Her mother was:
Angeline Matson
b.1846 Ohio?
She was supposedly divorced. Her other children are:
Reuben Matson
Franklin Matson
Leslie Matson
Ella Matson

I couldn't find anything about these folks online anywhere, so if anyone has any additional information for me I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

Shawn Pierson

They concluded that there was no relationship. My views are and they are 99% that we were originally from Hull, England.
Regards
Ken

I am a descendant of Captain John Matson from North Bend Ohio. I have a local history book. In it it tells how young William Fuller age sixteen along with his father was captured by Indians at the mouth of the great Miami while building a fish dam. They were working with Captain John at the time. There is nothing else stated about anyone else being there. This happened in August of 1791.

Re: Peter Waldermar Matson - Swedish?

It's definitely scandinavian or germanic. It really depends upon when this individual lived. There was a King Waldemar of Denmark, and the name "Waldemar" translates to "sea of trees" in German or it can also mean something that's been obscured by trees. The Matson name is one of those names which is found in Denmark, Scotland, Sweden, and Norway. Since the borders of these scandinavian countries changed so drastically it's my guess that this Peter may have come from the Schleswig-Holstein are of what is today Gemany. The area has gone back and forth between Denmark and Germany for a 1000 years and the names get muddled. It's also curious that Peter had a middle name. That is not a scandinavian tradition that I know of, and again points to Peter being a Schleswiger or a Holsteiner. Hope that helps?!

I found William Matson in Who's Who on the Pacific Coast, A biographical complilation of notable living comtemporaries west of the Rocky Mountains, Harper Publishing Company 1913. It does not give a middle name. It states: William Matson, Capitalist. Born Sweden October 18, 1840. Edu. public schools, Sweden. Came to American 1863. Was Capt. on San Francisco Bay on schooner "William Frederick"; built "Emma Claudian" to run to Sandwich Islands, 1882, which was the beginning of Matson nav. Co. (now pres). One of the builders of pipe line from Gaviota to Santa Maria oil fields. Coalinga to Monterey; sold interests to Associated Oil Co., after operating 5 years. Organized Honolulu Oil Co.; Dri., Merchants Exchange; Pres., Honolulu Consolicated Oil Co.,Commercial Petroleum co., Atlas Wonder Mining Co., Dir. Natl Ice Co. Honolulu Plantation Co., Paauhau Sugar Plantation o. Consul of Sweden. Clubs: Pacific Union, Behemian Commonwealth. The same basic information is in Who was Who in America, A Companion Volume to Who's Who in America Vol. 1, 1897-1942. His death date is given as 11 Oct 1917.I understand from a Swedish researcher that his given name there was Wilhelm Matsson and he was born in Lysekil in 1849. It has always been family history that he was related to my grandmother's family, but I have not yet connected them. If you need more info, please write akwildfire@aol.com.

I replying to your very old post about the ancestry of Captain Thomas Matson (my great great grandfather. Did you know that the Matson shipping line from the 19th Century was started by William Matson who was born in Sweden. Do you think there could be a link between this Matson and Captain Thomas Matson- or is it just a coincidence that both Matson families were in the shipping industry? Just a thought though no proof found yet to establish the link.

My Captain Thomas Matson came from Nova Scotia in 1851 with a shipload of scottish settlers, led by a Rev. Norman Macleod. He settled in South Australia.

Captain Thomas was married in Halifax NS in 1841. Trying to find out where he came from before this. He was born in approx 1819.
